I wonder what the record fee is for a 33yr old keeper?

If we got 10m for him it should cover his wages since he joined and be good for both parties.

Providing he wants to move.

We need to get another club interested to create an auction.

There should be a number of PL clubs who will pay more than £10m for Tom.

Manure for one which would guarantee his England place

It's all down to Tom, sign a new deal and stay and fight, or go for 1 big last pay day, he has earned the chance to choose what he wants to do.

I was told in January that Harts contract states he can be lower than "second choice" Dyche told Pope it's up to him to take number 1 from Heaton regardless of Hart.

This would be a complete travesty in my opinion. I understand we have 2 other keepers but selling your captain, inspiration and best keeper to a direct relegation rival is incomprehensible.

It strikes me that TH is not prepared to be anything but No1 at Burnley, a shame if that is the case, but he would have to go

If true, 7 million is derisory. Find another as good at 10 million let alone 7. Sounds like Tom wants away and if so good luck to him but price has to be right

I’d have thought we would be holding out for quite a bit more. Think I’m in the risk/ allow Tom to run down his contract and all look at it again in the New Year camp.

Not keen on selling a top keeper to Villa must be worth £5m you’d have thought to Burnley. So I’d start the bidding at £15m.. if they want him.

This would not be good news. Surely Hart won’t be happy being number 2. You would think Pope would be the natural successor to Heaton in a season but then look at Steve Ogrizovic and Shilton. Is this just about contract length and cash ? Surely Heaton could play one more season and done to some tinpot outfit in China.

Have you considered that Heaton wants to go? Dyche won't stand in the way of a player who wants out, Vokes for example.

Linked with Villa during last transfer window then turns down contract extension which was pretty reliably publicised. Inevitable he has got a decent offer from Villa now they are splashing the PL windfall which he will feel gives him a better chance of becoming England No. 1 / staying in the PL.

I know Tom is very popular however after Pope contract extension he probably sees his future elsewhere.

I'm sure Pope signed the new contract with the belief he'd be number 1 and it backs that up with Heaton deciding to leave.

Well I don't think (1) Pope would have signed the contract and (2) Heaton would be leaving, had it not happened because Heaton was first choice last season. Something must have been said to make Pope believe he'll be most likely to start.

How's about Burnley offered a 1 year extension and Villa have offered 3 year contract on similar or more money and a signing on fee?

What would you choose?

Pretty much the reason I would consider sanctioning it at £15m. If Tom wants to leave, he deserves a goodwill gesture. However any less than £15m does not compensate Burnley for losing the player, loosing the player to a potential rival, or losing their potential number one for next season. £15m is playing fair with everyone imo

Tom here's a one year extension to your current contract.

Nick here's a new five year contract.

Exactly this
No way Pope has been told he is no 1 when he was no 3 all of last season.
Pope is good enough to be our no 1 - but that’s sorted on the pitch and not in the managers office with a new contract being signed

I’d be very displeased if he left but could stomach it if the money is ploughed into an awesome central midfielder or his wages /signing on fee.

Can you imagine this board if we bid 15m for a 33yr old?

Some were going mad about us signing Gary Cahill on a free

It is slightly different with goalkeepers though. Not too rare to have them playing at the top level until their late 30s

Pope is in my opinion a better goalkeeper and is also younger by a good few years. Sadly, I don’t think either of them will want to stay here if they’re going to be number 2.

Easy to say “form and performance” but if we’re honest, only an injury would lead to either of them being replaced in the starting lineup.

Selling Pope instead of Heaton would be a serious mistake. And Heaton clearly wants the move.

As above post it is common for goalkeepers to play far longer than outfield players. Hence they retain value better when you get a good one.

Surely the first choice 'keeper will be picked on his pre-season form? It could even be Joe Hart!

I understand they might play longer but I don't think there's much evidence of them keeping any value.

Has any 33yr old keeper gone for more than 5m?

It could well be but I reckon he will have gone by the start of the season too. The UTC theme will change from having too many keepers to not enough.

I seem to recall CT saying that since Pope's recovery, on the few games he'd seen, Pope hadn't played particularly well.

Think he only played 2 games last season after his injury. Barnsley at home in the FA Cup and they didn’t have a shot on target and then City away in the FA Cup. Against City he had a good first half but then messed up for a couple of the goals in the second half.

Yes but as I say, neither keeper would want to be second choice - in the interests of their career. It’s not like sitting on the bench as an outfield player. It’s perfectly conceivable that barring 2-3 cup matches, whoever’s second choice will never see a football pitch this coming season.

But Tom was later into first team football, and is a current number one at his club. Think it is fair to assume Tom can play for another five, six or even seven years at this level. Age will not be a major issue.

Tom Heaton has been sensational for us, as Captain, an influencer in defence and an inspiration. Nick Pope is also sensational but when analysing the situation then Pope is the future because of his age and ongoing development. It's a tragedy this situation has arisen for us as we have been truly blessed with great goalkeepers but we all knew this was likely to happen. I would rather Heaton stays with us and Hart goes but I can see why Heaton has to go. He needs and wants to regularly play and although his career can continue it is likely that a three year contract will more likely be his last so another club may be able to make him their number 1 and regularly playing. Pope has the greater future transfer value to us whereas Heaton's value will decrease over time. So to get the best fee for Heaton that we can makes more sense than letting him run down his contract but also as a sign of respect to him as the great servant he has been then if he can continue his career elsewhere then we should let him go with our very best wishes.

The only proviso to this however is that we should avoid selling him to a potential relegation rival and the fee needs to reflect his ability and worth. That being the case £7m is not enough but posters on here suggesting £15m or £20m are over the top. If we were lucky enough to get £12m then I would be happy , I think £10m is more likely however.

Aston Villa have slapped in bids for Burnley keeper Tom Heaton and Egyptian winger Trezeguet.

Villa have made their move for Heaton after Championship Stoke refused to drop their £25million price tag on England shot-stopper Jack Butland.

But Villa have told Burnley they will not pay over the odds for Heaton, who is 33 and only has one year left on his contract.

The Clarets are willing to move on Heaton and Joe Hart after giving fellow shot-stopper Nick Pope a new long-term deal.

And a move to Villa could be sealed later this week to make Heaton Villa's seventh summer signing.

I think if Heaton goes there is a good chance that Dyche will have Hart in goal, there is a good chance Pope could be a little rusty in preseason.

Dyche only turned to Heaton when he had no choice, he tried different formations, different outfield players etc, dropping Hart was one of the few options left. I dont think Heaton trusts Dyche.

Why is Hart still here? surely we could have released him on a free if anyone was interested.

Dyche only turned to Heaton when he had no choice, he tried different formations, different outfield players etc, dropping Hart was one of the few options left. I dont think Heaton trusts Dyche.

Why is Hart still here? surely we could have released him on a free if anyone was interested.
Maybe nobody is interested.
