Napoli 1967
Came across this today. Possibly an excerpt from “when we were kings”
We’d have been a tad upset if Harry’s penalty save had gone in off the ref.

Re: Napoli 1967
Wow, that takes me back!
Harry Thomson, god in a green jersey, had the game of his life. Then the armed guard back to the airport and the escape back home. The millionaire Italians were not impressed losing to this small club from Lancashire, but the truth is we'd won the tie in the first leg at the Turf with an outstanding display and 3-0 win.

There was a video of what I thought was the first leg on YouTube a few years ago, and pre-match you could hear our fans chant Harry Thompson’s name to the Trumpet Voluntary wedding tune. I can’t find the thing now.

I remember being stood on the Kop at Blackpool the Saturday following this game when Harry saved a penalty at our end.

When I worked down the Cabaret Club in Rosegrove, I got to know Harry and his drinking pal, Brian O'Neil, quite well. I remember they used to drink pints of bitter and as the evening wore on, they would also have vodka and lime chasers. Great lads the both of them.

The good old days, vino blanco, however, you have to remember that football was nowhere near as good then as it is now.Vino blanco wrote:When I worked down the Cabaret Club in Rosegrove, I got to know Harry and his drinking pal, Brian O'Neil, quite well. He was a penalty saving god. I remember City missing two in a 0-0 draw but did he save them both or did they skew one?

Sarcasm, Ashington? They certainly didn’t pass it around at the back.Ashingtonclaret46 wrote:The good old days, vino blanco, however, you have to remember that football was nowhere near as good then as it is now.

I was at the other end in the stand that day. I got a free lift from Les Latcham who couldn’t play because of the Napoli injury.Leisure wrote:I remember being stood on the Kop at Blackpool the Saturday following this game when Harry saved a penalty at our end.

Edit: I was a long way off with that one. It was 75-76 and Gerry Peyton was in the nets. First saved, second hit post on a re-take.Tricky Trevor wrote:He was a penalty saving god. I remember City missing two in a 0-0 draw but did he save them both or did they skew one?

Re: Napoli 1967
Haha --could well be. In the ten seasons 1959/60, when we became Champions, through to 1968/69 there was only one season which did not average 3 goals per game and that was 1968/69 (2.6255/game) The average per game in the top division during that period was between 3.0022 and 3.7316.Tricky Trevor wrote:Sarcasm, Ashington? The last 10 seasons of the PL has seen the average goals per game between 2.5658 and 2.97 (which was last season thanks to Man City's and Liverpool's exploits).
The average over 120 seasons is 2.97 per game.
Mind you, we have to remember that we have much better centre backs playing now with the likes of John Stones being rock solid and excellent at passing around the back four. Yes, football is definitely much better to watch now.

If my memory serves me right Harry saved 8 penalties in a row home and away and the only one I missed him saving was the Napoli one.

There’s a sentence in Clarets Chronicles about him only conceding 1 in 9. after he’d saved one from Martin Chivers.Bfc wrote:If my memory serves me right Harry saved 8 penalties in a row home and away and the only one I missed him saving was the Napoli one.

Great watch. When he pulls off the fantastic save from the header do you think the Napoli players are appealing that the ball crossed the line?Tricky Trevor wrote:Came across this today. Possibly an excerpt from “when we were kings”
