I was at Old Trafford the 'night' we beat Gloucestershire when there were no lights. The match finished in almost darkness. Lancs had a great team then, led by a superb captain. RIP jack.

Great captain...one of the old school. Can't remember which game but I remember him taking an absolutely brilliant catch and him then saying afterwards that he was more surprised than anyone.

Was also at Old Trafford for the Gloucester game with Bond facing the very quick Mark Proctor of South Africa at one end in the dark and no helmets worn and David Hughes facing Spinner John Mortimore at the other end

That was a game changing catch in a Lords final. We were under the cosh but I can’t remember the opponents.

Flat Jack was Rishton's Jack Simmons
The "famous" match changing Jack Bond catch was off Asif Iqbal in the Gillette Cup against Kent at Lords. (Might have been 1971?)
All this with no help from google. Amazing what you can remember from your mid-teens!
Anyway. Great memories of a great team led by an inspirational captain.

My memory was good! And it was indeed 1971.
Here's the details.
Asif iqbal c Bond b Simmons for 89. Kent then subsiding to 200 all out chasing 224.
(224 was considered a very decent score off 60 overs back in the 1970s.)

Lancashire had a cracking side in those days, full of stars, and as a young lad I would go over to Old Trafford for the cricket, whenever my mother would let me, mainly for the John Player League on Sundays, which we won in the first two seasons of it's existence. Some great scenes from Lords the day Bond took that catch - loads of Lancastrians at Lords in those days [we took over the place] whenever we made a one-day final, which was often, the 1980's included.

I wasn't at the famous Gloucestershire match at OT which finished in the near dark, with David Hughes hitting it to all parts...this is the climax to that memorable match after Mike Proctor had put Glos. in a strong position with a hard hitting 65..

RIP Jack Bond a smashing captain and a real character.

What sad news, probably the best captain our county have had, certainly in my lifetime. Despite not being the best player in the team by any means, he had the ability to get that side playing really well and there are two moments I'll always remember which have both been mentioned, the catch to dismiss Asif Iqbal in the final against Kent and, of course, the first ever day/night game when we beat Gloucestershire.

Lancashire County Cricket Club is a poorer place today for his passing.

RIP Jack and thanks for your captaining of that brilliant team in the late 60s & early 70s.

Out of interest, what made Lancashire such a good one day side during that period, certainly far better than most other sides around that time?

Very sad news. My wife and I bumped into Mr & Mrs Bond on the beach in Antigua on the 2004 tour of the Windies. Spent a good hour chatting about cricket, Lancashire and life in general. What a lovely, modest man he was. RIP Jack.

Answer: (Probably) Jack Bond - who embraced it and helped his team adapt to the new formats. He understood the importance of fielding and field placement in the shorter formats, and how a new committed style of fielding could be worth a large percentage of runs. (Other teams copied this of course).
But also the fact that we had 2 outstanding one-day oversees players: Clive Lloyd and Farohk Engineer.

Big hero of mine in my earlier years.
Smashing cricketer and Lancs skipper.
Managed to have a beer with him when he was Landlord of a pub near me.
I told him that my dad & I got locked out of that famous Glo game, and had to watch it on our TV.
He told me not to worry, that would have been better, if we'd been there, we wouldn't have seen much at the end.

That Gillette game v Gloucestershire was astonishing, it wasn't quite as dark as it looked on TV but it wasn't far off.

Bit before my time,i was more the Akram,Fairbrother era,when i developed an interest in LCC,but that Gloucs game was one of the all time one day classics,i've read about and had stories relayed to me by older relatives of the greatness of the 1970's side,the facts bear that out we dominated the Gillette Cup in the early part of the decade,in fact it was a shock if we didn't win it,i note Jack's great regret was never winning a CC,at least he lived long enough to see us finally break that barren spell in 2011.

Those three finals, the first one was OK, but we were losing the second until that incredible catch from Bond and then came the third against Warwickshire, who had four current West Indian test players, when we went into it without both Lever & Shuttleworth and with Peter Lee carrying an injury. Clive Lloyd opened the bowling and he and Wood both bowled their full allocation of 12 overs for next to nothing. Then Clive Hubert Lloyd picked up his bat and slayed the Warwickshire bowling.

I missed most of that 1972 final because I was down in Portsmouth watching the Clarets win 2-0 and go top of the league.


Brilliant days to be a cricket watching Lancastrian and what a treat you got if you went to OT and CH Lloyd had one of those days with the bat.

I will be at the Emirates Old Trafford before the start of play tomorrow morning (Northern fail permitting) and know that they will give Jack the respectful send off that he deserves. A great captain and player.

There is no way that game should have ended given the light that over from Hughes I never tire of seeing.
