Is Defour fit

Post by Spike » Fri Jun 14, 2019 1:29 pm

sorry if this has been posted anywhere else but is he fit for this next season.

Seems Brady and JBG are at this stage. Maybe Lennon too

Have we anyone else injured?

Without any knowledge at all I would predict:

He will not report back for pre season training.
He will miss all our pre season friendlies
He may be able to start training after the season starts, so will miss our first few games
He will eventually make a couple of appearances from the bench late Sep/Oct time
He will start a couple of games, be off the pace and be subbed at half time
He will manage one game where he lasts beyond the hour mark and will then pick up a knock
He will be injured over Xmas and New Year
We may get a couple of cameos from him in Feb March which will lead to another injury.
You could add "again" to the end of all the above and it will fit into a number of his previous seasons with us.

That will be the last we will see of him in a Burnley shirt

Many people on here will describe him as the best player they have ever seen in a Burnley shirt

He will sail off to Belgium and retire having pocketed the best part of £8m in wages during his time with us.

Happy to be proved wrong on this one come May 2020 when he has been an ever present in the Premier League, secured a 5th consecutive season in the to flight and enjoyed his farewell performance in the FA Cup final at Wembley.....

If he isn't, he will be very close by now.

If he's fit, he plays. Question is, how long can he stay fit?

The guy HAS to be the first name on the team sheet when fit, so I hope for our sake he is. We are a far better footballing side when he's in.

He was the first name on the team sheet when he got fit last season and he weakened the team. A fully fit, in form Defour gets in.

Stevie D brings a new meaning to the term “cult hero.”

Some will want a stand naming after him next.

On talent definitely has. But based on his ability to last games, never mind seasons there is no way we can afford to be picking him ahead of players who have better 'legs'.

Time to replace him. If not move him on completely.

This "injury" saga really needs to be brought to an end this summer
The only update we seem to get is SD commenting "we are happy with what we are hearing from Belgium"
We are paying the guys wages but he decides where he is going for therapy - Tail wagging the dog springs to mind

I'm sure he has been living in a bubble all these months and BFC, Sean Dyche and the medical team have not been tracking his progress nor communicating with Steven Defour or the medical team he is working with at all during those 6 months before deciding to trigger the 1 year contract extension

Exactly. He may not want to be permanently injured, but the fact is, he is. And even if he ever is passed fit and takes to the field again, it really won't last. Let's face it, we've moved on and we have to be realistic and look for a replacement.

Is it too much to hope he'd take a few training sessions with the U-16's & under & try to pass some of his ball skills & nous onto them during his enforced absences from the 1st team? It may give him a taste for coaching, his skill shouldn't go to waste!

Sadly it seems this is the last season at the club for Defour, his legs just can’t take the intensity and demands that our team requires , he was amazing first half of last season but it seems his legs need to be bionic if it’s going to last a full season.

I suppose Anderlecht saw the injuries coming and cashed in as the skill this guy has when fit is unreal.

Shame really but we need to look for his replacement as soon as possible and not try and low ball the selling club. In the current market he is pretty much impossible to replace with the cash we have at our disposal.

Well, he looked pretty fit when he slapped that free kick in at Old Trafford.

Doubt if he'll ever get back to that standard, though tbh.

Great player but let’s be honest, probably not fit. And if Dyche is persisting with 4-4-2 next season, then that makes him a bench player.

And the problem then is, for me he just isn’t an impact substitute. He’s often the most sensible choice to come on, but he’s not a goalscorer, he’s not a destroyer, and he’s not a pacey 1v1 player. I’m struggling to see where he’ll fit in Dyche’s plans other than just sitting on the bench.

Nobody can deny he is a fantastic player, fitness issues are the downfall, but let's turn it into to a positive, if he can't do 90 rigorous minutes instead of bringing Peter Crouch on to predictively lump it forward, Defour and a pacy forward must be a better option ..

So why did we exercise the option of the additional year - over to you Mr Dyche

He’s a great player in a 4-5-1 just hasn’t got the engine for a 4-4-2, if he had he wouldn’t be playing for burnley that’s for sure.

Better to have him in the squad than not have him. I just can’t see more than a limited role for him if we’re playing 4-4-2 next year :?:
