Classes

Post by basil6345789 » Fri Jun 21, 2019 7:16 pm

We seem to all be "middle class" nowadays. Those of us who used to go to work (including professionals) to earn our living were considered to be a part of the Working Classes. When did it change? "They", yes them , seem to almost scoff at Working Class people, as though they are plebs. When did it change?

Thought most people these days were working class but with different levels of income.
Invalid (sick) / Unemployed
Lower working class (don't earn enough to pay 40% tax)
Middle working class (those who do have to pay 40%)
Upper working class (those on proper good money, say 150k and above)
Middle class (millionaire who doesn't have to work if they don't want to)
Upper class (billionaire, laughs at millionaires who think they're rich :D )

The middle class grew from the merchant class... so traditionally anyone who was qualified to be a guild member was middle class.... if that helps in the slightest.

I was in class 1L. I then went to 2T, 3H and finally 4B. So it's true that you can move to different classes. I think I managed it because I grew older. Not sure how others did it.

I've only just discovered, some sixty years later, that the letter in the class was from the name of the teacher - Mr Lewis, Miss Tattersall, Mrs Hutton, and the hated Mr Bartlamb. Bartlamb said in his reports that my conduct was very good. Why then did he give me the slipper and also sent me to the head to get the cane?
