Hear me out, he knows the squad, the standards we set, the framework, will be extremely cheap compared to others, will only be 4th choice, and would hardly be used in the premier league, just for rest purposes in the cups and if we are down to the bare bones. I'd be surprised if he started more than half a dozen games in all competitions if he did sign.

Also allows us to re evaluate next summer then.
We need quality in CM, but we dont want to buy someone just to fill the numbers, for the sake of it. As Klopp did with VVD, the right player is worth waiting for. IF we cant find the quality CM, then Jones is a no brainer as cover until the next window, providing he's shown enough in his training sessions with us.
Does anyone know if he is still training with us at the moment, its seems a while since he went to Portugal with us.

It amazes me that, given our history in the transfer window while in the Premier League and given the messages that come out of the club, people are still annoyed/upset/surprised about our lack of signings at this stage of the window.

I will bare my arse in the middle of the pitch against Southampton if we sign David Jones. There is no chance. If Dyche had been considering it he would have had him take part in a pre season match or two which he hasnt. He is helping out a friend of his and the best mate of our Captain. If this in any way helps keep Heaton here via conversations he may have with Jones about maybe moving and Jones telling him he is lucky to be in such a welcoming environment then it will have proved to be a masterstroke from Dyche

Totally agree. The suggestion from the other poster that this could be a good idea for a year has to be a joke. I was a big fan but this would be going backwards and inexcusable based on our income and serious need to strengthen this area.

Apparently wages were an issue and Burnley would only offer him a 2 year contract

David Jones played for the Clarets while on their recent tour! :?

I should warn you Cleveleys - it's an offence for spectators to enter the field of play...and certainly offensive to display your arse! ;)

David Jones wouldn’t get a start for Preston North End yet he’s a topic of discussion on this thread? Very confusing.

But you can't strengthen the starting 11 in every position in every window no matter how much SSN would love us to. A signing like Stephens or Hogg would improve the quality of the squad. Kicking it down the road for 2 years may not be the worst decision, if it gives time for youth to flourish, or for the TV bubble to burst. I hope for better than those 2 but SD knows how to work with this type of player.

Marney's second cruciate was on 22nd January 2017, and Ashley Westwood was signed on 31st January 2017. Not so much shoulda, woulda, coulda, but shoulda, woulda, didda!

I assumed he was spending some time on the recruitment of younger players when the big cull occurred of the U-18/23's, you don't let so many go unless you have others in mind.
If he could just find us a CMF & few 21/22 yo's with promise at a reasonable cost then that'd be ideal.
I think some on here might begrudgingly approve then!

I understand what you mean but we were interested 18 months ago & he hasn't got any younger & doesn't always get into the Brighton team. It'd increase the numbers, not sure about the quality. As to kicking it down the road for 2 years, isn't that what we did last year? Not just CMF but at RB with Bardsley, also Walters & Wells plus to some extent, Crouch? And the older the players get, the more kicking it down the road you have to do!

Yes but that wasnt a pre scheduled pre season match. I am guessing the 2 clubs wee at the same place or near enough and felt it wouldnt be the worst idea to just have a kick about for fitness levels

Going to throw a hat in the ring (no, not heard anything about him - THIS - window, but I know for certain we enquired a couple of times in the last two-three years when he was at Everton then last summer at Watford), Tom Cleverley.

Dyche is a massive fan, had him at Watford, and he fits the profile. Wages would be massive but he isn't a guaranteed starter at Watford and is a Northern lad. He is still only 29 and fits the mould of what I think Dyche looks for in a central midfielder. I am not saying he would by MY pick, but if I had a tenner to stick on someone I would imagine we are currently trying to sign for that position, he would be the one I would potentially bet on.

They had a David Jones on the bench on Saturday. He didn't come on and I don't know whether it was him or not. He's apparently been training with another Championship club in the North West who has previously played for.

A little bit unfair on Jones. He was crucial for his whole 3 years at Burnley. He played in two magnificent promotion seasons and a season in the Premier League. Not bad for a one dimensional midfielder....

 David Jones was never really likely to be a strong rumour, he left for a reason. It was clearly of one of ours wanting a favour.

Can people stop wringing their hands now about what they heard and move on to slamming the club about some other piece of sourceless / groundless rumour they heard down the pub.

One might be true :?

Not too worried by not bringing in another midfielder as we are generally in very good shape in all other positions.

The big worry now is that our pre-season planning could take a real knock if we loose players at this late stage because we are so poor on getting deals (replacements) over the line.

Its looking inevitable now that Maguire will leave Leicester but it could well be us that suffer if Tarks release clause is met and we have little time to get a replacement.

Also if we loose Heaton to Villa, Pope is say not fit to start the season and Joe Hart plays against Southampton, now that would be a real disaster and ruin my pre-season optimism, never mind another midfielder not coming in.

I'm sure Dyche is aware of the scenario with both Defour
and the need to have another central midfielder as we can't rely on Defour
and his fitness issues.

Hopefully one that can improve the team?

That's where I have a concern as I do feel if we managed to get
someone in who could improve the team then we'd be relatively well set up.
However, I do also feel that it's as likely that we do not get someone in who can make a difference
but someone who makes up the numbers -just in case.

If that happened then, for me, that would constitute a pretty poor transfer window
and leave us (apart from Jayrod) with the same team as last year.

I get the logic of your point with regards losing players, and the impact that it may have. I really don’t get the logic of not being worried about midfield because we are generally in very good shape in other positions.

Midfield is vitally important and it’s an area that we really could do with reinforcing. Let’s face it, there must be plenty in reserve for a decent signing.

If we don’t sort central midfield now, the problem will persist and get worse. And before we know it instead of it being the “only” problem position, it’ll be one of 2 or 3 that will all need sorting at the same time.

We leave this another year again, and summer 2020 will require about 3 first team signings minimum. Right back is going to become an issue if it isn’t already. We’ll need a winger too most likely. And that’s if we don’t also have players to replace (which we probably will given McNeil’s quality).
