Catch 22
Re: Catch 22
Haven't seen the new series. Didn't feel the film did the book justice. Have re-read that book more than any other and it makes me laugh out loud every time!!

Re: Catch 22
I remember reading Catch22 in summer of 1969, i cant think of any books I've chuckled at more since then. I was a bit disappointed with the film when I saw it at the time of release. I'll try and catch the new series, hope it's even half as good as the book.
As well as the book being hugely entertaining, Ive got really good memories of 1969 summer/autumn; I'd done 1st year at uni and doing a sandwich placement at ICI, Wilmslow. Shared a house in Macclesfield with several other lads in same circumstances and had a great time watching games at Burnley, Man City & Man U (saw 3 of the 5 derbies that season) and "going out with the lads" in Mac.

A bit slow, and difficult to remember who was who. I laughed at Major Major Major - a Monty Python moment!

Re: Catch 22
It's a funny book.
When I read it as an adolescent it was a comedy book.
When I re-read it as an adult it was dark and scary.
Don't know how the words changed but they somehow did.

Each to their own. I enjoyed Good Omens more than any series I've seen in years.Claret-On-A-T-Rex wrote:Started the new series last night, not bad so far and better than Good Omens.

The series also changes the context somewhat, I just watched the famous Kid Samson/McWatt scene and it's really dark, not tragicomic like in the book.Rowls wrote:It's a funny book.

Without Yossarian's inner monologue and the surreal craziness of the other characters, the series portrays him as a cowardly fool whose attempts to get out of combat just get everyone else in trouble (or dead), something I never really got from the book or the film.

Agree with Rowls and Claret-on-a-T-Rex. The mood of the series is quite sombre, but the Kid Samson/McWatt scene (saw it last night) was really dark.
You have to assume that's what the director is going for, but it doesn't have as much of the laugh-out-loud humour that the book has (for me).
Still compelling viewing, though!
