Isn't it 20 years since we signed him? I'm sure we got him summer '99 before the promotion season. Could be my memory playing tricks though.

I always wished we'd given him more of a chance. When we got him from Villa, he couldn't stop scoring in pre-season, including the winner against Everton. He did well after he left us too.

Hope he does well in his new role.

He was a bit of a character as a young man. I too wish we’d have kept hold of him longer. Good luck to him in his new venture.

That’s probably what he will always be remembered for. When he was with us he was a striker with no bottle. We sold him to Rotherham and Ronnie Moore turned him into an over aggressive striker.

He’s very highly regarded by Rotherham fans. Club legend.

I always remember him for his Ipswich appearance where we moved Chris McCann back to CH. Chris marked him out of the game and then popped up with an 89th minute winner.
Good luck to the guy.

I’m not surprised. He did really well for them.

I always thought that Stan Ternent never really gave him a chance. He was constantly subbed around the hour mark and he knew it was coming and that pressure was affecting his game.

He proved he could compete at that level when he left and the goals started coming.

He couldn’t have been subbed too often, he only started twice for us.

The bloke could/can drink! In one of the oddest things of all time, my Dad and I ended up on the Pi$$ with him and John Mullin on the Isle of Man, when both teams were there for pre-season (2003). Ended up in a sparsely populated disco underneath the Hilton, which was where Rotherham were staying, as it was the only bar in Douglas still open that late.

Hardly the best preparation for the season ahead for those two, but both could certainly put the drink away. Was good talking to Mullin about his various different spells, especially as he was a young player trying to break through when I first really started going to games. Always thought he made a big difference when he came in on loan during the great escape season. Had much less to say to Lee about his time here!!!

I asked him exactly that when he was just about to take a throw in right in front of us on the Longside some years later when he was playing for Ipswich.
I swear he stared back at me for about five minutes, before fluffing his throw. Obviously affected him as badly as us.
