I'm an Influencer - can I have stuff for free?

Post by Billy Balfour » Thu Jul 04, 2019 10:03 am

Got to love this guy - he's told the freeloaders to 'do one'.

'We're anti-influencer': ice-cream truck makes Instagram 'stars' pay double

CVT Soft Serve, a popular truck in Los Angeles, has started to receive weekly requests from self-proclaimed Instagram “influencers” who promise to post a photo of Nicchi’s ice-cream – if they don’t have to pay. Nicchi has always said no, but this week he found an unusual way to profit off of the influencers: he publicly told them to go away.

Nicchi went viral after posting a sign that said “influencers pay double”, writing on Instagram that he would “never give you a free ice-cream in exchange for a post”. The image, tagged #InfluencersAreGross, spread around the globe, and now Nicchi says his business is booming, attracting fans across southern California who share his disdain of influencers.

Brilliant that these people have been given a title: “influencers”.

Basically they’re just electronic sandwich boards.

Fair play though, they’ve found a way of making money by doing **** all which is what we’d all love to do.

He's playing at it compared to the White Moose cafe.

Fair enough, but I don't think I could lower myself to scrounge free stuff from small traders - like an ice cream van. They try it on with none-chain restaurants too. Trying to get a free evening meal in exchange for a photo on Instagram. I'm glad this guy has told them where to go.

BBC, Channel 4, Sky etc do it daily for their **** reality show. "Hi we'd love to film a VT for our cooking/singing/travel show, we can't pay you but it'll be great exposure for your business".

But because it's young people on a platform we don't quite get lets get all outraged and self righteous at these 'freeloaders'.

Spot on. It actually creates a lot of effort to build up a social media following large enough to make money from it and you need to have a good understanding of social media.

Nothing to do with your presumptions. I work in IT and I'm hardly an old codger and I certainly don't sneer or become outraged at those younger than myself.

Thing is, it's freeloading if you're going to go up to an ice cream van and ask for a freebie because you're an 'influencer'. If you're going to try that trick with self-employed people - then it's more to do with self-entitlement mentality than social media marketing.

Yup. It's a business at the end of the day.

I gave the article a quick read (although not sure why the OP has shortened it - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... nfluencers" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and it seems that the chap didn't understand how it all worked, neither did he try and work out whether the 'deal' was worthwhile. Had he agreed to some people and his orders increased, then it would be beneficial for both him and the 'influencer'.

It looks like he's reacted to something that he doesn't understand but it's worked out well for him in the end.

Copyright. It's fine to post a section of an article, however, posting verbatim can cause problems for websites/forums and I always err on the side of caution and provide a link.

You only added a snippet of the article and you've linked to the source, so it's fine with a naked link.

It's ok, Frank. No need to explain yourself. It's a football forum, not the debating chamber at the UN. Take it easy.

So everyone who wants an ice cream simply asks the guy for one in exchange for posting a picture on social media. He gives away all his ice cream for free, his business is all over the internet and he's broke by the end of the week. Sounds like a "business" plan I'd sooner not share with Lord Sugar!!!
Is it not really just begging???
