The Open

Post by jrgbfc » Mon Jul 15, 2019 5:41 pm

Looking forward to this on Thursday, it's got a hell of a lot to live up to after yesterday's sporting action though! Will be interesting to see how they tackle Portrush, as I'm guessing a lot of the field will have never played it before. My bets for the week are;

£8 win on Jon Rahm at 14s
£3 ew on Kuchar at 35s
£2 ew on Matt Wallace at 60s
£1.50 ew on Eddie Peperell at 80s

I was at Castlerock not far from Portrush a couple of months ago - a lot of money has been spent on the area's infrastructure. It should be a hell of an occasion for all concerned.

Rory must fancy his chances he'll know the course well and links golf is his game,Tommy Fleetwood should feature strongly as well.

The Americans might find Portrush a culture shock, hope so they've dominated the majors for too long.

Think the young South African Brandon Stone is a good ew bet.Matt Wallace.Rory and Tommy Fleetwood all have a great chance.
Dont rule out Berndt Wiesberger last weeks winner either.

The course has been developed recently and they did change 3 or 4 holes.
Rory at the age of 16 recorded a round of 61 here !!

Still going through the players but I like all the picks on the OP.

Rory obvious choice but he’s not playing great at the moment and 8/1 is very short in golf.
Tiger has done no preparation at all for this - he’s not played a tournament for weeks. Personally i’d leave him at again short odds. Compare his preparation to Koepka who arrived last week and has employed a caddy who knows this course better than anyone.

Louis Oost at 55s is playing well and suited by our courses.
Shane Lowry at 66s has a great short game which will be a big factor this week - plus he’ll want to do well in his home country. Same with McDowell who is in good form and knows the course inside out.

Of the Americans Cantlay and Schaufelle are both great players who have a fantastic record in recent majors. I think both will go well.

Fitzpatrick will be suited by the conditions. He’s got the game to win a major but will depend on how he is putting - he putted well a couple of weeks ago when he lost to Pavan in a play off.

Tommy F got a big chance - still available at 30s

Need to narrow these down to 3 or 4 players and also look at a couple of big outsiders to try and get in top 10 - you usually get one at least.

I was reading somewhere earlier that Woods has barely swung a club since the US Open last month. Add in the fact that he seems to need warm temperatures to loosen his back up a bit I wouldn't go near him this week.

I'm a bit frustrated that I could have got 50s on Kuchar only a few days ago but left it a bit too late. He's having a great season and has a decent record in the Open.

I’d love for my local guy Fitzpatrick to win (went to the school 500 yards from my house and is a member at the local golf club). Portrush will reward the straight hitter, and the greens will be unusually receptive if you can get backspin (it always rains there so rock hard greens are a rarity and the course has developed to punish long wayward hitting).

Looking like they're expecting some heavy showers at Portrush over the next few days. If the wind gets up as well will make it really interesting. Have to think it will favour the Europeans a bit in that case, or at least the one's who play most of their golf in Europe.

Possibly - but there are a number of yanks who have great all round games and are brilliant in the wind. Plenty of them do well over hear and love links golf.
Then there’s a few like Bubba who will just be counting down the hours till they can fly home on Friday night !!

Considering most top European golfers now play on PGA Tour full time, gone are the days when European players had the advantage in less than pristine playing conditions. Royal Portrush is an unknown quantity compared to the other courses on The Open rota, although testing conditions soon sort out those who can plod along without messing up. If the weather turns nasty as expected, I’m going for Justin Rose to win his second major, a solid, all round player.

+1 from a Canadian point of view. For many years we’ve had all day coverage of all 4 rounds on our sports channels. This year, no coverage on Thurs/Friday, all day coverage on Sat/Sun though. I guess contracts expired……………..pi**es me off!

I think for the Open it is important to consider players that have shown form at previous Opens as the main factor. This for me suggests that the likes of Jon Rahm is far too short given his previous record. Not to say he can’t do well, more he is poorly priced by the bookies.

Good value are the likes of Zach Johnson, Henrik Stenson, Webb Simpson and even Woods and Molinari are fairly priced. There are some interesting outsiders at big odds such as Van Rooyen, Thomas Pieters and even Sunghoon Kang (400/1) who was 7th at the PGA, has won this year and finished the Open in 2017 in the top 50. That’s where my each way money will be going.

I agree that there could be a few big outsiders certainly getting a place this week, but I wouldn't go near Woods. It sounds like he's barely played for a month and he needs warm weather to loosen his back up a bit, so I don't think the cold and wet in Northern Ireland will do him any favours.

Agree with Woods from a health perspective. However, he was very good last year and when he has won previous Opens he has shown brilliant patience and iron control. Something that he could teach most of the field.

McIlroy can no longer put 4 rounds together. Also misses far too many short putts. As said he’s going backwards and screw the rankings.

There is some utter tosh posted on here at times.

The world rankings are based on the last 2 years play. McIlroy was world ranked 7 one year ago and is currently world ranked 3. He has won 2 tournaments in 2019 with 2 top tens in the other majors. I really wish I was going backwards like that. The game has never been more competitive than it currently is as well.

Well said. As usual you post total bs. You probably think Tommy Fleetwood is the best player ever and yet he has never been ranked higher than 9 and is just 2 years younger than Rory.

It is fair to say Rory is not at his best today but he is most definitely the best British golfer of the last 10 years.
