help with old photo
I've got this old picture from the 1960's, Think it maybe West Ham v Burnley FA cup 1964 but there is no details on the back. Can anyone help identify the player heading the ball. ? I'm thinking John Connelly? Thanks in Advance.

Not sure about the goal scorer, but the guy 11 in from the right and 4 rows from the back is my dad’s twin brothers mothers sons best mate...

Ken Brown in the middle, so West Ham, but are you sure it’s against us?
Don’t recognise either of the players in white and don't remember us with the solid claret cuffs on the shirt. I was very young back then though.

I don't think it's a WHU v Burnley game. The second player in White doesn't resemble any our players.

Re: help with old photo
Great action pic, but nothing to do with Burnley.
We did play at Upton Park in the 6th Round of the FA Cup in 1964 and lost 2-3. Our team was Blacklaw, Angus, Elder, O'Neil, Talbut, Miller, Morgan, Pointer, Lochhead, Harris, Connelly. Our scorers were Connelly & Pointer. 99% certain we played in Claret and Blue that day as in the Cup at that time the home team changed strip.
My guess would be the season is correct at 1963/64, but it's a league game between West Ham and Liverpool with the player heading the ball Alf Arrowsmith.

I remember that 64 FA Cup Quarter Final game at Upton Park, Johnny Byrne fouled Brian Miller for one of their goals the cheat.

Re: help with old photo
It's definitely not West Ham v Burnley. Burnley were 1-0 up at half-time before losing 3-2, and the West Ham goal on the link is at the same end as the goal shown here; but Connelly's goal is described as "Connelly snapped up a quick pass to whizz past three West Ham tackles ..." so not a header.
Though Burnley did play in white with dark shorts.
And the second half goal was scored by Pointer. So unless he dyed his hair for the occasion ...

Re: help with old photo
The player in white who is almost totally obscured looks a little like Arthur Bellamy to me.
Re: help with old photo
Though come to think of it, that picture doesn't say it was a goal ...dsr wrote:It's definitely not West Ham v Burnley. Re: help with old photo
The horse looks a bit like dark warrior, one of the early winners of the Lincolnshire handicap, but I don't think it can be as west ham were only using donkeys in 63/4.

Next to the giraffe is that the Knight who had his arms and legs chopped off in Monty Pythons Holy Grail?

Yes he didn’t play, although mainly because it’s West Ham v Liverpool.dsr wrote:Though come to think of it, that picture doesn't say it was a goal ...

I actually think that it West Ham v Leyton Orient in an earlier round of the cup.Orient just wore red socks for the replay which west ham won 3.0
Re: help with old photo
Thanks for your help with this one, I'm pretty sure it's not Liverpool, so maybe the Orient one is a good call.

It absolutely is Liverpool and it is Alf Arrowsmith.Beehole67 wrote:Thanks for your help with this one, I'm pretty sure it's not Liverpool, so maybe the Orient one is a good call.

Re: help with old photo
I'd only seen the pic on my phone when I made the comment about the hair looking like Connelly but just seen it again and it doesn't look like him.
Note sure why Roy thought we'd have played in claret & blue. Occasionally home teams did change in the FA Cup (usually both teams would change if no agreement as per Burnley v Everton in 1962 and Burnley v Wrexham in 1974), but if the teams agreed then the home team would play in their home kit as was the case here.
Although it doesn't answer the OP's question, I have found a pic from that cup tie in 1964 at the Boleyn.

Fair enough Martin!! You have the evidence!
By the way it wasn’t a goal as West Ham won 1.0

Not sure why I thought we played in our home strip that day. I was there for the game and remember the disappointment of scoring twice and losing the game.ClaretTony wrote:I'm aware, I stuck the picture up to show that we hadn't played in claret and blue.
The first time I think I'd seen both sides change was some six years earlier in an FA Cup replay against Villa.
