Japan v Holland

IMO the Dutch penalty is a good example of the punishment not fitting the crime. How the hell was the Japanese defender supposed to get her arm out of the way. It wasn't deliberate which I thought it had to be but the pundits agreed it was a penalty.

Get used to it because this is modern football ---don't forget that she was cautioned for the non-deliberate handball too. You have to remember that her arms were in an unnatural position too ---they were on the end of her arms which were hanging from her shoulders ---just not natural.

Very harsh decision in my opinion - no chance of getting out of the way at such close quarters.

Apparently there has been a rule change basically saying if it hits your arm it’s handball and it doesn’t matter if it’s deliberate or not. Why? Who knows. Lots of crazy things have come into the football of late and this is just one of many.
These new rules being implemented from this summer that no one asked for and no one thought to test is ruining the game. VAR isn’t helping at all as well. Annoying seeing a sport you love being destroyed by men in suits who I don’t think have ever watched a football game.

I dodn't see this particular incident, but a lot of penalty handball incidents suffer from slow motion replays. Certainly many commentators, and I suspect more than a few referees, don't realise that just because slow motion shows the ball taking a second to travel two feet, doesn't mean that the player has a second to decide what to do.

The worst example of commentator idiocy is when they see a ball blasted from close range and say "he moved his hand towards the ball". They don't realise that a moving player does not have motionless arms when the rest of him is moving; his arms are moving one way or the other, and if they happen to be going ion the same direction as someone else hits the ball, it is not proof that they handled it on purpose.

Regardless of the stupid grey area ruling of hand to ball or ball to hand, I'm for giving penalties for shots on target which hit the arm/hand (with common sense used for certain situations).

You hardly ever see a player deliberately use their arm/hand to stop the ball.

The ridiculous part was and is, giving out a yellow card for it.

"Players are now essentially being punished before the ball has even been struck for moving like a normal human and not in fact, a pencil."

Stupid rule that lack understanding of how people move. I can see us falling foul of this a few times as we're a big proponent of the low block and other such moves which often sees the arms move to counterbalance the lower body. Refs will be chomping at the bit to use this comfort blanket.

Agree. If you gain an advantage, intentional or not, then it should be a pen. This shot was goal bound (if I remember rightly) and would've gone in of not hitting her arm. Her arm was outstretched as well, which isn't unnatural when you turn your back quickly, but nevertheless she gained an advantage.

That's not what the rule states though, it needs rewriting or clarifying.

Going to be penalty central next season.

This is where we are, having arms is gaining an advantage.

My money is on Puma bringing out the first “sleeveless” top

I know they’ve done a version before with Cameroon with their vest shirt but I mean one with no arm holes, just a tube of material so tight it pins arms to side

Players will have to train to be subbuteo figures the way the game is going.
