As we have reputation for playing narrow, even with wide players, now is the time to make ‘system history’.
Time to unleash 2 2 2 2 2. This is because we have plenty of midfield runners, Cork, Westwood and Hendricks. Wide midfielders, Brady, Gudmundsson, Lennon, McNeill, full backs, Lowton and Beardsley, Taylor and Pieters. Central strikers in Wood and Barnes and mobile frontmen in Rodriquez and Vydra. We don’t have a ball winning midfielder and we perhaps don’t really have an obvious creative central advanced midfielder, other than Defour who needs to prove his fitness long term and maybe McNeill who may eventually grow into that role but right now it’s all a bit iffy.
Back in the day teams would set up as a 2-3-5. So my first 2-2 are our full backs behind our centre backs. Then our two midfield runners who of course are supported by our centre backs who double up as our ball winners. In front of our runners come our wide players, supporting our front central strikers. Of course it has to be fluid to allow Tarks or Ben to step forward when able and both to step back when needed and of course for set pieces.

And of course our runners move forward to give 5 across, not much different to what we do now. But at least we can utilise the ball winners/tacklers that we already have.
