Another meh signing that doesn’t improve out first 11.
We need to push the boat out a bit more and actively target players better than what we have got. I see this as a paper over the cracks type of signing

Re: ARTICLE: Pieters signs as Burnley go shopping at Stoke again
There’s a bit of numb nuttery about this one. It’s a position that we needed cover for, and cover that would provide competition to Taylor. We’ve ticked both boxes, whilst bringing the age of the squad down.
Yes we need to improve the first XI but this wasn’t the position in which to do this.
Getting at least two in at the beginning of pre season is really positive (assuming Jay comes off). It’s something that we have needed to improve upon and I can fully accept that one or two others may take longer to get a deal through.
Good work BFC

We can only afford to 'push the boat out' on one, maybe two signings and most here seem to want those to be further up the pitch. So it's even more sense for these defensive covering roles to be done at maximum value for money.

Us as a club need better quality players and I’m not having it that we can’t afford it, we can pay but are unwilling too.
Signing aging squad players leads to stagnation followed by regression. You can’t stand still in modern football you always have to be looking to improve.

Totally agree that we have to improve the starting eleven but we would be having to spend a fortune to better Charlie Taylor - would rather we got Charlie to sign an extension and accept Pieters as back upRight_winger wrote:Us as a club need better quality players and I’m not having it that we can’t afford it, we can pay but are unwilling too.

Jay Rod, if signed, is for me an improvement on Woods/Barnes
But I certainly agree that we have to improve across the middle of the park and monies should be heavily invested there
Are the club unwilling to spend the money or is the manager too biased towards some current players who should be replaced ?

Given the ever inflating transfer market and given Taylor's huge improvement last season, I wouldn't dare to hazard a guess as to how much we would have to spend. We needed a left back and we've got one for a good price and a good one at that.Tall Paul wrote:How much do you think we'd have to spend to get a better left back than Taylor, given that Tyrone Mings is costing Villa £25m?

Good solid signing. Competition can only make the current shirt holder better which we’ve seen on many occasions. He is not still an international so I don’t know why people mention that as some sort of bonus. It’s like saying Crouch is an England International

A good experienced signing which strengthens the squad.
I do, however, feel that we are treading water, as opposed to going forwards.
That is more of an observation of the current climate rather than a dig at the club.

Oh, I don't know, nothing to £5m should have covered it.Spijed wrote:So how much should we spend on a left-back then to sit on the bench?
We didn't need a better player than Taylor or even one as good as Taylor. We only needed a player better than Pieters who could offer us some form of resale value we could work with. That would have been a better deal.
If every position is looked at as a profit centre as well as a playing position we just closed down one of ours for 2 years and filled it with a left back banana skin who was struggling to hold his own in the Championship.
Jonas Knudsen on a free transfer - current International, not an International from 8 years ago.
Daley Sinkgraven for £5m - midfield back up as well
Or instead of chasing after players that were identified by Stokes ex chief scout shouldn't we could have gone for a player he is after now and the player Stoke might be looking to bring in for something like 2-3m and lower wages?
https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/f ... ck-3055858" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A couple of extra million would have opened up a lot of options. I just listed three, but if our amazing new recruitment system is doing its job we should have had targets beyond our usual " one stop can we have a player you don't want shop".
The real question is why we had to wait until now to sign Pieters.
Jay Rod might have attracted interest from another bidder when all of the clubs had full transfer kitties, but I can't image that Pieters would have.
My concern isn't having older players in the squad, or decent make weights to fill out the squad, it is having to many of them and a poor overall age spread.

IF he's come very cheap in terms of transfer fee and providing we're not paying him a small fortune in wages, it makes a lot of sense, as he's more than decent back up for Taylor in a sometimes difficult to fill position. Not strengthening our starting 11, but ok business.

If you want a signing that would improve the starting 11, then that means Taylor would be dropped to the bench, which is harsh.
