Spent that game stood with a chap I’ve never met before or since. The worst 90 minutes of utter despair.... even now it in memory is comparable to losing my business or my divorce to think just how utterly without hope we were for our club even starting the next season, that night. What people forget about the Orient game is it needed the results to go for us... after Crewe it wasn’t for us to sort out. Horrific.bfcjg wrote:Crewe away 1987 lost and the last game v Orient was out of our hands. I genuinely thought that was it for us as a league team. The drive home was complete silence and despair in our minibus.

Always remember that one because I was at Uni in Salford and so drove directly to Stockport instead of travelling over to go with my dad... the one and only time I did it.ClaretTony wrote:We played them quite often on Friday nights bu the last of them was in 1990

Re: Most Memorable Matches Wrong Reasons
I was going to post Celtic - definitely a rum night that one. The 8-1 at WBA was memorable as well, didn't Astle run riot that day? Didn't we once get tubbed by 8 at QPR as well once?Royboyclaret wrote:Been more than a few over the years but I suppose the visit of Celtic in 1978 would have to top the list.
A couple of humiliating away defeats within a few months of each other, the first at Sheff Wed in May 1967 with a 0-7 defeat then in November of the same year a 1-8 defeat at West Brom. Both very difficult journeys home.

Losing at home to 9 man Rochdale.

I was stood behind the goal when the final whistle went and everyone was stunned, convinced we'd had it. Then some Crewe fans ran across the pitch and danced in front of us laughing their heads off.elwaclaret wrote:Spent that game stood with a chap I’ve never met before or since. Re: Most Memorable Matches Wrong Reasons
I remember a few of our fans trying to get the game abandoned. By the end they could have been having a disco and I wouldn’t have noticed. We were in the overspill on the left long side. I remember well one of the intruders shouting up “ on the pitch... let’s get it called off”. To which several yelled back there is nothing left to stop, we’ve already gone.Stan Tastic wrote:I was stood behind the goal when the final whistle went and everyone was stunned, convinced we'd had it. Two different games. They kept 11 on the pitch when our goalkeeper David Williams was their man of the match.colner wrote:The 9 man Rochdale team also had a goalie on loan from us i seem to recall. That 5 niller at Bburn is up there

Re: Most Memorable Matches Wrong Reasons
Was nowhere 90 minutes though. Was it around 84 when he blew the final whistle? Ref said he was concerned about our fans should it get to the end with us still behind. David Platt scores their goal that night, and not the one on Corrie.elwaclaret wrote:Spent that game stood with a chap I’ve never met before or since. Are you not getting mixed up with the keeper wearing a clarets goalkeeping top... in fact think Rochdale were one of the teams that turned out in our (old) away kits around that time, and then beat us in it?ClaretTony wrote:Two different games. Pretty much anything involving Kevin Lynch.
Where was that when Monington got sent off twice? York? Not Lynch that time.

No. David Williams was on loan to Rochdale in 1991/92 and we allowed him to play against us. They won 1-0 and he had an outstanding game. It proved to be Frank Casper’s final home game in charge.elwaclaret wrote:Are you not getting mixed up with the keeper wearing a clarets goalkeeping top... in fact think Rochdale were one of the teams that turned out in our (old) away kits around that time, and then beat us in it?

Monington was sent off in an FA Cup replay at York and four days later was sent off again against Rochdale in the next round.dougcollins wrote:Pretty much anything involving Kevin Lynch.

Chris Vinnicombe was yellow carded twice by Uriah Rennie at York in the League Cup but not sent off.

Losing 1-2 to Sunderland, when they were down to 9 men before HT.

Re: Most Memorable Matches Wrong Reasons
Saw Palace beat us with only nine men on opening day of 2003/04 season too. Add that to Sunderland and Rochdale, that's three times I've seen us lose against nine. Also drew 0-0 at Palace in 2008 against nine.Tricky Trevor wrote:Losing 1-2 to Sunderland, when they were down to 9 men before HT.
That Sunderland game was vicious. Both full backs sent off but it was Mick Docherty causing all the problems on the pitch and he got away with it. And it spilled into the directors box with Bob Lord and Jimmy Adamson all but fighting.

Re: Most Memorable Matches Wrong Reasons
They didn't need 11 men, once the 2 were rightly sent off, including Mick Doc, the ref gave them absolutely every bloody thing.Tricky Trevor wrote:Losing 1-2 to Sunderland, when they were down to 9 men before HT.

Chesterfield promotion game on the Turf
I've never seen a pitch so wet, even the puddles had puddles.

I knew Doc was captaining them, and always believed he went. If he didn't he certainly should have I can still see in my minds eye one cything tackle in front of the Longside.ClaretTony wrote:Doc wasn’t sent off though. Mick Henderson & Joe Bolton were the two sent off.

Re: Most Memorable Matches Wrong Reasons
I heard a story that Mick Doc was in The Red Lion, Fletchs Watering hole, that night saying Adamson had told them at HT to get stuck in as the ref wouldn't send any more off. If true he was right again.ClaretTony wrote:Saw Palace beat us with only nine men on opening day of 2003/04 season too.
