Personally quite enjoyed Stormzy. I saw a few tracks of George Ezra before and I know which show I’d rather watch.

Re: Glastonbury 2019
Spent a lot of time in Shepton Mallet as my uncle lived there for a long time and my cousins were brought up there. It has a lovely park (Collett Park)..and...ermmm..not much else. One of the dullest places on Earth. Sorry..forgot The Bell pub in the centre. Sells proper Cider/Scrumpy (the bright orange misty looking stuff) on draught..and all the locals drink it. Same effect as hallucinogenic drugsRick_Muller wrote:Why is it called “Glastonbury” when it’s closer to Shepton Mallet...?
I suppose “Shepton Mallet Music Festival” doesn’t sound right...
Been past the festival site many times and you wouldnt think a festival the size of Glastonbury happens there. Never been to the festival myself.

Re: Glastonbury 2019
Never seen such an acute display of "old man yelling at cloud" as witnessed on this thread tonight.
Anyway, dinosaurs aside; grime, and rap in general, isn't typically conducive to a festival environment, least of all one drowning in white guilt such as Glasto, but despite the circumstances I thought Stormzy was excellent. He isn't being 'pushed', either, for the benefit of the bores on this thread. He was one of the legitimate standout performers in 2017 (playing his set in the middle of the afternoon, no less), and made his name as an artist independently.

Some odd comments on this thread. Yes I know it’s about opinions... even so. Steve1956 I looked at all your posts from 26 onwards - did you think you were in a competition to be the most dismissive of, and insulting towards Stormzy..?
Can I suggest that he is not necessarily aiming his show or his musical output generally to half-p1ssed 60 year old Burnley blokes sat down somewhere in Scotland shouting at their telly. It’s clear who his intended real audience is, there were thousands of them and they were loving it. I’m not one of his targets either but he did a great job in my opinion. It was a varied, interesting and very well received headline set...( oh yeah.. the very unsuccessful and untalented Chris Martin gets it as well). Music moves on, it evolves constantly and an open mind and a willingness to embrace changing tastes is essential if anyone is to get the best value for themselves from it. Maybe much of Glastonbury isn’t for you? Back to Stormzy briefly - I saw him on G. Norton programme, BBC breakfast TV and I heard him on the radio this week as well - what a nice bloke, very modest and making good progress in a business that is often nasty and cut-throat. Fair play to him... his life at times has not been easy. His approach to life and what he is doing, I find very refreshing.

This thread is great, especially when the Permanently Angry at Something brigade log-on to post. You think they were still living in the days when there was only three channels on TV. Mind you, some of them do seem to live in a rose-tinted past, so maybe they really have TV sets that only receive three channels - all three of them tuned into stuff they really hate.

Snook in without a ticket on 1995 with my mates. Didn’t want to see The Cure but my mates convinced me to watch them and loved their set. I’d put it down as a pleasant surprise! This year’s line up has been pretty ropey so far. George Arze, Stormzy in a teacup and Too Dour Cinema Crap being the worst ones yet.wickdkewlclaret wrote:There’s tons I’d go and see, I think it’s a decent line up!

Re: Glastonbury 2019
Looking forward to that. One of the best live bands I’ve seen ( was a while ago though). To be fair there’s a huge array of talent ( Stormzy ??) and styles so there is something for most tastes. I accept people might not like what I like though unlike Eddie. Good weather for sandals down at Glastonbury. Eddie can get down their and do his rapping thing.wickdkewlclaret wrote:There’s tons I’d go and see, I think it’s a decent line up!

The duet with Chris Martin though - showed that singing is not his talent. If two blokes were singing like that at a karaoke they’d be booed off. At Glastonbury, it’s appreciated as if it’s the second coming.
He does come across as a humble bloke and good luck to him. I’m not sure we’re on the cusp of a new sound here but it’s certainly getting popular. It’ll be interesting to see how this type of underground music copes as it becomes more mainstream.

Gives you hope if someone like Stormzy is making music we don't get. We're not supposed to, our parents no doubt ridiculed 'shed banging' music in the early 90s but it didn't seem to stop dance music becoming what it is. I'd rather 'the kids' were listening to something we're supposed to hate than another safe, well marketed drone churning out the soundtrack to the next John Lewis advert.
I wouldn't listen to it all day on Spotify but it was a pretty good show and entertained me for half an hour.

Well speaking from a pure musical point of view, a distinct lack of harmony or melodic lines, just a bloke rapping over a beat made in about 5 minutes on a Roland drum machine, often making up words to 'rhyme'.Rileybobs wrote:There are exactly two ways about it. OK Stormzy may have some valid criticisms of the regime, however his new figure of some sort of voice of all things righteous seems a bit bizarre seeing how a lot of his lyrics contain lines that promote violence & other degenerative things - see this link https://genius.com/Stormzy-mr-skeng-lyrics" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for an example

Musical tastes vary hugely (you only have to look at any previous music-related thread on here). I'm not into Stormzy in the least but I've never liked opera either or warbly pop ballads; doesnt stop that music giving pleasure to many others.
Undoubtedly, some of the music that hits the spot for me will be considered not worth listening to by many others. À Chacun Son Goût,.
