Post by ClaretTony » Thu Jul 04, 2019 3:41 pm

Another five seasons added with league tables, results, scorers (for and against) and the programme covers. These are 1955/56 to 1959/60.

7th, 7th, 6th, 7th & 1st.......Just the best time ever.

Some remarkable attendances for FA Cup games in a period when the Cup was viewed very differently.

More famous opposition goalscoring names.

More and more names I recall now Roy even though I didn't see some of them play such as Nat Lofthouse. There's Bobby Robson on there, Tommy Doc, Jimmy Greaves to name but three and a some more ex-Clarets scoring against us in Roy Stephenson, Alan Shackleton & Billy Gray.

I managed to get the 57/58 & 58/59 seasons done today so I could get this batch live. Not sure when the next lot will be ready though.

Billy Elliott there again again, Tony. We sold him far too soon.

Bill Perry, Norman Deeley & Greaves, all of whom scored Cup Final goals. Sure there will be more.

My dad would have agreed with you on that. Way before my time but was told he was hard as nails and used to cross balls like rockets just inches off the ground. He was loved at Sunderland too.

Tommy Taylor, possibly the best centre-forward I've ever seen, scored against us in November'57, just 3 months before he perished in the Munich air disaster.

Excellent, well done, thanks Tony.
It brings back memories for us oldies, West Ham game August 59 was my 1st, that Championship side photo must be the best ever of the Clarets.

On the subject of the championship season. I did a series of articles during the 2009/10 season on the 50th anniversary. I'm intending updating them and re-running it next season. Incredible that it's now 60 years ago.

Didn't he once get sent off for 'looking at the referee aggressively'?

Not at the referee, at his opponent and the referee sent him off for a look of intent. Was against Man City.

The real poor result was the 3-3 draw in FA Cup from 3-0 up and a harsh penalty against Elder for arm ball in 1960
Also that run in of 10 games in 34 days from March 30th to May 2nd 1960 (W5 D3 L2) was almost as bad as the 12 games in 31 days from March 31st to April 30th when we blew up in 62. W1 D5 L4 and drew and then beat Fulham in FA Cup SF.
Great suff again Tony

Villa were definitely our bogey-side in Cup competitions during that period. We played 7 Cup games against them between the '56/'57 season and '60/'61 and didn't manage to win once. The name Peter McParland continued to be a thorn in our side, he scored 4 times against us in the FA Cup games in '56/'57 & '58/'59.

McParland was the one winger Angus couldn't handle

Can't remember if he also scored against us in those 3 League Cup semi-final games in '60'/'61, Tony ?

Don't think he did but he was a hell of a player and was in the same NI team as Jimmy Mac at the 1958 World Cup.

Indeed he was. I have a vivid recollection of one of his two goals in 6th Round replay on the Turf in '59.

We'd drawn at Villa on the previous Saturday and were then supremely confident of making the semi-final before McParland did his usual job on us. Angus had played in that first game but was replaced by Tommy Cummings for the replay. I wonder if that was because McParland had given John the runaround in the first game ?

Northern Ireland 58 World Cup squad was very strong - Blanchflower, Bingham, Gregg, Wilbur Cush, Peacock, Mac, McParland and possibly Dougan. Amazing for such a small country.

Villa were our bogey team more so at Villa Park and it is ironic that 1) we won the league after their relegation in 1959 2) in 61-62 season we beat Villa 2-0 at Villa Park and then went on that awful run in April 1962 where we only won once losing four and drawing 5.
We only beat them once after that in the top flight in 1967 until we beat them in 2015 in the last match Danny Ings played for us
Think we won 8 times lost 28 and drawn 13 in all league games at Villa Park worse than our record at Old Trafford

Got to feel sorry for Wolves, one point short of winning the title three years running and completing the double. Actually no I don't feel sorry for them. Tough ****.

All the Wolves players were there at Maine Road on that famous Monday night, sat in the best seats and I believe thinking it was a mere formality they were going home with the title. Thankfully the Burnley players had a different plan and it was us that returned home happy.

Villa were always our bogey team away from home in my early days of watching Burnley but, one cup tie apart, it is the reverse when Villa come to the Turf. They haven't won here since the 1930s.

Talking of Villa, anyone remember Stan Lynn the full back who didn't believe in taking prisoners. Played for Villa in the 50s and Accy Stanley before that. Some of his tackling was brutal to say the least.

If you look at the results pages, he scored in one of the games against us from the penalty spot. He went to Birmingham after Villa.

Think most of those programmes are the scans I sent to Tony about 10 years ago for a previous site. :D

They are and then spijed’s dad did a hell of a lot of scans for me. Took me ages to try and find a way to get them on UTC and in the end I had to merge front and back covers into one image.

Looking through those programmes there are some real memory-jerkers but first time I think I've seen the programme for our game against Bayern Munich in the Tournament of New York in 1960. Not everything went according to plan prior to that tournament and in Jimmy Mac's own words.....
......."It was a very excited team that gazed upon the famous Statue of Liberty and sailed up the Hudson River into New York's magnificent harbour. We thought we should soon be seeing the bright lights of Manhattan, but instead we found ourselves in a dingy hotel in Brooklyn. So we kicked up a fuss about it and luckily we were soon moved to a better hotel."

Only the best for the Champions of England!

Nothing wrong with a dingy hotel in Brooklyn. :D
