Steve Bruce - BBC reporting he has resigned from Sheff Wed

As title

Looks like he is off to Newcastle.

Strange that he has resigned though before being announced? Is that normal?

Newcastle didn't want to pay the compo for him, but if he's quit anyway to end up at Newcastle I think Sheff Wed can put a complaint in, I'm sure someone's done it before and his new club paid compo anyway?

They have - Steve Bruce from Palace to Birmingham. Palace blocked the move for a while.

Sounds like typical wide boy tactics used by the usual suspect at Newcastle to me for obvious reasons.

We know that clubs can sack mangers at will, but Sheff Wed did give Bruce his holiday time when they appointed him, thinks they had to wait a month

What a charlatan he is.

Decent manager, but to say Sheff Wed allowed him time to complete his holiday before taking over and then this is how he behaves, he's a cheeky fat barsteward.

Hope the Toon drop like a stone this year. I think they will.

Its really poor form from Bruce - once again. No doubt he'll come out and say managing his boyhood club was a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity that was 'too good to turn down'. I'm sure he 'stood on the Gallowgate as a little boy' and 'he's not getting any younger' but reality might kick in if he aligns himself with Mike Ashley and has a tricky start to the season. The thing up there is that the fans had such a bond with Rafa - will take time for a former Sunderland manager to win that same respect.

For clubs like ours, whose first task is to avoid relegation, I think this is great news.

Better win % over his career than Sean Dyche, had 4 promotions and took Hull to an FA Cup final. Not one of the best managers ever but he's had a pretty good career which I would class as well above average.

That said I wouldn't be thrilled if I was a Newcastle fan and going from Rafa to Bruce is definitely a positive for our campaign next season

Not a surprise... I just cannot understand how chairman keep pinning their hopes on him. He has no loyalty or empathy for either his employers or fans.

This will be going down like a lead balloon I suspect with magpie fans... a bit like expect their season to go.

Maybe Ashley has done it for one last wind up of their fans.

Great loyalty shown from the ex Birmingham, Villa, Sheff U, Sheff Weds, Sunderland and future Newcastle manager.

Better win % than Sean Dyche, I haven’t checked but happy to take that.

I’d love to see a poll of both Burnley fans and Newcastle fans as to who they would prefer managing their club. I would guess it would be 100% of Burnley fans say Dyche and circa 80% of geordies say Dyche.

That said the great man didn’t get 100% of the our best manager of the last decade poll :o

I do but just pointing out the selection of clubs that he has managed that, to me, proves his lack of loyalty or tact.

He’ll be the first to moan when sacked after not getting a chance by any new potential owners but, as he had done before, is more than happy to resign to get what he wants.

How many of us would turn down the opportunity to manage the club we support in the Premier League to continue managing Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship? Stop being hypocrites.

Actually Dyche’s premier league win percentage is 28.28%

Bruce’s is 28.06%.

So Dyche has a better win % in the premier league

At least Big Sam gets results and keeps team in the top flight,Bruce's record isn't so clever.

He needs a quick start, but browsing their opening fixtures i'm not convinced he'll get one.

They play Arsenal,Tottenham and Liverpool in their first 5 matches,as well as a trip to newly promoted Norwich and a visit from Watford.

No easy pickings in that lot, they could easily find themselves adrift akin to last season, the difference is Rafa had the fans backing, and had proven himself the previous season,Steve Bruce won't have such goodwill.

1st managerial casualty of the season i reckon.

Yep and Dyche is a million miles above being a poor or bang average manager like some have suggested of Bruce.

I wasn't trying to infer that Bruce is a better manager than Dyche and I even said in my post I wouldn't be happy as a Newcastle fan but I was just giving a bit of balance to the fact that Bruce has actually had a good managerial career.

I felt showing his stats against Dyche and some of his achievements was a good way of doing this

Managed 10 clubs in 20 years compared to Cotterill managing 9 clubs in 20 years and on average managed more games per club that Stevie did

There’s no problem showing stats if they are accurate. There is no point in just stating he has a better win percentage when it isn’t relevant to managing in the premier league. In his last two championship seasons Dyche has lost 10 games. Bruce has probably lost more than that in his last full championship season (actually he lost 31 in 102 games for Villa)

Not really sure what you were inferring but you compared him to Dyche and there is no comparison. He may be a busted flush with his win % going back so long....

I've explained what I was inferring. I was inferring that he is neither a poor or bang average manager and has actually had a good managerial career. Showing his win % compared to a manager we all regard as exceptional and showing the successes he has achieved was I thought a good way of doing this as I also explained.

I think you took my post the wrong way making it too much about Dyche and if you disagree about Bruce and think he's not had a good managerial career then fair enough. Think its best we just park this as I don't think we need to side track the thread anymore and I don't think my original comment needed this much discussion

For all his past success he couldn't get Villa up,and Dean Smith could, that does suggest he's losing his touch.

Brian Laws and Carlos Carvalhal were plucked from mid-table obscurity in the second tier, and that didn't end well for either club(us and Swansea) Bruce is yesterday's man for me,his best times are over a decade ago now.

Mike Ashley doing things on the cheap again,it'll hopefully cost the Geordies big time.

Bruce has had a successful Managerial Career. Anyone who argues differently is talking out of their hat.
What has become apparent, however, is that it’s starting to wind down. He’s yesterday’s man. I thought he’d come good at Villa(looking at his track record in the Championship), but the off-pitch stuff seems to have caught him flat-footed. I think he’s now struggling to connect with this next generation of players. The Game’s moved on and he hasn’t.
He’s only got the Job at St James’ because of a unique set of circumstances; the main one being that he’s a Geordie ‘coming home’. If he’d have had exactly the same career but had been born in Bristol, he’d still be Sheff Weds’ Manager.

Bruce has been a decent manager. Albeit as above on the wane. He does have form for this too. Sure he’s done it more than once. Didn’t he do it going from Huddersfield to Wigan!? Not that you can blame him in this case.

I also think though he is losing connection with this generation. Most players won’t have been born when he was a (very good) premier league title winning captain. But it’s so long ago now it’s before even Keane was captaining United and his style for good or bad had gone. Not only that I don’t see how young players can take someone who is so clearly out of shape seriously as a top sporting manager. At least when you look at those managers who do inspire and motivate whether it’s Guardiola or Dyche. Klopp or Howe. They keep themselves on top of their own game. Must play a part

Just another reminder of the lack of integrity in the game from the guy who did the same to Palace, so has form. I doubt whether it is just 'an offer he could not refuse,' excuse. Ashley's businesses are in a downwards spiral, key people have 'left,' and he doesn't have the cash he used to have. Bruce is at the end of his career and does not need a bit more money. Its vanity.

Wednesday are a true sleeping giant and deserve better.

On the other hand Rafa out and Bruce in is great news for BFC. He won't outsmart SD and attract the foreign talent that Rafa could. There is a God and he doesn't like NUFC, or probably Wednesday.

If he doesn't make a success of it at Newcastle, he can always go back to writing crime-thriller novels, like he did in the late 90s.
