What is the age limit for refs these days?
Martin Atkinson can't be far off 65.

Years ago they had to retire at 47 but that’s not allowed now. Atkinson is 48. Dean is 51 and could be the oldest.Juan Tanamera wrote:What is the age limit for refs these days?

Dean is the oldest, just ahead of Graham Scott.
Re: ARTICLE: Bankes and Madley become Premier League referees
They were/are running out of referee's, so have and are having to fast track a few. Theres quite s few at the top nearing retirement and they need to get the next batch up to speed and gaining experience.
They'll need to get up to speed with all the elite players nick names and the do's and don'ts regards the top players/teams.

I know it no longer applies, but what was the significance of the age 47 when refs had to retire?

Probably deemed to be the point of fitness levels dropping
Its a fast game now and half of them struggle to keep up now

No idea, was always the rule that they had to retire at the end of the season following their 47th birthday. Just done a bit of googling but can't find anything other than Scotland scrapped their 47 age limit in 2012.Suratclaret wrote:I know it no longer applies, but what was the significance of the age 47 when refs had to retire?
Sensibly it is now done on fitness to determine whether a referee can continue.

Referees only need to sit in a chair this season so fitness is no longer a requirement.

What was unbelievable was Lee Mason being promoted. In the same incompetent club as Darren Deadman, and the unbeatable Kevin Lynch.

Kevin Lynch loves his notoriety, he's making a comfortable living doing after dinner speaking.
I met him on the train once and I told him he wasn't notorious - just incompetent. He laughed.

I’d love to know what happened to Deadman. He was sacked by PGMOL just a day before the start of the 2017/18 Football League season but no explanation has ever been given. That keeps the theory going over the two lower division games that were scrutinised because of irregular betting. He referred both those games.ten bellies wrote:What was unbelievable was Lee Mason being promoted. In the same incompetent club as Darren Deadman, and the unbeatable Kevin Lynch.

That could explain his 'incompetence'.ClaretTony wrote:I’d love to know what happened to Deadman.
