Ben Gibson
Apparently told he can leave. We are after £15m.
A strange decision but then Jimmy Dunne and Kev Long seems a good backups to Tarks and Ben Mee and its always necessary to balance the books

Re: Ben Gibson
Ben Gibson, the best player never to play for Burnley.
The weird logic here (if this is true, and I can believe it) is that no one else wants Ben Mee, as he found out last summer. Ben Gibson? Sure, lots of teams will take him. Future England player, but can't get a game at t'Turf. Strange isn't it?
Take the money, reduce the quality in the squad (Kevin Long, Jimmy Dunne vs Gibson???) and hope Ben doesn't get injured. Dry powder in tact.

I don't believe the club will sell Gibson. At least I hope they don't because it would be stupid.

Re: Ben Gibson
If we sold him we'd have to sign a replacement, otherwise we'd just be a Mee injury away from serious problems, so I'm not sure how worth it it would be.
I'd have liked to have seen us in for Matt Clarke if we had any plans of letting Gibson go but obviously that's too late.
On the flipside, if we do get that Mee injury and Gibson is still here then there's no guarantee that Mee would be first choice again.

Re: Ben Gibson
I read a rumour that Gibson ia happy to stay at Burnley and fight for his place. A couple of days later a rumour starts saying he can leave. I think the media just make up rumours to suit their narrative. 99% of the runours I've read are old ones regurgitated. The only rumour I think has any basis at present is that Hart can leave on a free and that's possibly because it suits my narrative

Who’s going to spend £15m on a player who hasn’t played in 12 months after an injury? Get him fit ready for when we sell Tarkowski and have the next one ready on the production line.

Burnley have told defender Ben Gibson that he can leave the club this summer. Premier League newcomers Aston Villa and Sheffield United are among a group of clubs interested in a £15m move for the 26-year-old Englishman. (Teamtalk)

True or not. I think its pretty clear he was brought in as we expected Mee to be off or at least not sign his deal.
We rarely sign top quality backup just in case. Not to mention at 15m.

We bought Vydra, Taylor,, Lennon, Westwood and even Tarks - all has quality back up. We had players in the team in front of these guys.
Vydra and Gibson’s prices were higher yes but that’s more because of the market.
I think one of the reasons we bought Gibson was probably because players of his quality don’t become available at his price very often - I remember them talking about a valuation of £25m plus when he broke into the England squad a year or 2 before.
I’m guessing there is rarely a single reason we buy a player and it often covers a range of scenarios - in this case possibly Mee leaving but also Tarks being sold, injuries, suspensions, playing 3 at the back, cover for left back or even midfield etc. At the end of the day he was signing a good player and I can’t recall any fans thinking this was anything else but a good signing at a good price at the time.

Tarks probably to Leicester as Maguire is off to City today for medical....
If he does hopefully we make sure his price is right (plus room in the car park for 2 more cars when the G-Wagen goes )

Is that to make sure we got Gibson in first?
Maybe the Mee contract scenario was used to help get Gibson in. He may have thought he had a stronger chance of regular premier league football with Mee's contract situation ( as reported in the media ) "up in the air"

City / Liverpool - Tarks nowhere near good enoughSteve1956 wrote:Tarks is better than Leicester ....a lot better,I'm sure he is worth a punt by one of the top six.
Spurs - nowhere near as good as 2 main centre backs and they have £40m Sanchez as cover and the young Argentinian lad too.
Chelsea - Tarks possibly at the level of Zouma - who is their 4th choice and about to be sold to Everton.
Arsenal - possible the only one of the top 6 I think Tarks could challenge for a place
United - they are rubbish I accept but they are shopping in a different market for CBs than the likes of Tarks.
Leicester are top 7 or 8 and I think with potential problems at the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and United in the next couple of years the likes of Leicester and Everton have a realistic chance of getting in the top 6.

I refuse to believe that Gibson was ambitious enough to leave Boro, where he was captain and no doubt earning a good wage to be happy to come and sit on our bench for a year.

Re: Ben Gibson
Maybe he was confident enough in his own abilities to think he could break into the team? Maybe Dyche was planning on a back three (We tried it once)? Maybe his injuries restricted his chances and when he was fully ready the form had taken an uplift and therefore he was not getting in unless there was an injury or suspension?jrgbfc wrote:I refuse to believe that Gibson was ambitious enough to leave Boro, where he was captain and no doubt earning a good wage to be happy to come and sit on our bench for a year.
It's impossible to say why he came here as an outsider to what goes on in the contract talks but one thing our players say is that they find it frustrating when they are not playing and so make damn sure they take their chances when they come along (which usually sees them retain the shirt). See Heaton and Taylor and probably others that have said as much previously.

Re: Ben Gibson
I'd say he's probably the equal of those 2. But Tarks is playing in a team that is set up to defend and always has plenty of bodies behind the ball. Also Tarkowski isn't playing for United under massive spotlight where every little mistake is highlighted. If you put Jones and Smalling in our team thwy would probably look outstanding.Spijed wrote:So you think the Man u centre halves, such as Jones or Smalling are better?

Re: Ben Gibson
Definitely not Jones but I would say Smalling possibly is. But the point about United is that none of their CBs are of the quality (or fitness in the case of a couple) for the richest club in the world.Spijed wrote:So you think the Man u centre halves, such as Jones or Smalling are better?
They will be probably looking at a much higher calibre of player than Tarks - even if they get it wrong again. If United bought Michael Keane and Tarks they would be in a better position than they are now - but there snobbish entitled fans would be outraged and prefer them to spend £200m on 2 centre backs who have never played in the Premier League than buy players from Burnley.
