SAINTS CLOSE ON ADAMS
Southampton are close to agreeing a deal with Birmingham for striker Che Adams, Sky Sports News understands.
Talks have progressed since an initial bid was turned down a month ago and the clubs are discussing a fee in the region of £15m.
Adams is expected to travel to the south coast for a medical and talks over personal terms in the next 24 hours.
Strange we wanted him 5 months ago but no mention of any counter bids anywhere or does that mean the Jay deal is about to be done or have we moved on ?

Oh bugger, I was hoping we'd push the purse strings for this lad, I really do think we'll regret it. That's two of my targets gone then.

If it means we can spend it in central midfield instead, then it won't be too bad.

We must bring in both a striker and a central midfielder. The latter must start. A anything less would be ridiculous.

What's ridiculous is suggesting that Barnes and Wood aren't good enough to go for another season. They've shown they clearly are.summitclaret wrote:We must bring in both a striker and a central midfielder. The latter must start. A anything less would be ridiculous.

I can only speak for myself but Wood and Barnes did well last season as a partnership it's certainly not an emmergncy they one of them is replaced.

Bhf who said that? People get injured/suspended/lose form. Do you think it is acceptable for any professional team to have just 3 strikers let alone one with a £100m plus revenue budget?

Maybe not but if Southampton are,nt on the list of clubs we must try and stay above to survive then lets hope Villa, Norwich, Sheff Utd and Brighton (of which all 4 teams have already strengthened) all struggle !!!!!!! mind you we are not in europe this time so we dont need to strenghten we will be ok.

With or without Che Adams we've still got more than enough to beat them on the opening day of the season.s6t9a2f3f wrote:Maybe not but if Southampton are,nt on the list of clubs we must try and stay above to survive then lets hope Villa, Norwich, Sheff Utd and Brighton (of which all 4 teams have already strengthened) all struggle !!!!!!! mind you we are not in europe this time so we dont need to strenghten we will be ok.

Unfortunately, we can never compete against Southampton for a player either in terms of the money we can offer club and player or in relation to a player's perception of club standing.

When you're talking about athletes, their shelf lives are much shorter than other professions and their performance is much less consistent.

Southampton are likely to start the season with the 3 strikers from last season who struggled to find the net and a new lad who's completely unproven in the PL.s6t9a2f3f wrote:Maybe not but if Southampton are,nt on the list of clubs we must try and stay above to survive then lets hope Villa, Norwich, Sheff Utd and Brighton (of which all 4 teams have already strengthened) all struggle !!!!!!! mind you we are not in europe this time so we dont need to strenghten we will be ok.

There's no Ward and no Vokes and you can probably forget Defour. So I'll give you a clue - there are big gaps in our squad. We have too many keepers as well and we are possibly going to loose Tarks. Good idea let's not sign anybody.

Not having a go at you here but in general can people please stop using loose when they mean lose.summitclaret wrote:There's no Ward and no Vokes and you can probably forget Defour. And it's quite realistic for the club to hang on tight with regards to improving the defence until we definitely do lose Tarky. Possibly losing Tarky won't cut it at board level. They will want to know for sure.

But summit, by losing Ward and Vokes why are we worse off ? Defour could be back and Tarks is definatly not loose.summitclaret wrote:There's no Ward and no Vokes and you can probably forget Defour. If the player doesn't want to come to Burnley, it's not the fault of anyone at Burnley, it's just someone's perception of the green grass outside of Birmingham.

Re: Che Adams on way according to sky
Whilst there is no doubt we COULD afford that fee, there is a massive doubt we WOULD pay it. Not a fact, but a complaint. What was the rumoured offer we apparently submitted for Adams earlier this year? Whilst I generally support the way we do business, sometimes the fact that we won’t pay the going rate for a player can be frustrating, especially when the amount we are talking about would seem fair in the current climate. We value a player at a certain amount, everyone else in the whole world values them differently, and we don’t/won’t play that game.JohnDearyMe wrote:We weren't able to compete with Southampton on the wage package they were offering. As far as wages are concerned, I doubt there’s a club in the PL we could compete with. Not a complaint, but (probably) a fact.

I remember watching a sky match featuring Birmingham and the commentator saying - "Adams would get his big money in the summer but sorry Burnley not you".
I presume he had some inside knowledge - if he really wanted us he would have kicked up a fuss in January.

Re: Che Adams on way to Southampton according to sky
My guess would be that Adams never really wanted to join Burnley and was holding out for a move to Southampton.
They are a bigger club than us in almost every respect and I think under their new manager with his first full season they are going to back him in the transfer market. They need a bit of a clear out with the likes of Austin and a few others holding him back in terms of wage bill but I don’t think they would have managed to secure a manager with his pedigree without promising to back him.
Taking all this into account we are never really going to compete with the likes of Southampton.
There are teams we can compete against though in this league for different reasons - Brighton, Bournemouth, Norwich, Villa (possibly), Sheff Utd.

Says we can't really compete with Saints, but possibly Villa who've got rich owners and could blow us out of the water with wages ....
Same for Brighton, Bournemouth and depending on what happens in court, Sheff UTD.

Other reasons we can compete with these - our manager, stability, the way we develop players etc.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote:Says we can't really compete with Saints, but possibly Villa who've got rich owners and could blow us out of the water with wages ....

Plus these teams will have players on similar wages to ours - they may have the odd player on £80k a week but for the majority they will be in that £40k to £60k bracket which is a wage that we can and do pay.
As for Sheff Utd and Norwich I doubt they have many players earning more than £25k a week - as we stand now there is no reason why we can’t compete against these teams. Haven’t Norwich already set a transfer spend cap of £20m for this season ?
Let’s not forget what we have already got too - the 3 promoted teams would have to spend a hell of a lot more money than they will be doing to have players like Tarks, Mee, Pope, Heaton, McNeil etc
As wealthy as the likes of Bournemouth and Brighton may be neither of them have been better than Burnley over the last 3 or 4 seasons

Over 3-4 seasons we've only had one standout season, when we qualified for the Europa League.
Bournemouth have been consistently steady by comparison.
Brighton not so much so I'd agree they haven't been better but financially they can and will demolish us.

SAINTS SIGN ADAMS
Southampton have completed the signing of striker Che Adams from Birmingham City on a five-year deal.
Talks had progressed well since a Saints bid was turned down in late May and the clubs have now agreed a deal which Sky Sports News understands to be in the region of £15m.
Sheffield United are understood to be in line for around £3m as part of the 20 per cent sell-on clause they negotiated when Adams moved to Birmingham in 2016.
