Koiki, Taylor, Heaton & Defour all missed out - Dyche said there were some knocks but nothing serious although I don't think that would have included Defour who we knew would be missing.

I think the manager would like to see another couple but as we know from last year, it's not that easy.

Reading between the lines it seems clear we'll be building a team around Benson this season and Dyche will only pick 2 of the 3 keepers

Unsurprising to see Burnley’s best goalscorer on target. Love to see it.

All too familiar. Dyche was watching the women's world cup and described this as a knock too. I guess she will be out for the season.

Vydra making a sub appearance in the 65th minute in a game like this. Finished at this club if we’re being honest - I’d keep him as back up but, like Hart I don’t think he’d sit well at all with being a bench player with very limited opportunities.

Both started last season really well but Goodridge then did his cruciate and is just on his way back. Benson, I thought impressed, but he missed the end of the season with a hamstring injury at a time when all four u23 central midfielders were injured.

Both Benson & Goodridge are still just 19 though so we need to be patient, you don't get a McNeil every year, players like him coming through are exceptional.

That squad is improving, no doubt about it, but we are still in recovery mode in the academy although things are moving forward really well now and hopefully we'll be preparing for cat 1 this time next year.
Do you think going CAT 1 would be completely dependent on us retaining our place in the PL ?

I would potentially think so but I believe the plan is to push for Cat 1 at the next audit which will be due during this coming season. That will take us to another level with our games programme at under-18 and under-23 level.

As Tom hasn’t signed a contract and has interest he has to be the one to sit out.
If only in case he gets injured, which would leave us with all 3 still on the books.
IF!! he leaves we still have two fine keepers. If he signs a contract the situation changes.

I think Benson made a comeback because of the stick he received on the worst manager we have ever had.

Some crazy comments on this thread, I’m not sure if I’ve fallen into the trap but are people seriously reading into a training ground work out and suggesting players will be leaving based on how many minutes they got

Surely in a training game you can play as many goalkeepers as you wish, giving all three a run out, even so, not to play the goalkeeper who finished the season as number one is a little strange to say the least.

If you have three goalkeepers and you can only realistically give two match practice in a pre-season friendly then logically you are going to choose the ones most likely to start the the season for the club.

It's not just the game though. I haven't seen any comments from Sean as to why Tom didn't play. Quite happy to say Taylor had an injury. Bearing in mind it was the clubs media team doing the interviews iam pretty sure they were told what to say, and I find it very strange no mention was made as to why Tom missed the game.

Is Josh Benson a central midfielder? What sort of player is he?

Edit - just watched the interview of Benson and he describes himself as a box-to-box midfielder. 'Energetic' according to Jimmy Dunne.

Heaton not playing isn't strange - simple explanation is there's a good possibility he will leave.

The logic is simple

Heaton doesn't want to be a number 2
He us in the last year if his contract
He has already turned down the offer of a new deal
He will fetch the most money of him and Hart if sold
Theres keen interest in him

Why would you risk losing upto 10m in income for nothing more than a knock about.

As reported m, Heaton was very nearly a Villa player last window, it wouldn't surprise at all if that happened this window, leaving us Pope and Hart, with what I believe the latter being happy to fight it out for the Jersey, and be on the bench should Pope be number 1 (which IMO he will )

I don’t think he’d want to start changing keeper part way through a half to be honest. Dyche will know why he chose the two he did. Maybe Tom was one of the players he referred to us having minor knocks. We will see what happens in terms of team selection for the next two games.

Does he? Why? Hasn't been the case with a number of other players in recent years so not sure why this one has to be different. Ings, Boyd, Arfield, Ward have all run their contracts down.

But now we have 3 England internationals for one spot. Apart from Ings, you know the story, the others were ageing, cover was available and not Tom’s value.
PS. I don’t want him to leave but why keep a, possibly, unhappy keeper?

I just wish Dyche knew there was another 6 friendlies to get minutes into them.

Shocking that he doesn't.

Ings we still got money for and doubt anyone would have paid much for the others even with 12 months remaining so probably not a big deal unlike Tom who we could potentially get about £10m for.

£10 million - and if he stays and plays and performs so we stay up - that's another £100 million +.

Not just an unhappy keeper, but club captain and a massive part of the squad. None of us really know what's going on but I think if Dyche sees Pope as our number 1 then Heaton has to go.

I'm just pleased that we have managed to get a couple of players in early this summer and the squad gets a proper pre season this year. Last year's early start did us no favours. When is Gaffas day? Bet the players are really looking forward to that one!

If you look on the BFC website they kinda tell you this..

On a side note (refering to earlier posts) I find it amusing that some look at a behind closed doors friendly and try and make out Seans team & tactics for the season ahead.

Like all friendlies/games etc at this time its about getting time on the pitch... not about winning / how many goals etc.... just because a player does or doesn't feature means bugger all at this stage.....

We all know there will be some more out goings and incomings with personel.....

Apart from Up The Clarets and the gossip column on BBC, I don't really spend much time during the off season reading about football related matters, so not really up to date with the smaller details.
Good news is, I can rely on this site for anything Clarets related.

Just seen a clip showing a Brady free kick curling away from the keeper for JayRod to head home. Linesman's flag up so no goal.

The club's own report says McNiell came in and played central midfield alongside Cork in the 2nd half with Benson going wide left.

Vydra came on after Fulham made their 11 substitutions in the 63rd minute with BFC changing their 3-5-2 to a 3-4-3 formation from the look of things

Hoping Tom Stays. He really helped keep us up last season and is by far the best organizer at the back for us.
I think Pope has the ability, however I also think he walked into a good situation when Heaton got injured. Tom had them well drilled and already set up to protect him well. I hate to say it but I have suspicions that had Pope played last year instead of Hart it could have broken him. The defence was the problem and Heaton was needed to sort it out. Hart got the blame yet I doubt Pope would have done any better. All three are good keepers... I just rate them Tom, Nick and then Joe a fair bit behind.

Heaton came back to training a week after Pope & Hart, probably a factor in not getting minutes yesterday.

Only another 49 successful attempts this season to go then!!

Will that do for starters?

Not to mention not using VAR. What sort of unrealistic preparation is happening here?
