Got to be something simple but why?
Even if you take the second letters from Athletic it still leaves Arse and Accy above the other two
alphabet wise.
Somebody explain WWHHHHYYYYY.

AFC is still behind Accrington in the alphabet though?

Not if AFC is considered as 3 single separate letters. A single A comes before anything. It would be like FC United coming before Falkirk

But it´s not a single letter though, it´s part of Athletic surley?

Not really an explanation is it? Accrington

Does anybody sensible have a clear idea of why the football authorities dictate that this should be so?

But that is the explanation

AFC stands for "Association Football Club" but the "official names" of the teams are AFC Bournemouth & AFC Wimbledon.
As each letter is pronounced individually then the first "word" of their names is A, and so at top of list

Not sure whether either of them are Association or Athletic but Bournemouth are considered ahead of Arsenal alphabetically by the FA, which assumes the conside AFC to be a word, although the Premier League and most media sources ignore the AFC and place them appropriately.

What school did you go to?
A the letter comes before a word starting with A in this scenario
A.F.C therefore comes before Accy

Get some rest

Think you have spelt the last part of your name wrong matey. The A in AFC is an abbreviation not a stand alone A.

Thanks Tony, although I fail to see how AFC can in any language be termed a word.

Totally agree. Was done by Bournemouth in the 1970s simply because they wanted to be first in alphabetical order. I always refer to these clubs as Bournemouth & Wimbledon just like I don’t list us all the time as Burnley FC or, for example, Sunderland as Sunderland AFC.

Convention states that:
A.F.C. Bournemouth comes before Accrington because 'A.' or 'A(gap)' trumps 'Ac'
Similarly, for example, 'Horse Chestnut' is alphabetically before 'Horsebox' because of the 'gap'
It's just English.....!

Whether or not you consider a prefixed 'AFC' should be ignored much like the 'FC' after Burnley, is another topic entirely!

Yet Portsmouth is listed ahead of Port Vale.

Well now we are just entering the realms of inconsistency - which I can't try and explain away! But they "should" be the other way around. At least they're not in the same division!

The BBC is showing AFC Bournemouth after Arsenal and Aston Villa (and before Brighton) which suggests they are ignoring the 'AFC' - but then have Wimbledon listed first above Accy in League One......?! Go figure
