Yes, this is probably going to be a long post, yes it will probably border on a rant, but Erik Pieters FFS.

Are we under some quirky transfer directive that is forcing us to buy at least one player from Stoke every window?

Did we really need to increase investment in our recruitment if we are primarily scouting one team?

Patience is asked for, patience is given, and our new first team left back could be Erik Pieters?

A 30 year old, who will be 31 in a couple of weeks, who couldn't force his way back into the Stoke squad. A situation that wasn't helped by his social media communications. Rowett and Jones both decided that they would rather play Martins Indi at left back and away from his best position instead of Pieters.

His last International appearance was in 2014 as a substitute and his only real run of games was way back in 2011. So the Netherlands' International tag is a massive stretch. The only reason that he got any game time at Amiens is because they didn't have another specialist left back to challenge him.

Fair enough, he played 21 games for Stoke early in the season, when they were leaking goals.

They conceded 20 goals during their first 15 games, with him on the pitch, and ( drum roll ) about 15 of those goals came from play down his flank. It didn't get any better when he was brought back into the squad. In fact the other Championship teams seemed to be exploiting him as a weakness and shuffling him off to SC Amiens improved the defensive performance of Stoke. Which is a poor reflection, because his replacements aren't suited to the position.

And we think he is capable of protecting our left flank in the Premiership if anything should happen to Taylor?

And we think that he is capable of replicating Taylors link up play with Mc Neill by getting forward?

Not a chance, he will sit on the bench and pick up a big wage, deny us the opportunity of bringing in a long term player, pick up a few yellow cards and stunt our limited creativity if he plays.

Prior to the window we had some media gems that included these statements.

“As we hopefully continue to maintain our Premier League status going forward, the above will form a key part of our strategy and, in the main, we will purchase players who improve the quality and competitiveness of our first team and are able to technically develop further and grow in value."

Mike Garlick

"Burnley are in the process of appointing technical analysts and their stats system puts value, and perhaps most importantly potential, on prospective players."

“The two interesting ones are how he is performing and what his potential is,” explains Rigg.

“What we want to try and do is not buy a player for what he’s done, but for what they’ve got the potential to do. Looking at Barcelona, Lionel Messi is playing at his peak, whereas Dembele has got more to come."

Mike Rigg

So what seems to be happening on that front exactly?

Well, with the few players the rumour mill has linked us to ( which could be nonsense ) it all seems to be a bit like Riggs spell at QPR.

https://www.dailymotion.com/embed/video ... autoplay=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Potential for sour grapes and bias, but just as interesting as the blog link I posted in the Eleven new scholars sign in for the new season thread.

* LTL sprays himself with a little Obsession by Calvin Klein *, because if the QPR and Fulham fans had been more dubious and critical instead of throwing their arms wide to welcome their new Messiah they might have escaped or limited a lot of the damage their clubs sustained. Key appointments should always be subject to ongoing scrutiny until they have proven their worth and loyalty, especially when they have poor performance records.

The Lancashire Telegraph article from March 25th also stated that

"Rigg has implemented a new statistics-based model at Turf Moor since arriving in November, in tandem with a data professor he has worked with closely elsewhere over the past four years."

"Rigg believes the system, which will analyse players in 22 leagues across the world, provides Burnley with something ‘better than anything else out there.’ "

If all of that is true then we really must be prioritising other areas, because bringing in Pieters would be a scraping the barrel type of signing that doesn't correspond with what our new system allegedly gives us in terms of performance and what our new recruitment strategy is aiming to accomplish.

I wonder who our priorities could be?

They can't include Fikayo Tomori from Chelsea, because selling Tarks and bringing him in as a direct replacement would move us one step closer to relegation. Ticks the box for being young with some potential, but we can't make a drastic change to our defensive set up ( like we did last year), he isn't as good and more importantly you can't easily replace the developed understanding Mee and Tarks have built up or expect a new arrival to master our framework in a couple of weeks.

£40m isn't enough for Tarks in this window of mad prices for central defenders either. £50m release clause as a minimum, if that is what it is, or jog on.

If Tarks isn't set to leave ( hopefully he doesn't want to ), then we really don't need another central defender and we should be spending the money elsewhere. £10-£20m sat on the bench behind four other players will do us no good this season at all.

Hasn't been confirmed yet, but Pieters would be a poor and somewhat desperate signing. The type of last ditch solution that is called upon to fill a position when everything else goes tits up.

What happened to Rigg putting together a target list of 440 players for us, comprised of 10 players for each position across 4 key groups within the clubs playing staff?

20 players in the Peak and Twilight groups and we might be in for Erik Pieters?

How did Pieters even make it into the 20 when the benchmarks are "how is he performing and what is his potential", at a competent level for the Championship ( in a flat back 4 with no forward impetus) and no remaining potential ( likely to decline further ) doesn't tick either of those boxes.

How many more, only for the short term, cast offs from a struggling Stoke do we really need?

If this is the "next level" recruitment that we were promised we are probably wasting our money. It will take a couple of jaw dropping miracle signings in the next few weeks to justify that claim if we bring in Pieters. I'm not saying that won't happen, I'm hoping it will, but this rumoured link doesn't inspire me with a lot of confidence.

Pieters isn't a completely busted flush and he could certainly do a job for someone, but is he really the best we could do for a new left back after 8 months of preparation for this window?

Seems to make sense to me. Good back up to push Taylor and can step in if needed. Now let’s get that quality midfield player we need.

Would be very happy with Rodriguez.

That release clause looks to change week on week doesn’t it.

I'm (fairly) excited. The squad is improving with both Jay and Pieters. Both will make a good contribution I'm sure.

A blend of youth and experience is vital for us to thrive in this division, and I don't think we're doing badly at all.

And 30 year old players are fitter and quicker than 27 year olds were back in the 90s.

ClaretTony wrote:Imagine we bring Koiki into the squad and Taylor gets a bad injury in the first game. We could have seriously exposed ourselves then in that position. How many times have you seen Koiki play for you to suggest he’s good enough to step into a Premier League squad.

Keeping players into their 20s is something we are able to do now. It gives them more chance to develop and gives us more chance to see whether they will be good enough for us. It’s the right way to do things.

Koiki is 19 and Stone has already said we will be looking to get him out on loan.

You don’t think Pieters is going to be a good signing, I get that, but we need a left back good enough to be able to play in the Premier League. I think he’s going to be a good signing and I don’t share your view that Koiki is ready to fulfil that role, certainly not yet.
I've never seen Koiki play, just heard the good reports about him, I agree we need a replacement for Ward as well. As I've also said I've nothing against Pieters, as a player or a person, BUT despite having 4 midfielders for 2 centre mid spots, if we go into the new season with those same 4, and Defour breaks down, I fear for us. The way I look at it a team is as strong as its weakest link, and that centre mid role is our weak spot. Teams, especially the top teams walk through us too easy, not because we lack effort, but because we are lightweight. Teams that press us in that area, reap the rewards of soft tackling and rabbit in the headlight passing. IF the only player we buy this window is a strong centre midfielder, then I think we'll be fine for the coming season. I would hate to miss out on THAT player because we are 5 million short on the asking price, after we spent money on a back up left back.
I'm not after an argument, I do agree with all of your reasoning, as I said its about prioritising.

From what I read ages ago it is £10 million - £5 million immediately and £5 million next year. Was in a newspaper article though, nothing definite but it is something West Brom seem to do.

I'm not sure what midfield has to do with this but if you haven't seen Koiki play then I'm baffled at your suggestion that he should have stepped up as back up for Taylor. Signing a left back doesn't change anything in any other position. We needed to replace Stephen Ward.

I would doubt any of our local journalists would have known to be honest. The club don't open up to them on any transfers now and the club have also limited the number of people who do know what's happening. This one came out of Stoke and I would think that would be the first he knew about it.

Will prove a really good signing IMO, might not get everyones pulses racing but I think it's as good as we could hope for after it became clear we were not pursuing Adams further.

We need a third striker who can notch 8-10 goals to compliment Barnes and Wood hitting similar numbers, we don't currently have that. People can whinge about Vydra not getting a chance till they're blue in the face, he didn't do anything in his rare appearances to get the pulses racing, has failed at this level before, and Dyche has clearly seen nothing in him when training to make him trust him with the responsibility of being the third choice striker for a Premier League team.

We needed another option to alleviate pressure on those two, to be a viable alternative when there's loss of form, suspension or injury and was at a good price and has a track record in this league. Rodriguez hits every criteria and sorry to trot this old line out but, we will get an extra 5-10% out of him with his history with the club, in my opinion.

I think it was half now and half next season-so £10million-but whatever both him and Pieters cost us compared, with young players that is money gone, as is the money spent on Cork and Defour-but if these signings keep us up and both at an age where they should be capable of playing at this level again, then it will still be money well spent, provided we are able to get in someone who can a)play football b) bloody run faster than anyone else in the team. Assuming Crouch is gone these two will push us up to a squad size of 20 plus 3 keepers and leaving out Dunne and Agyei who are both over 21.
If no one leaves we have space for 2 more signings for the 25 squad

There was a time when signing a player over 30 was unheard of but that's changed dramatically now and I look at the likes of Tommy Hutchison back in the 80s and more recently the likes of Mitchell Thomas, Kevin Ball and Grezza who all did superbly well for us. These days a 30 year old is probably about at his peak.

Chris Wood with the best ratio of our current strikers? Love to see it.

Not sure goals to game rations can be considered given how different all these players are. Jay, for instance, played a lot of his games for Southampton on the left hand side while someone such as Charlie was expected to get the goals.

Jay offers more than the other 3 as he is much more than a striker. Football's coming home.

Think that shows what my post above alluded to - he will be good for 8-10 a season for us, perfect to compliment the other two.

Saints at home opening day too - give him penalties and the armband for the day - let's nostalgia the **** out of it!

Get Christian Kalvenes over for the half time draw and Jimmy Robson on the VAR - come on!!

PS apologies for the offseason cabin fever......

Neither signing sets the pulses racing although I think some people on here seem to think that signings are supposed to be exciting and that the transfer window is a source of entertainment - it isn’t.

Pieters makes sense. He will provide experienced competition for Taylor without directly threatening his development. Not an exciting signing but very good value and just the kind of player we need.

Rodriguez is without a shadow of a doubt an upgrade on both Vokes and Crouch so I don’t see the problem with this.

It would certainly be nice to add a bit of youth and maybe a wildcard signing that would add some creativity and flair into the side but as another poster has alluded to, it makes sense to plug the gaps first. If we can get these two signings over the line, which it looks like we almost have, then it will give us a good platform to add another couple of ‘exciting’ signings in the next few weeks.

Also you have a short memory as will never forget your slagging off of Howe - but at least he goes for youth
What division is our squad in?

Two very good signings if we get Jay over the line.

Both absolutely improve the squad.

If we could get a decent midfielder in, and get Pieters and Rodriguez over the line, I'd be fair chuffed with that. Then, if Tarkowski does leave, we'd need a strong replacement.

Who'd make way for Rodriguez? Barnes and Wood did well during the second half of the year, and I bet they're hard work to play against. Personally, I wouldn't want to see that partnership breaking up.
