Break in at the Turf
Not current news this but in the summer of 1950 there was a major break in at the Turf. The Burnley Express reported as follows:
The offices of the Burnley Football Club at Turf Moor were broken into during the week-end. Among articles taken were two typewriters, curtaining, towels, tablecloths, office equipment and training kit.
It is believed that the intruders used a motor vehicle to carry away the stolen goods. To get into the office corridor under the main stand they had to force an entry.

Kudos to whoever managed to fence curtains and tablecloths around the pubs of Burnley.

Certainly no dry powder at Turf Moor 70 years ago.John Johnson 1605 wrote:They certainly left the dry powder store undisturbed.
In any case, Jimmy Mac had arrived two months earlier.

Think that the last time I saw a typewriter was about 40 years ago!

I took over as the supporters club secretary around 1984 and was given a typewriter. I soon got rid of it and replaced it with something a little bit more modern.Leisure wrote:Think that the last time I saw a typewriter was about 40 years ago!

What's going on in this country? It's going to the dogs.
It wasn't like this when we were kids. No respect these days. I blame the parents.
Et cetera.

The thieves got their timing wrong, if they'd waited until September we'd received a record fee from Everton for Harry Potts.

Reminds me of Salford Uni, two blokes stole a grand piano during classes, but because they were wearing removal coats no one thought to ask where they were taking it.

Though we were back at the old joke about a roll of carpet & display cabinet there for a min!ClaretTony wrote:Not current news this but in the summer of 1950 there was a major break in at the Turf. The Burnley Express reported as follows:

Re: Break in at the Turf
Way before Phoenix nights, don’t remember the episode, but it is probably where the idea came from. It was certainly a talking point at Granada, where I was doing something for Coronation Street at the time. I distinctly remember Mavis’s husband (name escapes me) ringing his (real) pub in London to relay the story. It was I’m guessing around 1990-91Claretmatt4 wrote:Just like the phoenix nights sketch then. Cracks me up that.
