Modern films should reflect society as is. Historic films should reflect society as it was then. No need to try and rewrite history to accommodate modern tastes, criteria or lifestyles. Should Disney make new films that have characters from different ethnic backgrounds ? Of course they should.

Re: #NotMyAriel
I notice most school books now have families from different backgrounds which reflects modern society and this is a good thing. It’s important for kids to see people in books or on tv that look like them. What I think is silly is saying let’s have a black James Bond just so we can say we have had one. The books were written years ago about a public school boy who in all reality wasn’t. Same would apply to say a black William Shakespeare. It doesn’t really matter on the face if it but you are trying to rewrite or distort history. Just think of a new main character who is from an ethnic background. Plenty of examples about of good main characters from ethnic backgrounds.

Re: #NotMyAriel
On stage, black actors and actresses are much more able to be accepted playing "white" roles, especially where race is not the issue. (Though it was a bit odd to see Othello at the Globe last year, with Iago's wife being a black woman.) On screen, it's a lot less accepted - if a black actress plays Queen Elizabeth it's because the director is making a deliberate point about her being black, not because she just happened to be the best person for the job.
I can't see any reason at all why a black woman can't play a mermaid. Does anyone have strict and scientific rules about the skin colour of mermaids? Of course not.

I'm still confused as to why a real mermaid wasn't cast for the part. I don't care what colour her skin is, I'm more bothered she has legs.

Why are you a racist, Andy? A genuine question. Was it your upbringing, just ignorance of other cultures or events/experiences in your personal life that have led you to being a person with such bigoted views?AndyClaret wrote:The real trigger kittens are those who won't be happy until all actors are ethnics.

I agree with what you say about William Shakespeare but why not a black Bond?Blackrod wrote:I notice most school books now have families from different backgrounds which reflects modern society and this is a good thing. You could make it so the name is a code word for whoever is 007 and it would probably work if the actor was good enough, what I wouldn't agree with is a female James Bond as I don't think gender-switching works, as we've seen in Ghostbusters and Doctor Who.
Personally, I think they should have taken it further by having the new Ariel as a young, black LGBT boy. Now that would be "woke".

Re: #NotMyAriel
Why would anyone over the age of 8 be remotely interested in this ?? Using black characters gives dream like extended publicity and virtually guarantees a huge hit . I imagine the “ black $” is a good market and add to that that 99.99999999% of people would not be put off seeing such a film because of black character
