Ireland and England 1995.great day both sets of fans drinking together.then come the game the worst trouble i have ever seen[ second game Stockport v Burnley 1988. the two Stockport fans jumping over the big fence into the Burnley fans

Been more than a few over the years but I suppose the visit of Celtic in 1978 would have to top the list.

A couple of humiliating away defeats within a few months of each other, the first at Sheff Wed in May 1967 with a 0-7 defeat then in November of the same year a 1-8 defeat at West Brom. Both very difficult journeys home.

Crewe away 1987 lost and the last game v Orient was out of our hands. I genuinely thought that was it for us as a league team. The drive home was complete silence and despair in our minibus.

I was on the Supporters Club coach and it was the worst journey home from a football match ever. Looked all over after that. Thought we were down.

I think such events altered our and our Burnley supporing directors DNA to ensure it never happened again and some fans preach ambition borrow and gamble, the rest of us say look where that got us.

The 1974 semi cup final Against Newcastle we had the easiest of games to get there ....and blew it irrespective of who got injured. The Geordie support was incredible!!!

Definitely 1992 when the Stockport fans jumped the fence. We lost 2-1 with Stockport scoring in last minute.

I don't think the Friday night game was as early as 88, but I could be wrong.

The only reason I remember the 1992 one is because it was on my Birthday.

Two County fans ran from their end to the left of us. I think that because they saw all kids, women and older fans at the left near to them, they thought it would be easy pickings.

They jumped over the fence just to the left of our goal, and then there was a tsunami of Burnley fans who descended on them. One of them had their teeth knocked out all over the stand. Then two big jobbies joined in with their truncheons (ooh err).

The FA Cup game away at Scunthorpe 1989. We arrived just after kick off in a hired Transit van which attracted the interest of the local gendarmerie. When they looked in the back and saw it resembled a cross between a mobile off licence and a bottle bank, with the help of a Lincs police German Shepherd we were rounded up, loaded into the van and despatched back to East Lancashire. I think we were back in the Prairie not long after the final whistle and watched the draw for Italia 90 on TV.

Palace v Burnley 1982/83 both stood on the same number of points last game of the season everyone had finished their games in the league
Because of the fixture pile up as we had done so well in both domestic cups it was a rearranged fixture on a Tuesday night down in South London.
We had to win and better a two goal difference it was packed to the rafters, i think supporters from other London clubs came in support of Palace It kicked off quite a few times in our end as their ends were packed and neutrals were in their supporting rivals.
We had done well against them that season drew in the FA cup down their beat them in the replay and home in the league
They had a very good striker called Vince Hilaire the atmosphere was electric we had done well in our previous two games getting a 0-0 draw away at Champions Leicester
and winning at Shrewsbury so high hopes was in the camp sadly it wasn't to be we got a tough footballing lesson and got turned over 2-0.
The six hour journey back was very hard to do arriving back in Burnley five in the morning and straight to work on the back of just being relegated after just one season.
Exceptions was good for that season we played so well in the cups but the League was a bridge to far.

Yes, this is a good match for this thread. I thought we were awful, clueless, in such an important game.

It led to Frank Caspers dismissal, John Bond, and, well, plenty of more contenders for this thread.

Billy O'Rourke's debut in front of an atrocious Burnley defence - I'd say it's only the fourth goal for which poor Billy is culpable. He went off at the end of the game and it was left to QPR players to console him - the Burnley players just sloped off. I think it was Brian Millers first match as manager. I heard a loud bang after one of the goals went in and wondered if he'd shot himself!

Semi-final defeat by Newcastle at Hillsborough. Absolutely devastated after that loss. Joined a ship two days later that was full of Geordies

Crewe away when the trapdoor to non-league looked to be wide open. I was in shock after that one

Stockport away in 88. Got caught up in all the nonsense. My son was only a few days old and I recall the midwife giving me a talking to before putting butterfly sutures on a bad cut to my lip the following day, when she visited to check up on the baby

Everton at home last Boxing Day. Not a word was said on the drive back to Chester. We all thought our time in the Prem was up

Lashed it down all day, we played awful, lost 4-1 I think it was, did get to see the world beater that was Van Der Schafe play though!

Think it was March 78 we won 3-1 at Hull. Hitched up from Staffordshire, and after game and a few beers had hitched a ride as far as the Warrington / Irlam turnoff on the M6 south by sometime after midnight. Then torrential downpour and as I was in my usual denim jacket I was completely soaked to the skin in minutes. Squelched to a phone box up the road that smelled equally of urine, vomit, and smoke and shivered in it for about 5 hours until the storm finally passed as it got light. Took at least an hour to get a ride down the M6 to Keele from where I was able to walk a couple miles along a back road to my pad and spend the rest of the day drying myself out.

Not sure about the “easiest of games” seeing as they beat us in the Texaco cup final and got a point ont’Turf last game that stopped us getting into Europe. On the whole I’d rather we’d played the Nottm Forest team, who’d earned the gig.
