Villa up to £91m spent so far as per Sky Sports. Definitely in my top 3 for clubs I would like to see relegated this season.

Which is why it's better to hold on to him for a season but do you do the decent thing and let him go (what's best for the player) or put the club first and hang on to him.

I'd put the club first and hang on to him and play him week in week out, then he can go, if he still chooses, at the end of the season. If his form fails, or his attitude affects his form (doubtful for Heaton), or he gets injured then we use Pope earlier than planned.

I would not be selling him to a rival.

I'd be wanting a premium if it's Villa, but not letting him leave isn't necessarily putting the club first, if he's not happy.

Looks well doesn't it they spend big on over priced players spending astronomically
Then come in with a derisory offer to land one of the most important positions
Try taking the **** out of someone else Villa
Hope you have one season in the sun

Does anybody else look at Villa's squad and signings and think they're going to really struggle?

Yes, Dean Smith won't let them be like Fulham, he's more in the Sean Dyche mould

So we let him go next year to another newly-promoted club? For nothing, & lose out on £8/9m-ish for groundhog day to happen?

We're trying to stay in the league as long as possible (at some point we will go down), so losing out on £9m might be price worth paying in refusing to strengthen a rival and better our chances of another year at the £100m+ table.

Sure it might happen next year anyway but that's a year away in time and money.

Yep - keep him and if he plays like he did last season he’ll be a big part in securing another season in the Premier League and another £120m.
Plus as fans we get another season seeing for many of us our favourite Burnley keeper ever.
Personally I prefer that to having £42m in the Bank instead of £34m.....that doesn’t float my boat as much on a Saturday afternoon when I go watch the team

another year on and Pope is No 1 and Heaton is another year older - hence why the club have offered 1 year extension and not 3 years - the club cannot guarantee No 1 slot for Tom for 3 years, but they can say this year you've got it because it was yours at the end of last season.

He's currently with the Chelsea squad, new manager, clean slate etc.
Plus if Lampard plays Kante in his proper position that frees up a spot for Drinkwater to maybe get a fair chance to show what he can do.

Vydra out on loan to a championship club. Why would we keep him and loan him out, we might as well sell him.

Heaton allowed to go if AV up their bid. Complete contradiction to SD's comments.

SD is looking for a midfielder because of Defours fitness problems.

These are rumours anyway one of us could have made up. There are so many crap football sites now that just make up or regurgitate old rumours that most of them can be ignored.
I would hope we are seriously looking for an upgrade in CM

John Cross is a very respected journo and has plenty of contacts in the game so have no reason to doubt his piece on Heaton

Not read through everything on here but seem to remember that we were only prepared to offer Heaton an extra year after this whereas he was looking for a longer deal

Pretty sure he had the chance to go out on loan in January but he wasn't interested. Happy to sit on his backside and collect his money every week.

Good young player, domestic, lots of potential, can play anywhere across the front line, already lives local, part of the Ireland squad, scored 12 outfield goals last season in only 27 games ( primarily from the left wing) and he was obviously going to move in this window for a price well within our budget.

£6 - 8m ( with a resell clause ) is a snip in this market. A half decent season in the Premiership could see his value rise substantially.

We could have developed him into the quick Centre Forward that we arguably need, because he showed a lof of promise in the couple of outings he got there last season. Having a new player in the squad, who could do a job on either wing, would have been beneficial should any of our existing players leave next year.

Well done Sheffield, cracking signing that could easily turn out to be the bargain of the window going forward.

Can't believe that for a moment, when we are giving new signings 2 and 3 years.

The offer of a one year deal would be an insult and the equivalent of a strong push towards the door after everything he has already done for us and can still do.

“Cracking signing” ?
Really ?
You mention his ok record last year but that’s his 3rd season at Preston and he played 40 odd games in each of his previous 2 seasons and didn’t pull up many trees.
He’s 25 this year so whilst I agree he has time to develop he’s also had plenty of opportunity to do better than he has.
In this current market £6m to £8m looks about right - if anything it’s too much.

Seriously not got a clue why you think this is such a great signing other than some campaign you have where you seem to love to criticise our transfer strategy and think everyone else’s is great.

Plenty. Live over this way and a couple of my best pals are Leeds fans. They couldn’t speak any less of him if they tried.

Couldn’t hold his water, never mind a long range shot. Pretty sure there’s a video compilation on social media of all his mistakes over the last 18 months.

Would love to take someone off Leeds (Phillips) as it winds my mates up but this would not be a good signing on any way at all.

Yep deal is nearly done.
He’s a Wells type signing for me - but the difference for Sheff United is that he will probably get straight in their team whereas if we bought him just like Wells he’s lucky if he makes our bench.
Based on his career to date he’d either be our 5th best striker or 5th best wide man.
There’s a reason why only Sheff United are interested in buying him and why even in this crazy market he’s going for only £6m to £8m.

If he is going to be number one then possibly until January. If we are happy with Pope or Hart being our keeper then yes let him go provided the offer is right.

Think they've shown their intent already by the contracts offered, they prefer £8m now & maybe put towards a CM or £3m in Jan when choice of midfielders is less. Just can't get a handle on the Hart situation tho

There’s a lots of ifs and buts there....if he gets injured, if Leeds go up, if Leeds want to buy him, if Tom wants to go to Leeds etc

More likely than your scenario is that Heaton doesn’t get injured. He retains the no 1 shirt and either he signs a new contract with us and stays or we get another year out of him where he helps secure another year in the premier league and another £120m income...and he moves on a free and we start again with another really good keeper in Nick Pope.
If he leaves I don’t really care where he goes because there is nothing we can do about it - so why worry about something outside of your control ? Even if he decides he wants to leave now - again why worry about where he goes. We should just make the best effort we can to keep him and then it’s up to Tom....if he leaves we just focus on ourselves and the players left here - like we always have done when players we all want to stay end up leaving or being sold.
