Things to do in Hamburg
Evening clarets, heading over to Hamburg for a couple of days starting tomorrow - any tips on what to do/not to?
Going to a gig in the evening and staying near Altona-Altstadt (old town?) if that helps!
Mainly interested in good bars, jovial atmosphere and abit of culture!
Cheers

Reeperbahn is good fun but seedy in places. St Pauli stadium worth a visit which is nearby. Fascinating history. Rathaus (Town Hall) area good for culture.

The actual red light window street that is all walled off and isolated is worth a walk down just cos of how weird it feels, plus theres a few great bars close by that play good music if youre into your bands and stuff

Class bars on the Reeperbahn. There’s one at the top end where the band plays on the bar, which is one of my faves.
Keep your wits about you later on though and stay away from the Eastern European girls wearing ugg boots as the vast majority are pickpockets or worse. Great night out though.
Another one of my faves is Groeningerhaus bier Keller. Got food and 5 litre barrels of fresh beer, served to your table!

The Reeperbahn is worth a trip and a few drinks.
There's also https://www.hofbraeu-wirtshaus.de/en/esplanade/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for the Bavarian beer hall experience.

There’s a big WW2 overground bunker just near the Reeperbahn- near St Paulis ground. It’s bloody massive and so strong that it couldn’t be destroyed after the war, so it’s effectively been left to rot.

Strongly recommend St Nicholas’ Church Spire. The church was bombed flat during WW2 but the spire and crypt remain. At the top it shows you what was bombed and you are quite exposed. A definite must see imo.
Re: Things to do in Hamburg
Go to the football stadium Hamburg SV, great museum with quite a bit about the Burnley match in the European cup quarter Finals.

Re: Things to do in Hamburg
Went to Hamburg for 3 days/ 4 nights last August-great city.
I would recommend one of the 'free' walking tours to get an overview of the City and a bit of it's history and the horrors it encountered during WW2.
Also catching a ferry and just going up and down the river for a bit of sightseeing rather than a boat trip, only costs a few euros as it's public transport and you can stay on as long as you like and take your own food/drink on if you want.
St.Paulistrandbar overlooking the river is a cool place for a drink and a spot of sunbathing if the weathers good and it's not far from the U-Boat museum which is also worth a look.
Reeperbahn as has been mentioned and Beatles platz.
The Old Elbe tunnel which runs under the river is interesting and a terrific feat of engineering.
St Michaels church bell tower for the views
Warehouse district which is a Unesco Heritage site
Just a few of the things that spring to mind but there's loads to see and do!

Re: Things to do in Hamburg
Great city to visit. Cathedral trip a must. There is also an old Russian sub in the docks which you can look over if that’s your sort part of thing. The fan bar near St.Paulis ground is worth a look. Get a multi ticket for buses and underground to move around it will save you lots of money and time.
