Need to get shifting on the next few years. Getting the opposition goalscorers is the most time consuming.

Great work Tony but on my Mac I cannot access the Tables on the Table heading and the 49/50 and 50/51 are out of sequence.
But really pleased to see this and thanks for all the effort. Was something I missed with the otherwise upgraded website after CM

Thanks for the sequence problem, will get that sorted. Not sure why you can’t see them on a Mac.mdd2 wrote:Great work Tony but on my Mac I cannot access the Tables on the Table heading and the 49/50 and 50/51 are out of sequence.

And done - now in the correct order
Re: ARTICLE: We go into the 1950s
Doug Newlands would have been on our books when that pic was taken but cannot recognise him and is that Alan Shackleton next to Mather?

Re: ARTICLE: We go into the 1950s
What I’m finding as I move on is the more names I recognise on the list of goalscorers against us. Not many yet that I’ve seen play but the likes of Mortensen & Milburn, plus such as Finney. Noticed too in the last of those seasons a Man United goal scored by Duncan Edwards.

3 or 4 unfamiliar names there, I guess must have been in the youths with Brian Miller at the time.ClaretTony wrote:Team pic btw is

The strange one is Billy Morris who I have retiring in 1952.

Off the top of my head I definitely saw Ron Flowers & Dennis Viollet play but I’m not sure I saw any of the other scorers although I’m recognising a lot of the names.Royboyclaret wrote:Some remarkable names in the list of scorers against us including Ron Flowers whose grandson was here last season for a short period?
Did spot that both Tommy Lawton & Billy Elliott scored against us.

Royboyclaret, Tony's post wasn't showing when I had put together my list, which took a while and then posted it.

Tommy Lawton must have been in his mid-30's when he scored those two goals against us.ClaretTony wrote:Off the top of my head I definitely saw Ron Flowers & Dennis Viollet play but I’m not sure I saw any of the other scorers although I’m recognising a lot of the names.

Also Sir Alf Ramsey in Sept'51.

Re: ARTICLE: We go into the 1950s
What a player Lawton must have been. Hardly got started for us before the top clubs were asking Burnley to name their price. Sold on New Years Day 1937 to Everton for £6,500 which was a massive fee at the time. Also scored in each of his first 6 internationals for England.ClaretTony wrote:I looked it - he was a month short of 35 which was some age back then to be playing top flight football
Why am I thinking Dwight McNeil?

I know football finances don't marry with inflation but £6500 then would be almost £450,000 now.Royboyclaret wrote:What a player Lawton must have been. I like to think that, in a make believe world where television didn't exist, £450,000 would still be a lot, rather than £4,500,000 or £45,000,000 becoming the norm. I'm not even that old either, but if everything had a zero less I think the game would make much more sense.

Just been poring over the league tables of the post war decade. Didn’t realise how strong Portsmouth were over that period, and very little sight of Blackburn in the first division.

Re: ARTICLE: We go into the 1950s
Portsmouth had long gone by the time I started watching Burnley but they’d been a very good side in the early post war years.Cubanclaret wrote:Just been poring over the league tables of the post war decade. When you look at the current Premier League, clubs such as Bournemouth, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Norwich, Southampton & Watford were nowhere to be seen.

Re: ARTICLE: We go into the 1950s
Just finished a good peruse of 46/47. A few thoughts.
Some of the attendances are unreal in those post war years and in Div2.
The Charlton FACup Final on 26th April with 7 league games to come.
Final league game 7th June.
The neutral venues for semis were Ewood with replay at Maine Rd.
Chesterfield 4th. What would they give for that now.
Cheers for all your hard work, CT.

Just for JohnDearyMe a bit more on Jimmy Greaves. He made his debut for Chelsea, as a 17 years old, one month prior to that Burnley game and ended that season as top scorer with 22 goals. So similar to our Willie Irvine in many respects in that it became almost inevitable he scored whenever he took to the pitch.
Incredibly in that first season his manager Ted Drake took him out of the side for six weeks from November in order to avoid the success going to his head!......Still he managed 22 goals in the limited games he played. A real one-off was Jimmy and a major thorn in our side on more than one occasion, none less than the Cup Final at Wembley in '62.
Re: ARTICLE: We go into the 1950s
I think on most occasions when it was a first for him he scored. First appearance for his clubs and England, first FA Cup game, first FA Cup final
No idea whether he achieved goals in all those firsts but definitely in an FA Cup final
