Re: The Open
Absolute imperious performance by Lowry. You can’t fail to see someone at total ease with a golf course.
It’s one thing having the experience of a course but it’s quite another to make it look so simple under that pressure. Very impressive.
It’s just a shame I haven’t backed him. He looked the real deal a few years ago but fell away for a while. Perhaps the Open in Ireland was just the job to bring out the potential.

Re: The Open
Lowry the matchstick man to catch, what a round.
Could still be plenty of twists and turns tomorrow, especially if the weather forecast is correct.
Lots of sub-par rounds today in the calm,i think Shane would snap your hand off for a 71 on Sunday, anything near par golf will likely see him holding the Claret Jug aloft tomorrow evening.

It’s difficult to describe Lowry’s performance today other than brilliant! Tee to green he was, for the most part, spot on. The golfers best friend……the putter………was working well! From the post round interview I saw, he appeared to have a hyper personality, that may work against him in the final round. I can only wish him good luck, I’d love to see him seal the deal.

Tough start for Lowry and Fleetwood, both dropping a shot so far.
Tommy has had big chances but his putting has let him down.

Re: The Open
Lowry 5 clear now after 5 holes he'd have certainly taken that when teeing-off,unless either or both of these collapse,i can't see the chasers having an impact.
Re: The Open
Could end up being a bit disappointing today. Think the lead will be too big with the way he's playing and the weather making it tough for the people chasing.
Re: The Open
Shows how difficult links golf is in comparison the the Masters in that players such as Bubba Watson have absolutely no chance of winning over here.

ATM you'd say that, but one bad tee shot and it could all change in a flash,Fleetwood has to apply more pressure though.jrgbfc wrote:Could end up being a bit disappointing today. Think the lead will be too big with the way he's playing and the weather making it tough for the people chasing.

Can I ask those who know a thing or two about golf, is it ever possible for players like Lowry to win tournaments such as the Masters, or do you need to be a massive hitter AND be good at course management to have any chance of winning all four majors?
Re: The Open
My god what a result. His life is changed forever.
Re: The Open
Jordan Spieth has a great record at Augusta and he isn't a massive hitter by any means. Obviously at some courses being a big hitter is a big help, but I think if you have a good all round game and you have a good 4 days you can win anywhere.Spijed wrote:Can I ask those who know a thing or two about golf, is it ever possible for players like Lowry to win tournaments such as the Masters, or do you need to be a massive hitter AND be good at course management to have any chance of winning all four majors?

Re: The Open
there are blokes who can hit the ball 430 yards plus who dont get a sniff in pro golf. Certain events favour longer hitters in general. Even on a course thats less than 7000 yards the big hitters are favoured as they may approach with a wedge instead of a 7 iron, however the big hitters like dj and koepka, woods etc all have something in common. Exquisite short games. Drives for show and putts for dough.

koepka should have been leader or joint leader after 54 holes this weekend but his putting was well off the mark.

Looking at his record (wikipedia) it does seem a player like Bubba Watson can neutralise a course like August because he is a long hitter but has been woeful at links golf.claretnproud wrote:there are blokes who can hit the ball 430 yards plus who dont get a sniff in pro golf. Re: The Open
As Koepka showed this week though you can hit it as far as you like but if you don't hole any putts you'll get nowhere. That's why it's such a frustrating game to play!Spijed wrote:Looking at his record (wikipedia) it does seem a player like Bubba Watson can neutralise a course like August because he is a long hitter but has been woeful at links golf.

Aren't the greens at Augusta meant to be quite difficult as well?jrgbfc wrote:As Koepka showed this week though you can hit it as far as you like but if you don't hole any putts you'll get nowhere. That's why it's such a frustrating game to play!

What a performance!!
Re: The Open
Yeah you need to be able to putt well to win at Augusta. I think that's why someone like Spieth has such a good record there. Lightening fast greens and lots of slopes/contours that aren't that obvious when watching on TV.Spijed wrote:Aren't the greens at Augusta meant to be quite difficult as well?

Re: The Open
Bubba has done well at Augusta where his distance helps but you certainly need to putt well. I think the issue at the Open is that you have to hit more low shots and need to better understand how to shape the ball around the contours of a links course. Then there’s the weather like today along with some of the Americans not giving themselves time to acclimatise. It’s interesting that a lot of the top finishers played a similar course over here the other week whereas others just turn up on a plane and try to master a links. I think Bubba is one of those...

Westwood's caddy was his girlfriend a fitness instructor who knows nothing about golf, think that might have been his downfall this week a good caddy is worth his weight in gold,he was playing well but had no advice.FactualFrank wrote:Earning a packet too. Re: The Open
Rory has won the Open...and tried to win the Masters after about 2 solid months of play in similar tournaments leading up to it without winning it... So as usual you miss the point. Rory is so naturally gifted on links courses he doesn’t need as much practice as the likes of Bubba who basically plays a links course once a year. Rory was shooting 61 at Portrush when he was 16.Steve1956 wrote:Which kinda proves my point you just cant turn up and expect to win HB.!

Tbf at this stage in his career Westwood was probably just playing for fun, rather than seriously thinking about winning.Steve1956 wrote:Westwood's caddy was his girlfriend a fitness instructor who knows nothing about golf, think that might have been his downfall this week a good caddy is worth his weight in gold,he was playing well but had no advice.

Re: The Open
Great to see Lowry make up for throwing a 4 shot 54 hole lead in the 2016 (?) US Open. Solid as a rock apart from a brief wobble. Most of the rest reverted to type, including Westie missing numerous short putts. A bit surprised by Fleetwood who was spraying it around a lot.

Re: The Open
Lowry a deserved winner,be interesting if he pushes on and claims more majors now,i can't be certain but i got the impression Fleetwood was going for broke, hence the double bogey on the 14th,he knew he had to chase birdies, and when you're taking risks, you're more likely to make mistakes,he did overshoot a couple of greens today, but he wasn't the only player, the conditions were tough.CrosspoolClarets wrote:Great to see Lowry make up for throwing a 4 shot 54 hole lead in the 2016 (?)
