Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
Sickener.
Two friends accused of using a stolen bank card to buy a winning lottery ticket have vowed to sue the National Lottery after being denied the £4million prize.
After they were questioned on the absence of bank accounts, Goodram and Watson initially claimed they had bought the scratch card with loose change. They later changed their story and claimed a mystery friend called ‘John’ had bought the winning ticket on his debit card for them. When they were further questioned about John, they could not give his surname, address or phone number.

Re: Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
surely Camelot can trace the "stolen" card used to pay for the ticket and pay the prize to the owner of that card. Please dont tell me they wont have records of the transaction...
I had to laugh at the quote from their lawyer...
‘My clients consider Camelot are behaving in a culturally racist way by subjecting them to a level of scrutiny, checking and vetting, they would not otherwise do if the person who claimed the prize spoke in a posh accent.’
what the f#ck has their accent got to do with it? or race for that matter?

I'm sure they can for standard Lotto tickets, as I've read of people stealing the ticket from people but then not knowing where the real winner bought it from and so not receiving the winnings. It sounds like Camelot know it was bought with a debit card, hence why they changed their story from loose change to JohnRick_Muller wrote:surely Camelot can trace the "stolen" card used to pay for the ticket and pay the prize to the owner of that card. If Camelot know that it was paid for by a debit card, then they surely know which debit card it was. Presumably this information will come out in court (though possibly not made public).

I pay cash for my weekly lottery because am of that age that cash is still King.
when I win the millions tonight they better not think I am "dodgy" and not pay me.

Nothing. They're trying to get a settlement and are using a smear tactic to try and make Camelot want to avoid a trial.

In that case does the actual owner of the card have a claim to the winnings?dsr wrote:If Camelot know that it was paid for by a debit card, then they surely know which debit card it was. Presumably this information will come out in court (though possibly not made public).
Camelot would probably counter the claim by saying the card owner did not consciously purchase the ticket and that it’s highly unlikely they would have made the same transaction if the card wasn’t stolen.
Camelot is the only winner.

Wonderful story. I note their barrister is very careful not to say that they didn't use a stolen bank card but instead is trying the argument that the Lottery shouldn't be asking them the question of how they purchased the ticket in the first place. Hope they get nowhere. Plus, they must have some pretty stupid mates who lent them the money to go on a big bender on the basis that they won the lottery and would pay them back later. i wouldn't lend money to my mates on that basis and none of them have a history of being career criminals!

Re: Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
I saw another article where one of them says, "Where's the proof that it was a stolen debit card?"
Well you don't say that if it's not stolen, because that's basically saying, "Sure, it's stolen, but you can't prove it".

Both of these scrotes have appeared on Bolton's "Most Wanted" list. Brilliant !

Re: Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
If only they had remembered whose name was on the card, they could have offered to split the cash three ways ...
Re: Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
All they had to do was claim King Arthur bought it.
Re: Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
I suppose it would be the same if they had bought the cards with counterfeit money.
The argument then might be if they knew the money was counterfeit. If they didn't then presumably they purchased in good faith. That would be an interesting debate.

But how can you use a debit card and be not sure whether or not it's stolen?Hipper wrote:I suppose it would be the same if they had bought the cards with counterfeit money.

The clue must be when you look at the card and it says "Mrs Dorothy Eccles" and you're a bloke and don't know anybody called Dorothy.
Re: Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
What I meant was buying the lottery cards (not the debit cards). I should have been clearer.
Re: Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
All people do is touch the card (contactless)FactualFrank wrote:But how can you use a debit card and be not sure whether or not it's stolen?

Lets face facts Frank ... have you ever had anyone check the name on your card if/when you use it that way....
Contactless payments are fraught with danger because of the easy way stolen cards can be used in that way....

Re: Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
What I mean is using counterfeit money is easier to pass off as an innocent mistake. But using a stolen debit card, is harder to blag your way out of. So I'm just saying it's not really the same, if that's what you meant. But there may be crossed wires, so you may not have meant that.Hipper wrote:What I meant was buying the lottery cards (not the debit cards). I should have been clearer.
Re: Men refused £4 million scratchcard win after ‘using stolen card’ to sue National Lottery
If their case has no legal validity Camerlot will apply for the claim to be struck out, leaving them with hefty legal fees, I just hope that the tax payer is not funding this

Two absolute no marks are going to find the cash to sue a multi million pound business. Good luck lads.

They don't check the cards if you use the PIN, either. Most places now, you put your own card into the machine and the shop assistant never handles it. Though of course the PIN is the security there, not the name on the card.Bosscat wrote:All people do is touch the card (contactless)

Isn't that why they restrict contactless to £30? Because that's the level of fraud that the banks deem acceptable for the sake of convenience?

You don’t get legal aid to sue folk and no lawyer is going to risk taking on Camelot in a £4m case brought to him by a couple of scroats,Blackrod wrote:Legal Aid probably or 70% to the lawyer if he wins.

Why aren't investigations ongoing with them about their potential theft and use of someone's card?

But the ticket was bought on a card these two numb-nuts don't own. The details of the transaction will give the data needed to cross-reference a card reported lost/stolen? They'll know who 'John' is?

I suspect the police have decided they have better things to do.
