If Defour Is Injured

If Stephen De Four is unlikely to be fit then who would you like to see us targeting. For me Shelvey of Newcastle. He does not always play atr Newcastle and might fancy a move. He is a tremendous, tough midfielder. Hard to knock off the ball and exceptional passer. If we could get him and keep the existing team that would be a huge pre-season

Decent shout though I suspect wages might be a problem

Decent player, on his day, but he has an awful lot of mehhhh days. Not sure he’s a character to fit in but have no proof.

I thought that but he may want to get away and become settled after a few moves

I've mentioned Shelvey a few times, but don't recollect any/many others taking to him.

Looked good on TV but then so do a few over the years but yes could do worst I suppose.

Has he got some sort of a discipline problem though?

I wonder if we will see McNeill tried in a central role in pre season?

No where near as bad as Joey and look at him. Think he is feisty and competitive, with SD's influence you never know

If he is on £80k a week it could be a challenge, but Jay Rod must have been on close to this a few years ago

We need a reliable midfielder to provide competition

There must be a reason Shelvey isn't playing and Newcastle aren't Man City so that should start some alarm bells ringing. Having said that we have a similar 'mystery' with Vydra so who knows?

I can see Shelvey at Burnley under Dyche (dependant on wages).
Imagine his qualities and ability to ping a ball up field to the front man could make him a fantastic signing... when he's on his game

He's also very good at spreading the play out to the likes of McNeil, quickly, getting us up the park quickly.. on the floor!

He’s not that good.
An occasional few good games don’t make up for all the poor ones where you might as well play with 10 when the opposition have the ball.

I’ve just spoken to Steven Defour in Manchester airport and he told me he’s on the way to see a specialist in Belgium.but he did say he was getting near to full fitness.

If he is indeed off to see the specialist yet again, we absolutely must bring in another midfielder.

For those on here saying there must be a reason for Shelvey not always starting at Newcastle it could be a clash with the manager. Westwood was not even getting on the bench at Villa, and Stephen Ward was not allowed to train with the first team at Wolves. These guys have been tremendous for us

Sounds like a load of Belgium waffle to me.

I fail to see the slavish like attention the seemingly perma injured Belgian gets. I can only remember 1 goal against a beaten knackered accy Stanley and a cracking free kick vs Man Utd. I think he managed half a season that year . No doubting his class but the idea of him coming back as some world class midfielder and orchestrating matches is pure and utter fantasy .

Berge at Genk, classy DM , can also play CB but he'd cost £20m+, if you want an attacking MF then Vanaken at Club Brugge - 45 goals & 45 assists in 170 games. Bourigeaud at Rennes, 18 goals, 12 assists in 91 games in Ligue 1, Rongier at Nantes, Maksimovic at Getafe..... Mostly younger end with good sell-on values.
I know, I should get out more, only suggestions, but have a look & judge for yourselves
