When was the first time...?
I recently got asked a couple of questions from someone who is currently having a break from this message board so thought I would post on their behalf...
I have a good idea on the first question but the second one I am unsure of. Maybe some on here could share their thoughts (without using Google )?
1) When were the squad numbers/names on the back of shirts introduced? I have a feeling this was our promotion season 1999/2000 but happy to be corrected.
2) When did teams start walking out from the tunnel together? I would think this would be mid-late 90's but can't put my finger on it. There used to be some good panto when teams used to come out separately!

Re: When was the first time...?
They'd be guesses but I'm pretty sure in answer to your first question it would have been 1 or 2 years before that. Possibly 96/97 season. As for your second question it's definitely later. I'd say around 04/05. I'm sure someone on here will know exactly.

Re: When was the first time...?
Premiership (as was) introduced them in the second season 1993/94
You’re correct that the Football league was 1999/2000

That’s spot on wilks_bfc on the squad numbers. They also wore them in the FA Cup final in 92/93.wilks_bfc wrote:Premiership (as was) introduced them in the second season 1993/94

Wasn’t it for the League Cup final? I thought they introduced it because the same teams - Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal - were in the two finals.ClaretTony wrote:That’s spot on wilks_bfc on the squad numbers. They also wore them in the FA Cup final in 92/93.

Could have been. My memory is of Chris Waddle having his name on his shirt.Foulthrow wrote:Wasn’t it for the League Cup final? I thought they introduced it because the same teams - Sheffield Wednesday and Arsenal - were in the two finals.
Re: When was the first time...?
Was it not also when Tony Adams dropped Steve Morrow when celebrating, broke his arm and finished his Arsenal career?

Re: When was the first time...?
I preferred teams coming out the tunnels separately. All this walking out together and lining up for pre match handshakes just takes any edge off the atmosphere. I want to clap/roar my team onto the field, not clap both teams, the officials and 22 kids with 'fair play' t-shirts on. Everything I loved about the game is sanitised now. I didn't attend matches as a kid to watch a grown man breakdancing in a bumble bee outfit. I went to see 2 teams go to war for 90 minutes.

Re: When was the first time...?
Thanks for the replies. Still a little cloudy re when the teams started coming out together but, as others suggest, I think this could be around 15 years ago.

Admittedly, they may be jogging informally on to the pitch coincidentally, rather than as official walking line-ups side by side.......?

Hallelujah Groove I totally agree. I have often wondered if players today need a child minders certificate to walk out these days!groove wrote:I preferred teams coming out the tunnels separately. Actually, you're dead right. I really should've started a thread on summer speculation, how crap our recruitment team is or the merits of Joe Hart. Please accept my apologies.Siddo wrote:Who on earth is interested in either of the questions?

Still prefer 1 to eleven, green keepers shirts
Outfield shirts you can put the bins out in on a crisp December night in Burnley that you will still be able to wear in forty years time....

I remember Danny Baker on 606 suggesting having the away team at Millwall run out to the Warner Brothers/Bugs Bunny cartoon theme which is a thought that tickled me at the time
