This week’s blast from the Burnley past is...
Paul Crichton
Used to be a big fan of his. Thought his kicking was excellent for a keeper at that level. Occasionally left stranded off his line. A key player in our 2000 promotion side, but not good enough for the next level up at that stage.

A master of a goalkeeper at not being where he should be although why on earth we replaced him with Nik Michopoulos I don't know.

No idea how tall Crichton actually was but he always looked short for a keeper. And he didn't have a great spring in his legs either. Average but did a job at the time.

Despite my earlier comment Tony, about Crichton not being good enough for the next level up, I totally agree about Michopoulos.
Back to Crichton, I remember Ipoua of Scunny and Evans of Brentford, very much catching our keeper in the wrong place!

Never known a goalkeeper out of position so much but at least he could see the ball coming at him, Nik the Greek couldn't.jdrobbo wrote:Despite my earlier comment Tony, about Crichton not being good enough for the next level up, I totally agree about Michopoulos.

Is my (failing) memory playing tricks on me or was there an away game where PC got stuck in traffic and couldn't make KO, as a result NTG stood in, had something of a blinder and kept his place - Huddersfield maybe?
That night at the City Ground ranks amongst one of the worst goalkeeping performances at the second tier of English football I ever recall.

Huddersfield is correct and on that occasion, NtG was outstanding

A key part of the last Burnley Team to play in the 3rd Tier; and one get us promoted automatically. He’ll always be fondly remembered by this Claret fan.

It's a strange one with this story coming out that NTG stepped in for Crichton at Huddersfield because he stuck in traffic, which might have been the case. NTG had played in the previous game, albeit the League Cup and everyone was expecting him to play in any case.EarbyClaret wrote:Is my (failing) memory playing tricks on me or was there an away game where PC got stuck in traffic and couldn't make KO, as a result NTG stood in, had something of a blinder and kept his place - Huddersfield maybe?

It was at Forest that we first realised just how bad he was. I think three flew past him that night when he didn't bother to move and within a month or so he'd done the same in two other games. That night at Forest, they had a terrific player in their side, from memory I think he was on loan from Bradford City and called Robbie Blake.

But I remember Jack Lester, not for the only time, running us ragged.

Am I right in thinking Crichton came in on loan, then went back before joining us permanently? Think Gavin Ward came in on loan in the meantime and he was really good for that level.

Paul Crichton was decent at the level we was at. He was certainly consistent where NTG, Beast, and Gabor in the following years were certainly not.
Most keepers at league 1 and Championship level have their limitations and throw a few clangers in every so often. We have been very lucky with Heaton and Pope in recent years. Two outstanding keepers in comparison

Didn’t he play every game in the ‘99/‘00 promotion season?
I remember him trotting out for one game with his name misspelled as “Chrichton” on his shirt. Made me and my brother chuckle.

We couldn’t handle the pair of them but we were actually the best team in the first half. We wore a new kit that night but it never saw the light of day again, the players refused to wear it.Buxtonclaret wrote:Robbie did play well for them that night.

It was yellow but I’m not sure of the sleeves. I think I’ve got a pic somewhere of Kevin Ball in that shirt, will see if I can dig it out.burnmark wrote:Bright yellow and navy sleeves.

On the subject of goalkeepers I was chatting to Mick Finn yesterday in Accrington and he reminded me of his debut for us at Stamford Bridge in 1974.......Time flies.
