Is this Now The Real World?

Post by houseboy » Mon Jul 08, 2019 1:46 pm

I've just been in the kitchen at work and there were 3 of the younger girls in there chatting. One said, literally, 'OMG, I looked at my phone last night and realised I hadn't looked at Instagram or Snapchat all day, I couldn't believe it'. This said in a shocked and somewhat horrified tone.

I left the room in silence thinking 'have we really come to this'? I use social media (I used to work in it) but I maybe glance at FB once a day and if I look at Twitter once a month that is much as I do (it's probably less). I'm in a family group on WhatsApp but only look at it if there's an alarm. I have another couple of things which I never look at from one month to the next. Is this a generational thing? I'm not suggesting social media is bad, far from it, but some people just seem a little...obsessed.

Does this forum qualify as social media (or anti-social media most of the time) as I only personally know 2 people on it (that I know of) and I haven't seen either of those for about 40 years?

One thing I do think about that I find strange is when I'm walking around, particularly in Burnley, I often find myself wondering if anyone I see in the street is someone I've had an argument with on here. How odd is that?

File this under 'thought for the day'.

Live in a house, two kids, four twenty odds regularly visit with grandkids.... I cannot remember what any of them look like, just the back of their phones. It is good to talk... but better to SMS now it seems.

Which commedian said 'I invited some friends round the other night so we could all stare at our phones'? Was it Jason Manford?

I used to live in a house but my daughters have started visiting so often with the grandkids I have taken to living in a tent in the back garden for some peace, even then the kids pull the pegs out and laugh at my attempts to escape.

Just turn the Wifi off
Or if you live in a decent 4G area, replace your loft insulation with tin foil
Or have themed '1990s' evenings

I did turn the wi-fi off once but the resultant nervous breakdowns and threats of death have made me realise it's not worth it. I also used to take the fuse out of the shower at the box because one of my daughters (now left) used to spend so long in it. The screams left me rolling about with laughter.

Whilst I do understand the sentiment, there is something ironic about complaining about the youth using social media by using social media.

It is indeed ironic if you consider this to be social media but I think of this place as somewhere to come if you are feeling masochistic and are in need of therapy. Can it be classified as social media when the average age of it's users is about 93 (and a half). :D

This is the real world, you need to get used to it. 24/7/365 connectivity is now the norm. What we are going to do with that one day every four years goodness only knows.

20 years ago the Internet was an escape from the real world.

Now the real world is an escape from the internet.

Mobile phones can make you closer to people at the other end of the world.
But take you further away from them inside the same room.

I was following some people who came out of an office. They were all on their phones talking, texting or whatever else you do on them these days. They weren't talking to each other.

I don't think I could do that.

Nearly ran a youth over today crossing the road whilst staring down at his phone (he also had earphones in...). This is getting more common, hopefully I'll get one soon.

They'd probably sue you and win, bit like that silly woman who stepped in front of that cyclist without looking...

I’ve just invested in a study for the back garden... some peace if I ever get chance to finish it.

It isn't just younger people.

You'll see parents at a park/playground more interested in their phone than what their kids are doing.

I don't know if this is an original quote from you or if it is something you read but either way it is bloody brilliant. It encapsulates all that is bad about the mobile phone generation. Something that is in itself a brilliant invention which helps people keep in touch and can (and does) actually save lives has somehow become a drug-like creation that is sucking the life out of social situations.

If people want to pay royalties then it's mine.

If not, it was seen on social media.
