Boxing tonight
Josh Warrington v Kid Galahad should be a good fight they hate each other. Warrington is a phenomenal fighter he is relentless and never stops coming forward. If Galahad can cope with the tempo I think it will go the distance with Warrington winning. His fans are the best in boxing even if they are Leeds.
Then Tyson Fury in the early hours in what should be a straight forward win, but you never know as proved with AJ getting beat. Fury should dominate.

How is Fury vs this other guy a legitimate PPV card? boxing is just all mismatch fights.

Re: Boxing tonight
“Tyson fury” and “fighter” are words that should never be used in the same sentence.
However, after the recent performance by our new golden boy, it seems like fury is likely to be our best attempt at having a British unified champion.
The heavyweight division is bereft of any real talent.

Re: Boxing tonight
Don't know anything about boxing but I quite like watching it, usually when its on BT.
Is it just me or are the under card fights so much more exciting than the main event?
This one just on was great, both going at it, great speed and skill and both going for it.

Two really good domestic fighters are Barrett and Woodstock - What is known as a trade fight where most people haven’t heard of them but those in the boxing trade are excited because it’s two evenly matched, skilled fighters.tarkys_ears wrote:Don't know anything about boxing but I quite like watching it, usually when its on BT.

We don’t see fights like that often in the UK nowadays. It’s usually hyped prospects against bodybags .... and they then wonder why these prospects fail at world level.

I’m a lover of the heavyweight division, have been since I saw Ali at his best fighting Dunne, Norton, Frazier and Foreman. I have also watched boxers since that era take the heavyweight division by storm - none more so than iron mike Tyson. I was absolutely convinced that Tyson would be the man to take over as the best heavyweight the world had ever seen. Then came the don king era after cus d’amato died. That ruined Tyson. He lost a controlling element to his barbarism. He lost an innocence and began to believe the hype. He couldn’t be beaten. Then he was. He never recovered.
Anyway, I digress. My point? I like boxers to be boxers, and I like fighters to be fighters. Fury is neither. He’s clever, but he’s neither of those things. He’s a wrestler. He can’t box like Ali boxed, he’s too big and too heavy (the heavyweights of Ali’s era were lightweights in comparison to the big lads nowadays) and he can’t fight like foreman and Norton fought because he absolutely will not take a punch in order to deliver one. So he maximises his ability. When it gets tasty, he grabs and holds and uses his size and weight to bear down on his opponent. He’s a big lump, and he’s resilient. But he will NEVER be remembered like any of those boxers I previously mentioned because he has neither the style nor the charisma to be a legend at this weight because he’s just a non-fighter. He doesn’t want to fight. Not in that same way that AJ doesn’t want to fight -he tapped out- fury hasn’t done that yet, and I doubt he will. But he’s not a fighter, his body language in the ring shows you that.

Re: Boxing tonight
Man .... I couldn’t disagree more.
The shot that he took against Deontay Wilder in the 12th round .... only a pure, true fighter gets up from that.
He is out, his senses are scrambled, all his training all of his life is meaningless at that point. Only one thing matters there and it cannot be taught - your instinct. And his instinct was to get up and go again .... pure fighting instinct.
It’s a long held opinion that there are natural fighters ... and then there are athletes taught to fight. Look at how Joshua responded to his knockdowns - which were nowhere near as heavy as Fury’s. He didn’t have that instinct - he’s an athlete taught to fight.
Fury has been put down by Wilder, Steve Cunningham and Neve Pajkic and in every instance he’s got up and won. My Dad said to me a while back that you’d have to nail Fury down to the floor if you wanted to stop him getting up and I tend to agree. He had two fights coming through against a guy called John McDermott - another traveller, tough as nails who just kept marching forward against him. Fury this week in interviews admitted he hadn’t trained properly for those fights and he looked knackered after 5/6 rounds in both fights .... but he didn’t give up and he found a way to win. That’s fighting for you.
On his style, Fury is the best pure boxer in the heavyweight division by a mile. His footwork and head movement are incredible for a man his size, he can box southpaw or orthodox and he has great handspeed. When he needs to he uses his massive reach and size to lean on opponents and smother them, but that is smart, smart boxing - and you mention Ali, well I can tell you that Ali would hold and wrestle in the 2nd half of his career after his layoff when his legs had gone.
The reason he does it in certain fights - Klitschko being the prime example - is a mental thing. Klitschko was a bully, almost always the bigger, stronger man in the ring. The Klitschko's used to get up and coming heavyweights over for sparring partners when they’d had 7/8 fights and batter them in sparring - sewing the seeds for when they fought for real. Fury refused to spar them and when he got in the ring he said he wanted Wlad to know he was bigger and stronger than him and that’s why he did it.
Incidentally, Ali did the same when he fought Sonny Liston first time. He put towels under his robe so he appeared bigger than he was and when Ali got in the ring he looked down on him and said “I got you now”. Kidology - Fury knows that, he’s a proper historian of the sport.
I know he says some idiotic things and he punched himself in the face ages ago. And I know he had the drugs thing ..... and I also know I tend to go on a bit about boxing.
But I promise you ..... Fury is a natural fighter. And he has more ability as a pure boxer than anybody in the division. I leave myself open to looking stupid, because it’s heavyweight boxing and one punch changes everything, but I honestly think he could go unbeaten for the next 5 years easy. He beat Wilder last time, will beat him easier in a rematch and I have always said he plays with Joshua.
You’re absolutely entitled to your opinion man and I appreciate you responding and the length you went to. The thing I love most about boxing is two people can watch the same thing and have vastly different opinions of it.

The swapping backwards and forwards between orthodox and southpaw is hindering Warrington.

I could imagine Galahad being hard to look good against for most fighters. He has that classic Ingle Sheffield style like Jonny Nelson and Junior Witter.

Re: Boxing tonight
That was a borderline fight but I had Kid nicking it, he certainly didn’t lose it by 3-4 rounds as was implied by the two judges.
He definately should have tried to throw a throw more clusters to edge an extra round or two but ultimately Kid has much fewer supporters and was away from home, and Warrington is a bigger name and earns more £££££ for all concerned. I’d have been astonished if Warrington hadn’t got the decision. That’s boxing.

Re: Boxing tonight
I got up to watch and i’m glad I did.
Unashamedly i’m a huge Fury fan so i’ll always watch him. He was fighting a man ranked the 7th best active German heavyweight so I wasn’t expecting a fight at all - I was hoping Fury would mow him down and he did.
I saw his slickness, his switch hitting and I also saw some nastiness to his work we don’t often see - and the man is a showman, no doubt.
The issue is in people expecting competitive fights - I know that sounds stupid, it’s box office so of course it should be competitive surely? Unfortunately that stopped being the case a while ago and people get hooked into what the promoters say. Schwartz was picked for two reasons :-
1. A big lump with a decent physique.
2. An unbeaten record.
So on paper it looks decent, but scratch even the tiniest amount of the surface and it unravelled pretty quickly. As Schwartz did in the ring, ironically.
