We could've played 4-5-1 without Rodriguez.

Vydra can play on the flank, Cam or striker.
Hendrick middle, flank and cam.
Barnes has played on the left wing/attacker before if I remember rightly.
Taylor has appeared on the left wing for us.

We didn't need to sign Jay to allow us to play a different formation, just people on here thinking it was needed.

aggi wrote:I'd argue that the type of signing that has been extremely successful for us has been the investment signing.

Fletcher, Austin, Trippier, Mee, Ings, Vokes, Barnes, Keane, Gray, Tarkowski,Pope,(Hendrick to a lesser extent), Taylor - we signed at least one promising player in their early twenties pretty much every season. That was good for the team in that we had players who'd been trained in the tactics ready to come through and good for the finances because we made a lot of money on them.

Taking the view that we can't afford to do that might work in the short-term but we'll come unstuck eventually.
I would agree with you - that sort of signing has been successful for us. But firstly, the market has changed a bit, as we've discussed. And secondly, it's not the case that we've stopped adding players to the squad who revitalise it from beneath and might turn a profit: whilst no-one would claim last summer was a roaring success, Gibson in particular was of that ilk (25 when we signed him) and still might be (as you rightly point out, some of those players have previously come through after a bedding in year); it's also only July this year and there's 5 weeks till the window closes, so we may very well do that business again; and in any event, I'm not sure we can exclude from this conversation players who come up from within like Dwight McNeil - and who knows, there might be another one or two in the system.

Well they can but not very well. (Or else we're wasting our money on Jay and he wouldn't improve us compared to the above.)

Saying what a bargain we got whilst also arguing that he won't improve the team is difficult. You need to pick one or the other.

I suspect everything has been agreed so it would then be down to the medical. They are so thorough these days. Seems, according to reports, that the medical was today. If so I’d probably expect the signing could be announced tomorrow.

Another link from Peter O’Rourke of Sky.

Burnley have made a move to sign highly-rated Swedish striker Joel Mumbongo.

Way Up north where its nowhere near the Congo
He speeds past his man, he leaves him for dead Ooh.
He sticks it in the corner and he dances a dainty tango
Then we all shout "watch out for Mumbongo"

Oooooh Mumbongo, Mumbongo, Watch him score a Goalo

Funnily enough, I flew out to Tunisia with my family this morning from Birmingham Airport. The West Brom squad were floating about on their trip to Spain. Me and my lad couldn't see Jay anywhere and joked he must finally be on his way back!

Interesting shout, barely hear of him now but he was a really good player for Wigan and for the first couple of years at Everton. Probably available very cheaply. If I remember rightly, Coyle tried to sign him for us when he was leaving Scotland but he obviously ended up at Wigan.

I preferred the suggestion of Joe Allen that some mentioned earlier, would be happy with either and preferably both though!

Coyle upset the Hamilton chairman over the Easton deal and said he wouldn’t allow McCarthy to come to Burnley. He went to Wigan and then Martinez took him to Everton.

So just who is it then? The suspense is killing me. I hate these transfer windows. You just never know what is true and what isn't. I want Heaton and Tarkowsky to stay, Rodriguez to sign and Hart and Crouch to go. Can someone tell me that is what is about to occur.

Add to that another winger due to the injury records of messers Brady and Lennon and to some extent JBG and we have ourselves a decent squad! I’d look at possibly moving on Lennon also due to his age and the ideal replacement as many have already pointed to is Jarrod Bowen , goal threat, hard worker and only 22 years old.

UTC[/quote]
If BFC had wanted to move Lennon on, they wouldn't have activated the extra years option on his contract, so he's staying unless someone offers us silly money in the January window, I'd think! If Brady is underwhelming again then I'd hope the board would cut their losses in January too.
We need a new style of winger, like most of the Premier League teams have, one who can attack the box, not just the full back- McNeil has shown the supposedly experienced players the way in this regard.

This is what Dyche said last week.

Phil won’t be in today as he’s talking to a club. It’s just been to help him out really, he’s a great pro and I’ve known him a few years. If that doesn’t work out, we’re open to him coming back.

"Dave Jones has been in as well, our former player - a fantastic servant.

"I’ve no problem helping out people, Dave Edgar came in at the end of last year to make sure he got some training time.

“We try to accommodate former players and people we know."
