Burnley's second best ever player?
It goes without saying that Jimmy McIroy owns the top spot in perpetuity.
But who comes in at number 2?
Brian O'Neill? Never saw him myself but heard good things

Older fans would say Jimmy McIlroy to that question. My granddad said that Bob Kelly was by far our best ever player.

Difficult, but I would just about go for Brian O'Neil, with apologies to Connelly, Adamson, Morgan, James, Pointer and Nick Pickering.

Willie Irvine didn't do too badly for us.

Re: Burnley's second best ever player?
Tough one to answer as I doubt anyone on here saw Bob Kelly play. However my Dad always said that Kelly and Jimmy Mac were our two best players so that's good enough for me.
I saw plenty of Jimmy Mac and if Kelly was anywhere near as good he must have been one hell of a player. Incredibly just a couple of weeks ago Bob Kelly was a pointless answer on the BBC programme Pointless when the presenter did not appear to know he even played and starred for Burnley.
Since Mac the best player I've seen in a Burnley shirt is Steven Defour.

Re: Burnley's second best ever player?
It was a pictorial question with 5 players including Bob Kelly and also from memory Ian Wright. The question was to name the oldest player to have scored for England in an international match.djemba-djemba wrote:What was the question?
Wright was obviously a high scorer but our man Kelly was a pointless answer.

Technically I’d say Defour from my time watching.
Apart from Les Thompson obviously.

Re: Burnley's second best ever player?
Just checked and Bob Kelly was almost 35 years old when he scored for England against Scotland at Wembley in March 1928. Of course he was no longer a Burnley player at that time.djemba-djemba wrote:What was the question?

Re: Burnley's second best ever player?
all the real legends were before my time, I don't think I could decide who the best Burnley player I've seen is never mind the second. It's difficult to judge given the depths we sunk too !!
CT, it would be interesting if you did one of your polls with players of a particular decade then do an ultimate top 5 for example

Some of you have very short memories. I remember watching burnley in 1921 Best Burnley team ever.. Only Jimmy Mac would get into that team.

I agree with Jimmy Mac Number1 but for number 2 it's close between Willie Morgan, Trvevor Steven and Lee Dixon. Lets face it it's a matter of opinion as we have had so many great players.

No surprise to see many references to Brian O'Neil on this thread. A very popular Claret was the pocket dynamo.
