Nothing wrong with the deal but would Gibson really want to drop a division?

Mirror:
Lowe wants to quit Portsmouth
Burnley could step up their pursuit of Jamal Lowe after the winger made clear his desire to leave Portsmouth.

Lowe scored 17 goals last season as Pompey won the EFL Trophy and narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship.

The 24-year-old – who is also being eyed by Wigan and Millwall – is valued at £3m by Pompey.

Arsenal are reportedly amongst a growing list of clubs keeping tabs on Burnley youngster Dwight McNeil.

The 19-year-old former Manchester United youth product enjoyed a stunning breakthrough season at Turf Moor and recently penned a new four-and-a-half year deal.

But according to the Burnley Express , the Gunners are monitoring the eight-goal winger - with Manchester City , Everton and Newcastle United amongst those also keen.

McNeil received his first England Under 20 call-up in March and trained with Gareth Southgate's senior side as they prepared for the Nations League finals.

He would be a more affordable exciting attacking option for Unai Emery as he faces being priced out of a move for Crystal Palace ace Wilfried Zaha.

Team-mate James Tarkowski has claimed interest from the big six is to be expected after his magnificent form over the second half of last season.

The England centre-back said: “It’s only natural. Any player doing well in the game will have people sniffing around them, especially with the age he is.

"He’s still so young and he’s got so much time to improve."
“That statistic [most productive teenager in the PL] wouldn’t surprise me because of his quality and the demand from him.

“He wants the ball, he wants to beat people, he’s gone to some big places and gone up against some big players and shown how good he is.

“Away at Anfield, even though we were beaten, he was our best player that day and he’s probably been one of our best players over the second half of the season. That shows how good he is but he just needs to keep doing that now"

"Dwight got his opportunity and he took his chance, which is what you need to do in football. It’s all about getting opportunities, he grabbed it with both hands and performed to the level he has been doing since he first came in.

“He had been one of our top performers in pretty much every game. Fair play to him but now the challenge is to keep doing it week in week out.

“It’s all well and good having a good six months, but in football you’ve got to keep on going for six/seven years. He needs to keep doing that now.”

I'm sure the Burnley board are aware of the difference in money between staying up and going down.
Which makes any fee for someone like McNeil needing to be astronomical, given he's recently signed a lengthy contract. Even £50 million would be too low, when you look at his potential and how the market prices are growing.

How much money in the bank do we need? No amount of money for McNeil is good value if we refuse to spend it.

I often agree with you, but McNeil is worth no where near 50m.
If he has a full season like he had of the last, then you might start the papers talking of 30m+.

He not on the same level as Madison IMO, and I dont think anyone would punt 30-40m on him after 1good top flight season , and remember he had a great season before that in the championship too.

But if you look at what he's worth to us, he could very well be the difference between us staying up and going down - it's certainly realistic with the side we have at the moment. Would we have stayed up had we not started playing him in the second half of the season? Personally, I highly doubt we would have.

That can be the difference of what? £100 million? So in this instance it's not always about comparing him to other players who we can't buy, but how much of a loss he'd be to us. Let's say for arguments sake, a team bid £40 million and we accepted it and then were relegated, it wouldn't have been worth the money we received vs keeping him and staying up.

Depends what we did with the 40m, as if we bought 2 first team players we might see/make a better team than just keeping 1 player in the team.

I dont want to sell him, but at the moment theres a lot of hype and after only a good maiden half season.
Theres been lots of 1 season wonders and next best things.
We need to keep the pressure off the lad, and not expect him to be keeping us up on his own ( as you pointed out you think he did last season)

The time has come to add to the first 11 and improve it, it can be argued we've not done that for 3 windows, we cannot afford to make that 4 windows on the bounce.

McNeil looked a class act in the recent Toulon Tournament. Very few Clarets have impressed me as much in International squads. If it doesn’t go to his head nothing can stop him.

If CP want £50m for Wan-Bissaka Dwight has to be worth similar. Forwards are usually priced higher than defenders anyway.

clickbait nonsense that the mirror and the mail have picked up from a filler piece in the now clickbait Burnley Express.

Same situation with Gylfi Sigurdsson, he was never worth what Everton paid, but he was worth that money to Swansea (and probably alot more) given they were relegated without him.

Yep, more clickbait..... A report not long back said the Arse had only £40m to spend this window, so what's the point in them looking, they wouldn't stump up £25m for Fraser before!
As another poster said, which Premier League club wouldn't be keeping an eye on the situation tho, they wouldn't be doing their job if they weren't!

This window seems to be following the trajectory of recent ones, with us almost at the start of pre-season training and still no new signings. This despite having a new Director of Football.

Nothing to do with having a new technical director. The manager has already said in interview that it will be another difficult window and deals are likely to be late in the day. We have to function as Burnley FC. We don’t have money to chuck at deals.

Incredibly it seems we’ve actually got poorer at signing players since Rigg was appointed.

Still, i’m sure somebody will be along shortly to tell me it takes time.

Pretty standard window so far. We’ve generally struggled to sign players at this level, perhaps with the exception of the summer of 2017.

I’m not expecting the line-up for the opener to differ much to what we saw last season. The British market is too rich for us and, despite talking about expanding our network since our first promotion under Dyche in 2014, we simply don’t appear to be able to make effective use of the international market.

I for one am not expecting much in respect to incoming.

We've been linked with a number of players but I doubt we'll get many in.
I was hoping it might be a tad different this transfer window especially
after appointing Rigg but, at present, it looks very much the same.
I don't think we've actually put an offer in for anyone as yet.

What's all this about Gibson being told he can leave?
Hopefully nonsense. We don't need to sell surely.

Would have thought we'd be relatively active given we do need
a few in. A forward and a midfielder are the bare minimum.
it's only a few weeks afore we're back for pre-season training.

I think we need to get our fingers out.
Fans will be extremely disappointed

No we don’t have money “to chuck on deals” but i’m struggling to see why we don’t have between £30m and £40m to spend at least.
We don’t really want to be getting any big signings wrong - given the jury remains out on last summers signings where we did spend £30m on 3 players who are now on the bench and we could be looking at losing money if we moved them on...or they decide they want to move on.
£40m doesn’t get you much these days but I would hope it could get us 2 players at least who are good enough for the first eleven.
I know we have the wage bill to think of aswell but with Ward and Walters already gone, Vokes and Crouch off the wage bill and looking to sell Wells that has to free up around £7m a year in wages.
We also have Vokes transfer fee, sell on fee from Danny Ings and potentially something from Wells...best part of a one off £10m here too.
With £30m profit from last year to add to the reserves we have built up from previous years profits we can comfortably afford to spend £40m.

But we chucked money at Wells , Vydra, and Gibson, best part of 30 million less than 10 starts between them .

Because of our financial status all our signings will be gambles to some extent as the players we sign may or may not make it as Premier League standard. So it's inevitable that some will not work out. That's just the way it is, so why should we expect anything different?

What do you mean our “financial status” ?
Are you referring to being debt free ?
Or the best part of £100m profit in last few years ?
Or more income / revenue in the last 6 years than the rest of our history put together ?
Or our state of the art training facilities ?
Or our biggest sponsorship deals in history ?

Our financial status is the best it’s ever been.
But all that said I think our transfer dealings on the whole have been excellent and we make less mistakes in the market than most clubs.

Its about that time when I start my annual minimal signings requirements list. It's been a long time since this has been met.

So as an absolute minimum we have to sign 3 assuming Tarks amd Gibbo are staying. A starter in centre midfield and a striker at least as good as anyone we have preferably someone capable of playing the number 10 role. Finally a young attacking left back as cover for Charlie.

Mooy and JRod will be fine for the first 2.

In terms of our financial status we can outspend pretty much every club in the Championship, the vast majority of European clubs and be there or thereabouts against a third or so of the Premier League teams.

We may not have as much money as some clubs but we're certainly not paupers.

Just a quick couple of questions. How many months has it been since Rigg was appointed and how many first teamers have we signed since ??. I am assuming he is not on commission??

Not sure how you can sign players outside of the windows but I don’t think, given that post, you understand his role.

There is an interview somewhere on the club’s website where he explains it but his main role he says is helping Sean Dyche but stressed it was Dyche who would choose which players we go for.

From what I can see, he’s taken a senior role over the academy, he’s working with the recruitment team and also increasing our technical scouting staff. He and his teams will be responsible for gathering data on players to pass on to Dyche who will have the say on which players we go for. I would think then that the player negotiations will remain with the chairman.

By financial status I mean that we are not able to spend as much as other Premier League teams. So we will find it hard to recruit players who have already shown they Premier League standard or those who appear fairly certain to reach that standard. Therefore we have to buy players who might be good enough, like Tarkowski, Gudmondsson, Wells or Vydra. They might turn out to be good enough but inevitably some won't make the grade.

He was pushed out of Huddersfield by Dean Hoyle because of a contract issue

Why do you keep making excuses like a yes man? quick to defend, not so quick to voice your own opinion.

Where was your opinion of the risk we took in January, deep in trouble, getting rid of Vokes and bringing in a cheap, old, Championship bench warmer for peanuts?

I’m stating a fact which came from someone involved at Huddersfield. End of story. So stop picking up on facts to and twisting them with your nonsense just to fuel your anti-Dyche, anti-Burnley campaign.
