I think G would have been hoping that the team could have ridden at a higher pace to leave them weaker when he attacked. Ineos have been really poor by their usual high standards.

It’s been a good race though.

It’s strange everybody is loving it but I’ve been generally disappointed. The break aways have been allowed to go and the major players are all keeping their powder dry. I’d like more action from Ineos, FDJ & Jumbo to really open it up and let the cream rise to the top.
It’s probably because I concentrate on the yellow jersey battle and have no interest in the other jerseys.

I think people have enjoyed the openness - who would have predicted JA to still be in yellow? I think the fireworks you have been waiting for will come tomorrow and Saturday.

I haven’t been able to watch much of it live for years but i’m in a job now where they are fairly relaxed and I can have it on at work. I have found it fascinating watching the battle for the break to get away, today being a prime example. It’s not something you get to see on highlights or when the live coverage only kicks in halfway through the race.

Ineos to attack hard tomorrow and drop JA with Thomas having a burst at the finish to put him ahead of Bernal. Then with JA out of Yellow Ineos will just look to control the last day with Thomas 1st and Bernal 2nd

Thats my prediction for next two days anyhow

I’m not sure Ineos have the firepower in this race to do that.

On another note, I’m getting a bit irritated by cyclists describing everything as super-strong/super-happy/super-confident/super-anything. Super-annoying.

I can see Thomas going in full TT mode at the top of tomorrow's climb if he is in the mix - it is a relatively level 2km plateau - it is his only chance probably.

Still think Movistar will push it hard from the off though and it may start go nuts on the climb before just to get at the legs of Alaphillipe - which suits Ineos as well

If Thomas does it....
Wouldn't happen, too many teams want the sprint and would reel it in.

Yes, I know it won’t happen. Just being flippant about what might be regarded as acceptable if it resulted in a French winner.

So excited I could pee myself. Leaving work early to cheer on the little Columbian. Pays for my summer holiday if he comes in.

wow, freak blizzard ahead and roads blocked!!!

it was already a brilliant stage today and now neutralised and a change in race leadership. Lots of unhappy riders as you'd guess particularly Alaphililipe.

I would add Thomas to that - his chance has now gone I think - Ineos in for the youngest winner in eons

I'd say 8 would be fair enough as that bit was completed - there is bound to be precedent on whether or not the finish bonus is awarded also

big mudslide in the middle of that hail/snow

looks too deep for peddling through though you could imagine Sagan bunny-hopping onto the barriers and riding that to the other side

What a disappointment - was shaping up to be a fantastic finale on the last climb with the chasing group then Alaphilippe behind.

Makes tomorrow interesting. I wonder if JA will try one last crack at winning and try to get in the break. Will certainly make for a lively opening if he does. Surely though he’ll just try to defend his podium. I expect Thomas will get the time back on him and Ineos will have the top two places unless Bernal is really attacked and he has to burn himself out on domestique duty.

Tomorrow's stage has been cut to 59km with 71km removed due to the threat of landslides amid severe weather warnings, It finishes with the 33km climb up Val Thorens

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/49134648" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

it is likely to be a mad dash of a race and the fastest ever ascent - that pace could yet rip a few things up - or for a road captain like Luke Rowe or Tony Martins to make sense of it all.

only in the sense he knows how long he has to hold on - much greater chance of keeping his podium though - it is effectively a time trial on that mountain now and while long not overtly steep - for these guys at least

Gutted best race in donkeys and weather today and tomorrow has ruined it. I reckon Kruijswijk and Buchanan would have attacked the final climb and pulled them and Thomas closer to Bernal setting up a great final day with all 4 of them still in the mix

Bernal has been superb the last two days but it’s very hard to do three successive hard mountain stages. This reduced day has set him up for it and good luck to him Thomas has looked good but not good enough.

It could still go that way - there will be very few left by the time they are half-way up - possibly just a handful - the nutrition both in prep and through the ride is going to have to be carefully managed as the power outputs will be much higher than a normal days ride - could be an absolute monster
