Remember it well.
It was bloody criminal to surrender that lead.

Ditto.
Can't believe we didn't win that game!
Good to watch, though.

Incidentally, that was the last time I said 'Hello' to the guy from Dover who used to rarely miss a game.
Saw him on Piccadilly Station. God knows what time next day he'd have got home.

Anyone know if he's still watching us?
Was he called Dave?

Awful night, heavens opened and as per usual Ronnie Jepson scored against us. That was a silent car journey home, no one spoke. Convinced we were going back to the bottom division.

Yes, it was one of my lowest moments as a claret supporter. It wasn't that the situation was as desperate as in the lead up to the Orient game, but that we had had a horrible season, and had just about turned it round. Then we go and totally bottle this game, basically allowing ourselves to be bullied by Jepson. Like the majority, I thought that we would be relegated the following week.

It was Nigel Blackburn. Not sure where he is now.

That's right.
Nigel.
Bumped into him a few times. Once at a London game too.
He'd usually arrive back in Dover sometime next day, depending on which 'milk' train he could catch.
Real dedication.

I think he worked for what was then Customs and Excise in Dover. He seemed a really nice lad.

Like a lot of Burnley fans we decided to go last minute. I remember the decision spontaneously being made while we were having tea.

3-1 up and the rain clouds came rolling in. I remember thinking that’ll it be our luck that the game would get abandoned...

At 3-3 it was a basically a thunderstorm and I was praying for the ref to abandon it.

How many teams did Jepson score for against us?

Oldham
Bury
Exeter City
Preston?
Huddersfield?

A better link, slightly longer and showing the fans moving stands.
Made the hairs stand up on my neck, hurry up football season!

3-1 against 10 men and blew it.

Was gutted coming off but was confident leading up to the Saturday game.

I remember Oldham celebrating like they’d won the league when they equalised. Some bloke dragging this big flag across over at the other end.

I also have a memory of Grobbelaar being in goal for Oldham and Clarets fans offering him a tenner to let one in. It was around the time when he was accused of match fixing.

I also thought we were doomed after that. Didn’t we need someone else to lose as well as beating Plymouth?

Bristol Rovers to beat Gillingham was it?
Or Brentford perhaps?

More than he scored against for us that’s for sure.

Although met him once and he’s a great chap. Bought me a pint for recognising him. Wouldn’t let me get him one

I don't think I've ever been to a game at that level with two older goalkeepers

Oldham: Grobbelaar - 40
Burnley: Woods - 38

I remember going to Bury in 96 with one of my mates and when we got in the ground and bought a programme, my comment was 'if Bury get one, you can guarantee it will be Jepson. He always scores against us.'

Bury 1-0 Burnley scorer Ronnie Jepson.

I felt like sh1t after that game. I’d really felt the gamut of emotions over the 90+ minutes. Pride at our amazing turn out; amazement at just how well we were playing; and a shame making horror at blowing the lead to ten men.
I got back home that evening and set the video to tape Soccer Night, which was promising extended highlights of the game, and then went to bed.
When I got up the next day, I found I just couldn’t bear to bring myself to watch it. I was so convinced that we’d completely blown it and we’re going to get relegated the following weekend. I didn’t watch the highlights until after the Plymouth match, when we were safe.
They are now some of my favourite ever highlights.

Was this game the one before the Plymouth game? I was living in West London and drove up on the morning of the game. Passed a few Plymouth coaches so took the opportunity to fly a claret and blue scarf out of the sunroof. They didn't seem too happy to see me and even less so at the final whistle. I was in the BL stand for this game and somehow ended up on the pitch at the final whistle...
