admittedly we were battling for trophies regularly and it was a lot cheaper - but that is a great photo of fans at Villa park

What you're seeing in the photo are the massed ranks of Tottenham fans on the Holte End at Villa for our first semi-final there in two years. We were allocated tickets for the smaller opposite end and although we took plenty of fans we were still outnumbered in an official attendance of 70,000.Tricky Trevor wrote:Great shot but not a Claret & Blue scarf in sight. Oddly enough we were given the same smaller end against Fulham the following year when we this time managed a draw with a gate of 59,989. A few of us on here were there for both games (Ashington & mdd2 perhaps, although not sure about CT).
Missed the replay at Filbert Street during the following week for the win that took us to Wembley for the Cup Final against Tottenham.

Correct royboy. I was there at both games and also made the replay at Filbert Street. I was lucky because the chap, Norman Hebson?, who owned our local sweet shop was a keen Claret and he used to take me to games in his Austin A40 ---luxury to me in those days!Royboyclaret wrote:What you're seeing in the photo are the massed ranks of Tottenham fans on the Holte End at Villa for our first semi-final there in two years. Strangely the replay against Fulham was played on a Monday evening. There were a number of notable absentees at Accy Grammar School on that Monday but didn't realise you were one of them, Ashington.Ashingtonclaret46 wrote:Correct royboy. That week we played Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday again, little wonder that season ended in disappointment such was the schedule we had. Nevertheless it was an amazing time to be following the Clarets as we were challenging for everything going for a few seasons.

When was segregation introduced? i'd imagine there was alot of trouble in the stands back then?Tricky Trevor wrote:Great shot but not a Claret & Blue scarf in sight. No segragation back then of course.

Absolutely zero trouble even with crowds in excess of 50,000 on the Turf.KRBFC wrote:When was segregation introduced? i'd imagine there was alot of trouble in the stands back then?
First recollection of any bother was much later in the 60's when Liverpool and Everton began to emerge as a force.

Re: Burnley can pull big crowds
Segregation didn’t really come in until the late 70s but we’d already had problems at the Turf with Everton prior to the game referenced. They were so bad that when we drew them in the FA Cup in 1961/62 a councillor advised the club to lose a replay at Leyton Orient rather than play them.KRBFC wrote:When was segregation introduced? i'd imagine there was alot of trouble in the stands back then?
My dad wouldn’t let me go on when it was Everton at home initially and when he did we always went into the enclosure.

Re: Burnley can pull big crowds
First time I saw trouble was our 6-1 win over ManU. One of theirs coming off carrying a flag on a proper pole. Woman next to us made some flippant remark and the neanderthal cracked his flagpole on her head. Me Dad sorted him. As you say it was very rare back then.Royboyclaret wrote:Absolutely zero trouble even with crowds in excess of 50,000 on the Turf.

One Everton match one of theirs was stood next to us on a beer crate, it was full. Never checked how many he supped.

Segregation came in in 1974 with the fence on the Longside.ClaretTony wrote:Segregation didn’t really come in until the late 70s but we’d already had problems at the Turf with Everton prior to the game referenced. There was trouble at TM in the early/mid-sixties, hence Bob Lord announcing the problem and his solution: the D behind both goals on the terraces, ironically a measure copied by Everton, Tony, if you read this.KRBFC wrote:When was segregation introduced? i'd imagine there was alot of trouble in the stands back then?

Re: Burnley can pull big crowds
think the 'D' was introduced after the 'semi-circle' behind the goals at Goodison ParkQuicknick wrote:There was trouble at TM in the early/mid-sixties, hence Bob Lord announcing the problem and his solution: the D behind both goals on the terraces, ironically a measure copied by Everton, Tony, if you read this.
Re: Burnley can pull big crowds
Everton fans gained a hooligan reputation from the early 1960s and the newspapers have details of the incidents. There were also recorded incidents of fans smashing up football special trains from the same time.
