Uefa Nations League: Portugal vs Switzerland

Post by FactualFrank » Wed Jun 05, 2019 5:26 pm

Some footy on again! 7.45pm KO.

I thought I'd create the thread, partly for those who will be watching, and partly for those who fancy a whinge saying it's a pointless game yet will still come onto a thread about a game they won't be watching :D

Was in Porto yesterday. Had tickets for both England games. But can’t really be arsed going. Porto was full of the stereotype England fan. And the main reason I can’t be arsed with them these days.

The team and manager look as promising as ever. And hope they win the competition. Would be great for the mentality going into the next tournaments.

We owe them for kicking Rooney out of Euro’04. We’d have won that if he’d stayed fit.

Feel sorry for the people of Porto having to put up with some of the cocks who follow England for nearly a full week. In a regular tournament it's generally 2 or 3 days in one city before moving on.

Bookies have it as Portugal, England, Netherlands Switzerland in order of fave.
So going off odds, England vs Portugal final, with Portugal to win.

Netherlands however have arguably the best central defence in the world, so it won't be easy for us tomorrow evening.

The Netherlands have rediscovered their mojo, winning in Germany a prime example, and they'll have a point to prove after missing the last WC,this England team are now considered a scalp after our recent success,

It definitely isn't a pointless tournament either, obviously qualification for the Euro's is likely for most of the bigger names through the regular format, but there is significant financial benefits to winning the NL,and despite England's rapid rise up the rankings many of this squad still lack game management experience,as shown by the Croatia defeat in the WC Semi-final,anything that helps aid this young squad and manager can only be an asset.

They drew in Germany, but should have won.

I agree with you about it not being a pointless tournament. I've enjoyed it as well. Much better than friendlies.

Just checked your right, they hammered the Germans 3-0 in Holland though.

Van Dijk bagged in both those games, clearly he is a threat going forwards as well,is there anything he can't do.

Ronaldo FK, 1-0.
Notice EUFA haven’t fetched the new rules in and Portugal put two men on the end of the line. The ball went very close to the Swiss man and he didn’t jump.

Videos of loads of young lads wearing man bags and throwing bottles and funnily enough running away when the police wade in.

I’m baffled by that. Don’t see the pen for Switzerland at all, he tripped himself.

So on the penalty we have a variety of opinions so it wasn’t clear and obvious was it?

It’s not clear and the ref took ages to look at it

I just can't see a pen there.

Why isn't there an independant adjudicator, it's hardly likely the ref will ever overturn his own decision.

Anything but clear and obvious. Even the ref watched it countless times before giving it.

I was speaking hypothetically tbh, not about this particular incident.

More like the ref gives a pen, but overturns it himself after checking VAR. That would be some comedown, some refs probably would never do it.

we've seen that happen loads already this season in Europe. I actually think it takes a lot of pressure off the refs, now they can make a decision and change their mind

And completely kills any goal celebration - see Man City v Spurs in CL.

I suspect many Man city fans won't bother celebrating in future after the Sterling disallowed goal.

I only saw him towards the end of his career but been told many times how often Jimmy Mac would have a quiet game and then win it for us with a piece of genius.

That's just it. It'll be a half-hearted celebration. Bit like a conversion celebration in rugby.

I don't think it will, 90% of goals scored (random percentage I just made up) are clean and would not be ruled out. It might make people actually learn the rules and pay attention to what's going on too which would be helpful

edit: that said, ask me again in a few months
