Convicts records to be wiped

Post by Blackrod » Sat Jul 13, 2019 8:32 pm

Convicted murderers, sex offenders and drug dealers could have their records wiped. This way they don’t have to disclose it to potential employers which will help them back to work. Thiught CVs were supposed to be honest.

Found it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48975391" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So it's only some of them, and explicitly excludes murderers.

As always, the devil is in the details. I notice you've missed the "SOME" off of the initial headline to make it seem more sensational and changed it to Murderers.

The change will not apply to the most serious crimes - including murder.

It wont be applied to Murderers; it could possible be applied to people convicted of Manslaughter.

It also wont be automatic and will be reviewed, seems like a senisible part of the rehabilitation process, giving people a fair chance once they've done their time and demonstrated they are fit to play a part in society again.

And your point is?

Imagine you've hacked a few people to death and want to apply for a job in a slaughterhouse.

Why should your past stop you getting a new job?

Also they are being given free weed, heroin, cocaine and alcohol, and they are allowed to trade these as commodities.

Rapists and paedophiles are allowed out Eid al-Adha for 4 days in August :o

‘... a sensible part of the rehabilitation process ....’ for sex offenders. Nice.

Except that it's all on an individual basis and excludes serious crimes.

Yes, I believe people should be given a second chance, after they've served their given time in jail and proven they are no longer a risk to society, they should no longer have to live with the "stigma" of their previous crime.

I believe this will help those people get back into work, allow them to live a normal life and therefore reduce the risk of them reoffending and therefore reduce the risk of further crimes, such as sexual offences.

"It will not apply to those convicted of serious sexual, violent and terrorism offences, or where offences attract the most serious sentences, including life."

I know you really want people to be outraged at this, but that's not going to happen.

I'm no expert on law, right, but I was banned from Woolworths for shoplifting in my early teens....so if all convictions are quashed does that mean I'll be allowed back into Woollies again? I can't wait!

Convictions aren't quashed, but they are time barred. After a certain period, crimes that carry a length of sentence of less than a certain time - four years, if that article is correct - are time barred and don't appear on the public record, and don't have to be disclosed to prospective employers, and by law if the prospective employer finds out about it (which in these internet days he might well be able to) then he can't treat is as lying on the CV.

This, apparently, is going to extend it.

And don't make the News of the World mistake of assuming all sex offences are equally serious. When the NotW was running it's "let's lynch a paedophile" campaign under Rebekah Wade, they printed photos of two actual rapists either side of a man who, at the age of 17, was convicted of having sex with a 15 year old, who he subsequently married.

Sex with a consenting 15 year old is undoubtedly a sex offence. But it is an example of a sex offence IMO which is not a serious offence that need be carried for the rest of your life. Let him who is without sin ...

I'm surprised the press get away with throwing around the term paedophile. They don't seem to actually understand what the term means. By law, it's aged 13 or under. So the Adam Johnson case - he was never a paedophile and would never have been classed as a paedophile, yet the papers came out with that and put him down as one. Anybody who knows about the case knows it was a completely different classification to what the papers suggested.

Was he correct in what he did? No. He knew the rules and did it anyway. Is he anything near a paedophile? No. Nothing anywhere near. The newspapers put anything under 16 as a paedophile - how can they not know that's incorrect?
