Do Ladbrokes still sponsor us at all? I remember they used to have some good banter about us on their social media page which always went down well

I can't disagree with you mate, I am possibly the last person you would ever meet who wants things banned, it's against everything I stand for, I was just considering the idea that although something isn't illegal (and gambling should never be made illegal) it maybe shouldn't be promoted in such a way. In a way as well it's double standards because at matches there are loads of kids seeing this promotion but apparently they don't allow the sponsors name on kids kits. It just seems all so odd.Spike wrote:Not a problem until it is banned we are not doing anything illegal or in mind immoral

could be worse
Re: A lot of people aren’t fans of the new sponsors ...
It seems the figures are from SportingIntelligence which means that although they won't be 100% accurate they at least won't be entirely made up.
It seems our shirt sponsorship deal last season was boosted by our appearance in the Europa League and I guess we must have managed to use that as the baseline for this season.

Crosspool makes a very compelling argument and I tend to agree in principle with his observations.CrosspoolClarets wrote:Shutting our eyes and enjoying listening to the jingling of coins coming in from the Far East is something this country has got far too used to in recent years, whether it be funding coming in from dodgy governments with strings attached or in this case gambling money coming from organisations who get it from customers, many of whom will obviously be addicts (hence why I see it as morally bankrupt).
As regards BFC we now liberally sprinkle gambling encouragement over Twitter on official feeds (e.g. our other main sponsor), with no way of hiding it (even from kids) if they want to still see breaking news. Where will it end? It ruins lives, but it’s OK because we might finish a spot or two higher up the table with that extra few million.
So no, I see what the OP is writing about, but I see it as the thin end of a very long wedge.
However, looking in detail at the figures on the Magic Money Tree thread it's not difficult to understand the dilemma that our BoD have when deciding which way to go. In percentage terms our sponsorship figure to Total Income has grown massively since we last entered the PL and perhaps it's understandable that the Board have chosen to be labelled as 'morally bankrupt' whilst at the same time taking the financial decision that appears to be in the best interests of the Club.

Do you think it's actually a dilemma for the directors? I get the impression that they're pretty happy to keep on signing bumper sponsorship deals like this and aren't particularly worried about how it looks.Royboyclaret wrote:However, looking in detail at the figures on the Magic Money Tree thread it's not difficult to understand the dilemma that our BoD have when deciding which way to go.

Of course we don't know the answer to that question, JohnMcGreal, and any opinion is going to be very subjective. Nevertheless, the figures are crystal clear and with a similar Turnover next season compared to last we will see a 6% sponsorship figure to Total Income. That compares to just 1% when we came into the PL in 2014/15.JohnMcGreal wrote:Do you think it's actually a dilemma for the directors? Absolutely. The amount of money involved is significant, which is why I can't see any club turning it down voluntarily. The only way it will change is if sponsorship by gambling companies is banned.Royboyclaret wrote:Of course we don't know the answer to that question, JohnMcGreal, and any opinion is going to be very subjective. Doubt it’s a dilemma at all. I don’t think our directors are, in general, aware or concerned with the opinions of supporters.JohnMcGreal wrote:Do you think it's actually a dilemma for the directors? Buy the shirt, take it to a screen printers and get a picture of Betty Turpin holding up one of her famous hot pots, winner.

re gambling sponsorship - I have put a number of pieces on the Magic Money Tree thread over time and a few powerful ones recently - this thread from a Wolves fan is perhaps the most resonant I have seen piece I have seen on the subject so far - so will add it here as well

I suspect shirt designs now take into account the sponsors logo.tarkys_ears wrote:

Whilst it might seem good that fans object to betting companies sponsoring shirts in football it also shows how much hypocrisy there is when there are few complaints over abhorrent owners running clubs, especially if it brings success, Man City being a prime example.Chester Perry wrote:re gambling sponsorship - I have put a number of pieces on the Magic Money Tree thread over time and a few powerful ones recently - this thread from a Wolves fan is perhaps the most resonant I have seen piece I have seen on the subject so far - so will add it here as well

Agree - there is a lot of that particular kind of blindness - posted a number of times about it in the Money Tree Thread - absolute reflection of our "not my problem" societySpijed wrote:Whilst it might seem good that fans object to betting companies sponsoring shirts in football it also shows how much hypocrisy there is when there are few complaints over abhorrent owners running clubs, especially if it brings success, Man City being a prime example.

Not true. Only online betting is banned in China and it's not enforced further than censorship of the websites.Chester Perry wrote:Betting is also banned in China - the companies are based offshore and the gambling is online to get around the ban
Gambling is 100% illegal in Thailand, they're even beginning to enforce a ban on stuffed toy claw machines.
The sponsor is Philipino, not Thai anyway.

Good sponsorship deal that.
Can’t understand the view that directors don’t listen to the views of fans. I suspect they would struggle to satisfy a few anti gambling views, a few pro gambling views and a majority of shrugged shoulders. For those quoting numbers of gambling addicts, you can read independently audited numbers of problem gamblers and those at risk in the UK Gambling Commission annual report.

How true are those figures quoted.
Only reason I ask is Leicester are sponsored by the owners, and in a bid to circumvent FFP, you'd expect them to pay a lot more than that.

Re: A lot of people aren’t fans of the new sponsors ...
I suspect Leicester's deal is linked with Stadium sponsorship and is a long term one - they could probably earn more elsewhere but the owners may not want to lose that "real estate" (btw they have been chucking plenty in in the background - the circa £80 - 100m spent on the training ground being a case in point - it is pretty special)
