San Siro to be demolished

Post by damo_whitehead » Mon Jun 24, 2019 9:50 pm

Remember visiting the San Siro some years ago and was massively impressed by the stature but felt it was in huge need of repair, so this doesn't come as a surprise. End of an era though

That’s 13 years ago Damo and was in a terrible state at the time.

With some cheap flights and cheap tickets, this might be on quite a few football fan's bucket lists now.

I was a bit gutted when Olympiakos drew them in the Group stages!

We probably wouldn’t have drawn them but it’s an iconic place and really would have been on the bucket list.

Did a tour there a few years back. Impressive but quite a dump tbh.

Very, very intimidating tunnel. Must have been some sight lining up against Gattuso, Maldini, Pirlo, Nesta and co.

Been to see both teams play there, and will be sad to see it go. Not sure I'd go as far as to say it's in a terrible state but it's been superceded, that's for certain.

The Cricketfield stand is the sort of structure to be a Grade 2 listed building for being of architectural significance in being the first and only at the time, heated football stand in the UK. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think so.

Regarding the San Siro, let if go the way of the Colosseum. It deserves to stand forever.

I went there 2 years ago and can’t remember it being bad. Perhaps it depends where you sit.

Probably had work done since we were there. Had it not done they’d have had to close it down

Went to the San Siro with my girlfriend at the time, in 1996. We saw AC Milan beat Fiorentina 3-1 to win Serie A. Fantastic experience, but even then it was starting to look tired.

Went a few years ago for the Milan derby. It’s an absolute dream of a stadium.

Only problem being that both clubs only fill it for 3 or 4 games a season. Amazing atmosphere when it is though, the whole structure shakes from the noise.

A 30m refurb was carried out the other year and it qualified as a 5 star stadium. Surprised by the news that it's being demolished after that, but it looks like I'm going to have to get a wriggle on to tick this one off.

Just out of interest, are the Milan derby tickets easy enough to get hold of?

Two possible designs for the new 60,000 stadium have been released by AC and Inter, the two options will both be developed on the current San Siro site.

Been past it a few times on business trips to Milan, and always hoped opportunity would allow me to visit sometime. One thing that always spoilt it at the time was that like much of Milan it was covered in graffiti. Loved the idea of one end homing AC and the other Inter ,with two definite clubs co existing in the same space.

Amazing ground and yes it was quite easy to get tickets for the Milan derby last year .. I just registered on the inter website and got ready for open sale.

Went in August and stated then that I'd be back. I could've had a ticket for the derby last week but unfortunately I have other things that are currently more important. Will hopefully be able to attend either this February or the following season

Plenty of time to get there. Two proposals haven't been signed off yet and they are looking at 3 years for the new build.

I was lucky enough to go to the 2001 Champions League Final there as a result of winning a workplace incentive. Bayern Munich v Valencia and had great seats on the halfway line. Decent match, great atmosphere and saw various luminaries .....Pele, Pierluigi Collina, Jamie and Harry Redknapp...but the undoubted highlight was when a bloke came out on the pitch with a fork at half time wearing a Burnley shirt.

The groundsman at that time was a Claret from Rossendale !

A bit of shame that is going even if I think it is a bit of a dump inside.
Huge, iconic stadium with a real atmosphere when it gets going.
The new one looks business-like and modern and will re-generate an area with sports complexes and facilities around it.

One day I’d like a club to rebuild the stadium with the same design but just more modern. None of them take anything from the old grounds. Wembley should have had the towers rebuilt. The new Spurs stadium should have been more like Dortmunds. The San Siro has plenty of elements to play on.

I read somewhere that one of the ends of Spurs' new ground was inspired by and based on Dortmund's "yellow wall".

Is it easy enough to get tickets for the run of the mill games? Definitely want to visit before they knock it down.

They built the on tiered end like Dortmund have. The actual design looks more like the emirates than Dortmund. I mentioned Dortmund as it’s a pretty straight/square stadium like White Hart Lane was.

The most iconic stadium of its generation. And even better in person. Love the place and will be gutted when it goes. One of main reasons i loved italian football and inter as a kid.

The atmosphere. The city. The food. None of it failed to impress.

As for tickets. Been a few times. Easy to get them. Even for sell outs.
