Another Gibson loan bid knocked back

Post by ksrclaret » Mon Jul 01, 2019 5:12 pm

Schalke this time, according to Sky.

Wonder if he'll have a (substantial) role to play this season

he had a substantial role last season, it's just Tarks and Mee didn't get injured or suspended for any length of time to need him

It looks as though David Wagner is trying to build a young team at Schalke with some decent young signings and loans.
Interesting that he has been after Gibson because he has just splashed out a fair sum for a 19 year old centre back from Stuttgart and he has also got another one back who had been on loan in La Liga.

Substantial - of considerable worth or importance.

It's up for debate of course, but I wouldn't call playing a back up role to be considerably substantial.

Hmm do we think Gibson is asking his agent to put some feelers out and invite a bit of interest?

Undoubtedly. He can’t be happy with having hardly played in a year and is probably wondering how he will displace Mee.

Wasn't it the same with Tarkowski not getting a game and having to be patient with Keane and Mee our chosen centre backs

But Tarkowski only got in because Keane then left.

If Tarkowski doesn’t leave, then Gibson won’t play as a regular, because Dyche doesn’t drop players, even after half a season of conceding like a Coyle side.

And even if Tarkowski does leave, there are a plenty of folk who can’t imagine a Gibson Mee pairing.

But it was pretty obvious that Keane was going to be leaving us. Hard to see how Gibson is going to get a chance tbh unless Ben Mee gets injured. I don't want to reopen the whole can 2 left sided defenders play together argument but I just don't see Dyche fancying Mee and Gibson together somehow.

All I’ll say in answer to that is “where would we have ended up with an injury to Mee or Tarks, or worse - both?

Your reply implies that I’ve criticised the signing of Gibson. I haven’t, I’m delighted we’ve got him.

I was simply wondering if he’ll play a more substantial role this season, i.e. will he start games, or will he remain as a back up. Personally I think he’s too good for the latter, so it will be interesting to see how things unfold.

Would like us to see us play a 3-5-2 with wing backs but I know this won't happen, a back three of Mee, Tarks and Gibson would be solid. Unlikely I know

If he couldn't dislodge Ben Mee before Christmas last season then he never will because Mee was woeful

We may be looking at having the option to switch formations about next season, all three can play out. I don’t get the impression Gibson doesn’t get what SD’s about and is buying into the idea. His time in the shop window will come sooner or later in an established Premier League Club, as he expected from Boro

Do you mean when he was undergoing two operations for his hernia injury?

Well Gibson certainly played on Boxing Day.

I think it was at that point Dyche had a decision to make, and he chose Mee. And to be fair Mee responded and was mostly very good in the second half of the season.

But that’s not really the point. The point is Mee was not dropped even after performing well below par for half a season. So it’s reasonable to ask, what will it take for Gibson to dislodge him. A long term injury maybe, but beyond that we’re struggling. So it’s reasonable to ask the second question, will Gibson be happy to remain at Burnley as a back up player.

Mee (likely, can't say for sure) wasn't dropped because his replacement was having hernia ops. The only viable alternative at that time was Long.

No, I’ve just established that is not correct above.

Gibson was fit and available from around mid-December I think, so much so he started a game on Boxing Day. It was at that point Dyche chose to stick rather than twist.

I don’t remember too many covering themselves in glory on Boxing Day, and that proved his main chance, luckily for us it proved rock bottom for the team and form improved...

Nothing suspicious and his chance will come.

He might have done had he been fit but he had surgery twice during the first half of the season.

Are we having that conversation again where some folk think that we shouldn't have decent players on the bench?

It’s a bit like the “who’s going to be dropped” every time we make a signing

Or assuming Kevin Long fits that bill

Aye, or trying to crowbar them in with a change of formation and/or players playing in different positions.

No worries, posting on the wrong thread is an easy mistake to make.

Well I've never done it, but I imagine it's easily done if you're not paying attention.

A new release. Overpriced. Underused and smashes easily. Good at keeping your pocket warm.

I think the key decision SD had after that day was Hart or Heaton.
