Not Tony, but Paul.

Different rules for different folk? I assume he didn't catch up on this article whilst he was looking over the form guides.

Not games he has Involvement in so I'm not sure he needs to be hounded.

Ironice that he is fined £8k but his losses on these bets was greater than that! Give it up Paul, its a mugs game.

Yep, £5K profit and a £8K fine, so only £3K down.

He bet on Valencia to beat Barcelona when the Neville brothers were in charge, Valencia lost the game 7-0.

Barton has about 10,000 bets didn’t he?

That’s a lot of games he played in

I can understand anyone having a flutter but someone with his standing you would think would have more sense.

Barton was 1,260 bets for a total of about £200,000. But only two of them in games he played in, and in both of those he backed his own side to win.

I don't think there was ever a suggestion that Barton or Scholes placed any bets with an idea of influencing the games. We aren't talking about deliberate no-balls here, or even Le Tissier's deliberate first minute throw-in. They were just illegal bets contrary to the FA's regulations and received a punishment in accordance with the players' crimes and past reputations.

Scholes should certainly have known, but the rules are very wide ranging. For example, I don't know if this one has been relaxed, but certainly a couple of years ago it was illegal for anyone who played in the FA Cup extra prelimainary round to have a bet on the final; and illegal for anyone who plays at level 8 or above to have a bet on any English football match. Yes, they want to make sure football is squeaky clean; but to the extent that Colne's substitute must be seen not to be unduly influencing Man City v Chelsea with the size of his bets?
