Yes, unlike most clubs who are linked with players with weeks before they sign them (eg Villa & Heaton, Man Utd & Maguire etc, etc).SGr wrote:I don’t remember the last proper signing we made that didn’t make it out to the media at least a day or two in advance.
The first mention of Pieters on this thread was less than 24 hours before his signing was announced.

That is a fair enough point. Either way though, with 11 days to go I am sadly thinking this much needed midfielder isn’t going to get done.Tall Paul wrote:Yes, unlike most clubs who are linked with players with weeks before they sign them (eg Villa & Heaton, Man Utd & Maguire etc, etc).

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS (MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Oddly I do think a midfielder will come in.
It’s based on little more than blind faith. But it would be absolutely mental beyond even our previous risks we’ve taken in that position, particularly given Dyche’s comments on Defour yesterday.
Either that or we’ve real hope in Josh Benson.

I'm sure we'll make at least one more signing and it's likely to be a midfielder.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS (MUST CONTAIN LINK)
I have to say as well .... forget all the non-stop shite talked on the 24/7 news channels .... take a look at the completed signings list pinned.
There aren’t many signings I see there which have definitely, 100% categorically improved sides. Yes some punts will come off, obviously the promoted sides have strengthened (but they’ve further to come from) but other than that i’m not seeing too many club’s business and thinking “they’ve had a great summer”.
All points to it being a crazy busy last two weeks of the window.

Cork, Westwood and Hendrick, unless I've missed something.
Defour will be back whenever, so we could do with a youngster as a filler.

Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS (MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Yes but due to JBG, Brady and Lennon seemingly being injury prone, Hendrick has become more of a rs midfielder and took to it well actually. That meant we could not bring on fresh legs in cm for virtually half a season. Totally unacceptable situation and one for which there will be no excuse if we don't bring in a cm player now.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote:We've got 3 haven't we at present who are fit?

Forget Defour. If he returns it is a bonus.
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS (MUST CONTAIN LINK)
3 certainly isnt enough, you are 1 injury from.habing no cover or putting a square peg in a round hole.taio wrote:Three isn't enough. I'm sure we'll sign another. Plus Hendrick's best position last season was right mid.
The cover player is also our Jack of all trades for other roles too, so can't really expect him to available for CM all the time either.
I think we will get in a couple more, and I'm almost certain 1 will be a central midfielder.
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS (MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Very true. And if we had such an injury Hendrick isn't effective enough to play CM in a 442 for a sustained period. He's a better option on the right hand side when JBG isn't the right choice for the opposition. It's essential we bring in a CM.MACCA wrote:3 certainly isnt enough, you are 1 injury from.habing no cover or putting a square peg in a round hole.

Vydra can play on the flank, he's done it before.taio wrote:Three isn't enough. I'm sure we'll sign another. Plus Hendrick's best position last season was right mid.
Jay can also do that, he did that at Saints, left side of the attacking 3.

No signs that Vydra will play that role. But in any case it doesn't alter the fact that 3 CMs isn't enough.

I agree it isn't enough, hence why I said we need a filler, young lad maybe.taio wrote:No signs that Vydra will play that role. But in any case it doesn't alter the fact that 3 CMs isn't enough.
Just saying that a couple of our players can go on the flanks if needed when the main wingers pick up injuries it doesn't have to be Hendrick.

We need someone who is better than Cork and Hendrick in central midfield. Cork would be a decent option from the bench, on past subs appearances in the Europa league he came on to influence the game and scored goals.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote:I agree it isn't enough, hence why I said we need a filler, young lad maybe.

If we don't get a physical athlete in there who can protect the defence we will concede bucket loads again.

I'd want 5 central midfielders, with one being an up and coming youngster. So we have 3, like you say. We need another plus someone coming through the youth system, ideally, as you can tell SD prefers 4-4-2.
The youngster would be the 5th CM.

Doom, gloom, doom, gloom.
Cork and Hendrick were absolutely fine in the 2nd half of last season and so no reason they shouldn’t carry on in the same way...
Re: BFC TRANSFER NEWS (MUST CONTAIN LINK)
Defour can't be classed as one of the midfielders because he'll never play. Cork isn't really up to the standard anymore, sadly. Hendrick is preferred in one of the wide midfield slots or in front of two others. Benson is a young lad and we need to get him out on loan.
To my mind, that leaves us with Westwood as the only midfielder I would be wholly confident of starting with, who had an outstanding second half of the season. We need one more midfielder. Every other position is sorted.
What a poor do if we can't manage to sign just one midfielder in the next two weeks.

Cork is absolutely fine. Difficult first half of last season but same can be said pretty much across the board. Decent second half of the season. He'll make a significant contribution next season too.

That leaves us with
- Cork who struggled for big parts of last season. He got a bit better after Christmas but if there had been competition for his place then he would have surely been dropped months before.
- Westwood. Unexpected surprise last year. Did really well and hopefully can match that form this season (but what if he doesn’t or he gets injured ?)
- Hendrick. How many times in last 2 years has Dyche picked him in centre mid ? I can’t remember many - and if he couldn’t get in based on the form of Cork last year Dyche can’t fancy him much in that position.
We massively need a quality centre midfield player who is good enough to go straight in the first eleven. I don’t care whether he is young or old - he just needs to be good enough to play in the team now. If he’s young - great but that seems unlikely that we can pick up a young player who is good enough for the league and going to cost less than £20m.

But if you want to use the latest form guide of 10 or so games it goes back up to 1.8 per game.Hibsclaret wrote:Bucketloads like the 27 in the second half of last season......less than 1.5 per game. For Dyche's game plans to work we need more clean sheets and less goals conceded. Or bring in a goal scoring midfielder and try and get 10 more.

There was no jail involved.
You can’t have it both ways and point to a bad run on one hand but imply we were lucky to go on a good run.
We stayed up because we deserved it. Our form after the Everton defeat was brilliant - top 6 material. Even more impressive given the position we were in, the pressure we were under and the manner of the Everton defeat in front of our own fans. We won the big important games against our rivals too - Fulham, Cardiff, Brighton, Bournemouth - no luck in any of those games. We stayed up pretty easily in the end.
We do need a midfielder though !

Can’t argue that Cork & Westy were fine after Xmas. The problem comes if one or both are out long term. We have plenty of so-so back up who can do a job for a game or two but long term I would have concerns.

Take whatever stats you want this is Burnley in the premier league and it is hard to attract much better than Cork where there are no injury doubts (ala Defour). Cork has more than proved he is good enough.
